A documentary on the life and tumultuous times of Queen Cleopatra is on the horizon for Netflix with the planned docuseries veering from accepted historical wisdom by changing the subject’s ethnicity. 

The documentary appears to propose the case Cleopatra was a black woman with several of the commentators featured in the film arguing Cleopatra could potentially be of African descent instead of Greek.

Queen Cleopatra, produced by Jada Pinkett Smith, details her life as a “warrior” and a ruler of “unparalleled power,” according to the trailer:

“It’s possible that she was an Egyptian,” one commentator in the documentary said.

“I imagine her to have curly hair like me and a similar skin color,” another concurred.

 “I remember my grandmother saying to me, ‘I don’t care what they tell you in school, Cleopatra was black,’” yet another commentator added.

The Daily Caller has documented dissenting voices that question the proposition Queen Cleopatra had African descent.

“Cleopatra VII was white—of Macedonian descent, as were all of the Ptolemy rulers, who lived in Egypt,” Kathryn Bard, professor of archaeology and classical studies at Boston University, said as Newsweek reported, according to the outlet.

“We know who her father was,” Gerald Kadish, teaching professor emeritus of history and Near Eastern studies at Binghamton University is also quoted as saying.

“He was certainly not Black. None of her siblings [were] anything but Greco-Macedonian.”

Kadish, however, acknowledged potential debate over her mother’s origins.

In several cases, authorities asked villagers familiar with the local terrain to help locate migrants who managed to slip through holes cut in a border fence or to cross the River Evros — Meric in Turkish — that demarcates most of the 212-kilometer (132-mile) border.

“We were born here, we live here, we work here, we know the crossings better than anyone,” Panayiotis Ageladarakis, a community leader in Amorio, a village that lies some 300 meters (yards) from the river banks.

Other villages also responded to the call for volunteer trackers. Small groups of unarmed men monitor known crossing points after dark.

"We sit at the crossings, and they come," Ageladarakis told The Associated Press as he drove a pickup truck with a fellow Greek border village resident along a rough track at night. "We keep them there most of the time, call police and they come and arrest them. Then, it's a matter for the police. We aren't interested in where they take them. We just try to help this effort taking place by the army and the police.”

“There's nobody coming from a war,” he said. “None of them are refugees. They're all illegal migrants and that's why they're trying to get into Europe (this way).”

Greek authorities said that out of a the 252 people arrested for illegal entry over the past week as of Friday, 64% were Afghans, 19% Pakistanis, 5% Turks and 4% Syrians, while the others were from Iraq, Iran, Morocco, Ethiopia, Bangladesh and Egypt.

(Infowars Europe)  -  Residents of the Greek island Lesvos occupied a key government building during protests organized in response to a violent march by thousands of migrants currently occupying the island, according to reports.

Over 300 locals entered the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the Aegean & Islands Policy in the capital village of Mytilini, chanting, “We want our village back,” and demanding increased police patrols to mitigate migrant crime.

Hours earlier, some 2,000 migrants had embarked on a protest march that spiraled into chaos.




“Police fired teargas and sound flares against the men, women and children protesters,” Keep Talking Greece reports. “On their part, the asylum seekers set farm land on fire, and later in an area near the Kara Tepe accommodation center and a Public Power Company plant.”

Despite police efforts to block the combative mob from reaching Mytilini, many succeeded and proceeded to block main roads and erect tents and stage obstructive demonstrations.

Giannis Mastrogiannis, a local official, has accused non-governmental organizations (NGOs) of organizing the protests in response to Athens’ plans to building permanent asylum centers on the island and also erect a ‘floating barrier’ to prevent illegal boats traveling from Turkish shores.

“We had a general disruption, we also had a fire in an abandoned warehouse. My fellow citizens are furious and have now reached their limits,” Mastrogiannis told local media.

There are over 20,000 migrants currently living on Lesvos, where the largest asylum facility was designed to accommodate just 3,000.

Locals are desperate to regain control of their island, while migrants are demanding to be brought to the mainland and for their ‘asylum’ claims to be processed quickly.

(Infowars Europe)  -  Greece has announced plans to tighten its borders and build new detention centers in an effort to mitigate an overwhelming influx of migrants that shows no signs of slowing.

Some 37,000 migrants are estimated to be living in 'camps' on five Greek islands and hundreds more are arriving on a near-daily basis.

The notorious Moria camp on Lesbos, designed for up 3,000 people, is currently packed with over 15,000 migrants, according to reports, and other camps are similarly overflowing.

The camps will soon be closed and new asylum facilities, each capable of accommodating up to 7,000 people, will be built on Lesbos, Chios and Samos, while smaller, remodeled facilities will be installed on Kos and Leros, AFP reports.

"Instead of being allowed to move freely in and out of the camps, asylum-seekers will now be locked up until they are granted refugee status and relocated to the mainland, or they are rejected and sent back to Turkey," officials said.

Additionally, 1,200 new border guards will be hired and deployed to the islands and the land border with Turkey, with a mission to render "migrant entry points air-tight."

"Decongesting the islands is a priority at this stage," said Alkiviadis Stefanis, Greece's deputy defense minister and special coordinator for migration.

"These actions are designed to show our determination in dealing with the migrant-refugee crisis."

Stefanis says 20,000 migrants will be relocated to the mainland by early 2020, with 15,000 living in camps and 5,000 in hotels.

(Gatestone Institute)  -  An assault on members of the Hellenic Coast Guard during a drug raid in Athens on April 4 highlights a growing problem in Greece. Some opponents of the far-left Syriza-led government attribute the increasing drug traffic in the country to a dangerous alliance between political anarchists and illegal immigrants. The anarchists might be considered the Greek equivalent of the "far left". According to Reuters:

"Many self-proclaimed anarchists - the word stems from the Greek 'anarchia' or absence of authority - say they are pacifist, but certain groups have few qualms about using violence. Six years of recession have fuelled a new wave of left-wing militancy, according to officials, anarchists and court testimony."

The April 4 incident was sparked when Greek authorities arrested a Syrian national on a ferry at the Piraeus Port; he was carrying 200 grams of marijuana, which he said he had purchased from an Egyptian drug dealer in the Exarchia neighborhood of Athens.

Eight members of the Coast Guard and a prosecutor immediately went to Exarchia to raid the supplier's apartment, located in one of 50 buildings in the neighborhood that are occupied by illegal-immigrant squatters. When the officers and prosecutor arrived at the building, they arrested two female suspects, a Greek-Australian and a Syrian national, and confiscated 1.5 kilograms of cannabis and a Glock pistol.

On their way out of the building, the officers were ambushed by a masked mob, wearing helmets and bulletproof vests, and armed with knives, clubs and assault rifles. Two Coast Guard officers were stabbed in the attack, and their weapons taken.

According to the authorities, the building in which the incident took place is near a weapons cache possibly connected to the "militias" of Exarchia -- a neighborhood infamous for previous violent attacks on police. As the Chairman of the Union of Police Officers, Dimosthenis Pakos, said in an interview after the assault, "You don't go for a walk in Exarchia [without being accompanied by] an army."

In an interview with SKAI TV, Stavros Balaskas, vice president of the Greek Federation of Police Officers, agreed, referring to Exarchia as "a state within a state":

"[T]he neighborhood has a structure inside. There are platoons, companies, battalions, Kalashnikovs. I don't know any more if we, as a police force, have the political mandate to clear the area. This region is a matter for the army now."

Michalis Chrysochoidis, a former Minister for Citizen Protection who was responsible for the 2002 dismantling of the "November 17" domestic terrorist organization, told SKAI TV this month:

"...[T]here are now too many illegal immigrants in Exarchia who are drug traffickers [and] gun traffickers... they have essentially taken over the whole place... [I]f there is no immediate operational and judiciary reaction to this phenomenon, the problems will... multiply for society."

On April 11, in what appeared to be a public relations operation aimed at restoring a modicum of dignity to the security forces that had been attacked a week earlier, heavily armed police units raided two buildings in Exarchia in search of drugs and weapons. During the raid, three people were arrested for drug possession, and 90 others were brought in for questioning. Most of them turned out to be illegal or unregistered immigrants.

As of 2017, there were an estimated 3,000 undocumented immigrants living in Athens in privately-owned buildings that are illegally occupied by Greek anarchists.

(Infowars)  -  Dozens were arrested in Lesbos, Greece, for erecting a large Christian metal cross reportedly meant to deter migrants from entering the region.

Thirty-five Greek citizens and one Albanian used two crane trucks early Sunday morning to place the cross near a major route that migrants use to enter Europe, the majority of which who are Muslim.

“…If they tear it (the cross), we’ll raise it again,” said a local. “They have to understand this is our land, this is our religion, and this is our symbol.”

The group was accused of “arbitrary occupation of public property” and illegally building on a site that is protected by archeological law.

They are scheduled to be brought to a local Prosecutor’s Office and the trucks used were seized and later returned to their owners.

Interestingly, the same rocky cliff is where an “intercultural coexistence” group tore down another cross last October because it was “offensive to migrants” passing through.

• Greece's ruling Syriza coalition appears to be adopting a strategy of garnering votes from immigrants by expediting their naturalization process. It will be easier to obtain Greek citizenship than a fishing license.
• A total of 800,000 immigrants -- almost one-tenth of the native Greek population -- will soon become citizens. Transposed to the United States, that would be the equivalent of 32,000,000 new voters.

(Gatestone Institute)  -  As Greece struggles with accelerating economic decline and an increasing lack of public faith in the political leadership, the ruling Syriza coalition appears to be adopting a strategy of garnering votes from immigrants by expediting their naturalization process.

According to a recent report in the Greek daily Parapolitika, Interior Minister Panos Skourletis is laying the groundwork to enable hundreds of thousands of immigrants to become citizens and vote in the next elections. Although the mandate of Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras ends in September 2019, some analysts have been predicting a call for elections by the end of 2018.

Until now, candidates for Greek citizenship had to be vetted by a committee. Under the new system, applicants will be granted citizenship automatically if they correctly answer 20 out of 30 questions online. In addition, the government is planning to allow immigrants over the age of 65 to obtain Greek IDs, without testing their knowledge of the Greek language. In other words, it will be easier to obtain Greek citizenship than a Greek fishing license. 

As a result, a total of 800,000 immigrants -- almost one-tenth of the native Greek population -- will soon become citizens. Transposed to the United States, that would be the equivalent of 32,000,000 new voters.

Easing citizenship requirements may be a calculated electoral ploy, but it is also in keeping with an overall European multiculturalism. The current leadership is not interested in the origins of the country's illegal immigrants, many of whom hail from Afghanistan, Pakistan and sub-Saharan Africa and do not respect the Judeo-Christian roots and culture of modern Greek civilization. 

Nor does the government appear to concern itself with the danger involved in allowing huge numbers of migrants from terrorist-ridden Muslim-majority countries to become citizens, without vetting them.

Meanwhile, as its immigrant population increases, Greece is simultaneously undergoing a brain-drain. Over the past 8 years, for example, 500,000 skilled and educated young people left the country and have chosen to remain abroad rather than return home and contribute to the economy, the culture and society in general.

(Greek Reporter)  -  While visiting Athens on Thursday, European Commissioner for Migration Dimitris Avramopoulos said that there are approximately 3 million refugees waiting to cross into Greece from Turkey in an effort to reach Western and Northern Europe.

Th news comes at a time when repeated threats from Turkish President  Recep Tayyip Erdogan along with many of his advisors and aides imply that the Brussels-Ankara deal might come to an end.

Mr. Avramopoulos stated that the deal signed last year between Turkey and the EU had reduced the influx of migrants toward Europe and reduced the number of deaths at sea while stressing the need to safeguard the deal in order to curb human smuggling in the Aegean.

Thousand of migrants are already bottlenecked in reception centers on the islands of the eastern Aegean, which is the first point of arrival for most migrants arriving in Greece from Turkey.

(RT News)  -  Greek lawmakers have given the go-ahead for the first official mosque to be built in Athens in over 180 years. The state-funded project has faced opposition from right-wing party Independent Greeks and the ultranationalist Golden Dawn.

The vote was passed by a landslide, with 206 members of the Greek parliament voting to accelerate the construction on the mosque and 24 objecting out of the 230 MPs present.

The far-right Golden Dawn and right-wing Independent Greeks (ANEL) were the only political parties to vote against the construction of the mosque, according to the AMNA news agency.

More than 200,000 Muslims are believed to be living in Athens, but they have had to make do with informal mosques around the capital, which have often been targeted by far-right groups.

The Orthodox Church, which plays a powerful institutional and cultural role in Greece, has also opposed its construction.

Education Minister Filis added that building an official mosque could help stop the radicalization of local Muslims. Around 50,000 mainly Muslim refugees are believed to be in Greece as a result of the migrant crisis that has swept Europe, which was triggered by wars in the Middle East.

“If we wish to avoid the problems facing France and Belgium, we should not make the mistakes that they are now trying to deal with,” he said.

The mosque will be built in the west of the capital in the Votanikos area of the city, on an piece of land that used to belong to the Hellenic Navy. Rights groups such as Amnesty International had previously criticized Athens for being one of the few European capital cities that did not have an official mosque for its Muslims to pray at.

An official mosque has not been built in Greece since it won independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1832.

(London Telegraph)  -  Greece has condemned the use of force against migrants as "dangerous and deplorable" after Macedonian  police fired tear gas and rubber bullets to deter hundreds of refugees from crossing the Greek side of the border.

The police fired tear gas, stun grenades, rubber bullets and a water cannon at around 500 migrants, including children, injuring more than 250, as they tried to scale a border fence at Idomeni in northern Greece in the latest violence to erupt in Europe's migrant crisis.

"The indiscriminate use of chemicals, rubber bullets and stun grenades against vulnerable populations, and particularly without reasons for such force, is a dangerous and deplorable act," George Kyritsis, a spokesman for migration coordination in the Greek government, said in an unusually strong statement.

Macedonian sources initially denied police took action but later said Macedonian police only fired tear gas after migrants stormed the border fence on Sunday.

Clashes continued into the afternoon at the makeshift camp which houses over 11,000 stranded migrants.

(London Telegraph)  -  Greece has delivered a stark warning on the eve of an emergency summit over the migration crisis, declaring that it cannot stop tens of thousands of people from crossing its northern border and travelling onwards in Europe.

Nikolaos Toskas, the Greek minister for public order, told The Telegraph that Europe was deluding itself by believing that refugees could be bottled up in his country.

The European Union will convene an emergency summit with Turkey on Monday amid signs that a deal is close. Under this proposed agreement, Turkey would take back all economic migrants presently in Greece – generally defined as all non-Syrians - in return for the EU accepting refugees directly from its camps.

The aim is to stem the flow across the Aegean, where about 1,000 people are landing every day on the Greek island of Lesbos alone. Lesbos has only 85,000 inhabitants, meaning that the inflow into the island amounts to 1.2 per cent of its resident population every 24 hours.

More than 125,000 migrants have arrived in Greece so far this year – 12 times more than during the same period in 2015.
