A California city is moving to enact a permanent ban on new drive-thru restaurants, spurred on by a group of vocal locals who have organized to oppose a potential new In-N-Out location.

While many other cities (and states) openly court the privately owned, Southern California-founded burger chain in hopes of attracting its business, Culver City isn't swayed by the scent of animal-style fries and mustard-grilled Double-Doubles. 

The stand-alone city within Los Angeles County voted on Monday to extend a recently enacted 45-day moratorium on any new drive-thrus for another 10.5 months, giving city officials a long enough runway to draft permanent legislation that will keep drive-thrus out of the city for good.

The call to change Culver City's drive-thru laws started when a group of area residents banded together to oppose a potential new In-N-Out location at the Studio Village Shopping Center at the corner of Sepulveda Boulevard and Sawtelle Boulevard. The burger chain has been holding community meetings about the proposed site since early February, showing renderings for a familiar red-and-white, nearly 4,000-square-foot restaurant with a 61-space parking lot and a drive-thru capable of holding 26 cars at a time. Locals showed up to that February meeting in droves, offering mostly disapproval at the notion of a busy drive-thru in their part of town.

The mayor of San Francisco signed an ordinance that creates a "Reparations Fund" that could one day grant each of the city's eligible Black residents up to $5 million in reparations for alleged historic discrimination and displacement.

The ordinance, which was passed by the Board of Supervisors earlier this month, was signed by Democrat Mayor Daniel Lurie two days before Christmas. It establishes the legal framework for the fund but does not allocate funds or guarantee payments. The fund can be financed with private donations, foundations and other non-city sources.

It proposed that the city "[p]rovide a one-time, lump sum payment of $5 million to each eligible person."

California under Governor Gavin Newsom may have staged its own economic demise (the final nail in the coffin) after laws were passed requiring even greater state interference into oil refineries and gas stations.

 . . . companies are shutting down refinery operations in the state.

Lawmakers in California at both the state and federal levels are warning that refinery closures could push prices higher while leaving the state more dependent on foreign oil.  At the center of the warning is the planned shutdown of two major refineries: Valero’s Benicia facility and Phillips 66’s Los Angeles plant. Together, the closures would eliminate nearly 20% of California’s in-state refining capacity.

Experts suggest prices could go as high as $10 - $12 per gallon as a result of the supply squeeze, spreading outside of CA to Arizona and Nevada. Republican lawmakers say that the loss of in-state production threatens not only consumer prices at the pump but also the state’s military readiness; a matter of national security. 

The refineries make jet fuel and diesel and gasoline for military bases across California.  California is home to more than 30 military bases, many of which rely on fuel refined in-state.  Gavin Newsom has mostly dismissed concerns as exaggeration, asserting that foreign shipments of fuel will fill the supply gap.  

Blue states like CA have been increasingly subjecting their citizens to an experiment in artificial energy scarcity; reducing access to “fossil fuels” while raising taxes to force consumers into the electric car market.  

All of this is being down in the name of stopping “man-made global warming”, a problem which does not exist.  Newsom claims that he is trying to help CA citizens by lowering gas prices, but all of his actions are leading to a price explosion.

Two large California oil refineries are shutting down, triggering mounting concerns from state legislators, industry groups and many others.

Assemblymember Mike A. Gipson of the Gardena district bluntly described his concern during a recent Sacramento hearing.

“This is a tremendous loss,” Gipson told NBC Los Angeles, referring to the looming closure of the Phillips 66 plant near L.A. "The jobs that it holds, the individuals… working each and every day, those individuals live in my district, they shop in my district, they add to the economy in my district."

The Phillips 66 and Valero’s Benicia sites are set to close in 2026. Together, the shutdowns will eliminate nearly 300,000 barrels-per‑day of refining capacity — roughly 20% of the total used in the state.

Valero attributed its decision to “years of regulatory pressure (and) significant fines for air quality violations,” including an $82 million penalty levied in 2024. Phillips 66 similarly cited business challenges stemming from California’s strict environmental regulations.

"They have said that they cannot do business in the state of California," Gipson reiterated. “The regulatory agencies have imposed on the refiners of California very stringent regulation that makes it very difficult for them to remain in the state of California.”

The way Gipson sees it, the state should do everything it can to ensure that its remaining refineries stay in California.

At the City Club Chicago event, Gates bashed President Donald Trump for lessening the power of teachers’ unions, calling his education agenda a “relitigation” of the Civil War while complaining about the failing state of Chicago schools.

Quoting civil rights activist James Baldwin, Gates tells the crowd, “The children are always ours. Every single one of them, all over the globe.” Gates then mocks parents who would respond by saying “CTU thinks your children are its children.”

“Yes, we do,” Gates said. “We do.”

CTU did not respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.

Visitors to Hawaii will now be charged a “climate-change tax,” in a US first.

On Tuesday, Hawaii’s Democrat governor Josh Green signed into law a “green fee” for visitors, which will be used to offset their carbon footprint for visiting the islands. It will consist of a 0.75% tax on visitors staying at hotels and rental properties, and cruise-ship passengers will also have to pay a prorated tax for the number of days their ship is in port on the islands.

The new law will take effect in January of next year.

Hawaii has consistently gone further than other US states in imposing restrictions on carbon emissions, whether as a voluntary measure from government or in response to legal action from citizens.

Last year, Hawaii’s Department of Transport (DoT) reached a settlement with 13 teenagers who alleged it was violating the state constitution by operating a transportation system that harms the environment and infringes their right to a pollution-free environment.

Under the settlement, the Hawaii DoT will adopt a plan to hit net-zero emissions by 2045 for ground, air and marine transportation. Emissions targets are set for five-year intervals.

The DoT has promised to take “any actions necessary” to meet the emissions targets, including creating a volunteer youth council to advise the department and the establishment of a special unit under the direction of a “Climate Change Mitigation and Culture Manager.”

0% interest home loans for illegals

(Daily Mail)  Californians are reacting angrily to revelations that migrants who entered the US illegally could soon benefit from a taxpayer-funded state scheme to help hard-up residents buy homes.

Democrats on the California Senate Appropriations Committee have approved a bill to move forward that would open up the California Dream For All Shared Appreciation Loan program to non-legal migrants.

The scheme was launched last year and has already provided thousands of first-time homebuyers with loans of up to 20 percent of a house's purchase price for down payment or closing cost.

San Diego County Supervisor Jim Desmond said the bill was a waste of taxpayers' money.

'Once again, California has chosen to prioritize illegal immigration and fiscal irresponsibility over the needs of its citizens,' Desmond posted on X.

'Expanding this program to include illegal immigrants is not just another handout — it's a massive overreach that shifts the financial burden onto law-abiding taxpayers.'

Assemblymember Joaquin Arambula, a Fresno Democrat, in January introduced his bill to expand the scheme's eligibility to undocumented migrants.

The amendment alters the program by stating that applicants 'shall not be disqualified by the agency solely based on the applicant's immigration status.'

In California, that amounts to 1.85 million migrants without legal papers, according to Pew Research Center estimates.
