The California Legislature passed a measure Wednesday that will require large corporations that do business in the state to disclose their past ties to slavery.

It now heads to Gov. Gavin Newsom.

Assembly Bill 2599 would force companies that have more than $100 million in sales annually across the world to search through their records for evidence that they, their predecessors or subsidiaries previously bought or sold enslaved people or provided financial support for those transactions, such as through insurance or loans. It was seen by some reparations advocates as a significant step, but others questioned that it was.

$5 Million in Slavery Reparations Per Black

The mayor of San Francisco signed an ordinance that creates a "Reparations Fund" that could one day grant each of the city's eligible Black residents up to $5 million in reparations for alleged historic discrimination and displacement.

The ordinance, which was passed by the Board of Supervisors earlier this month, was signed by Democrat Mayor Daniel Lurie two days before Christmas. It establishes the legal framework for the fund but does not allocate funds or guarantee payments. The fund can be financed with private donations, foundations and other non-city sources.

It proposed that the city "[p]rovide a one-time, lump sum payment of $5 million to each eligible person."

At the City Club Chicago event, Gates bashed President Donald Trump for lessening the power of teachers’ unions, calling his education agenda a “relitigation” of the Civil War while complaining about the failing state of Chicago schools.

Quoting civil rights activist James Baldwin, Gates tells the crowd, “The children are always ours. Every single one of them, all over the globe.” Gates then mocks parents who would respond by saying “CTU thinks your children are its children.”

The California state Senate passed three reparations bills on Tuesday, advancing a broader legislative effort to provide restitution to descendants of slaves. 

The bills passed this week are part of more than a dozen reparations bills proposed by the California Legislative Black Caucus earlier this year, ABC7 reported. The bills "issue an apology to Black Californians for the state's role in instituting slave laws and discriminatory practices since its founding," the outlet wrote. The bills will now head to the California State Assembly for votes. 

California introduced a package of reparations bills in January that would give property compensation and cash payouts to the descendants of slaves and other Black Californians. The assembly voted down previous bills on the issue, including one which would have provided homeownership aid and another which would have offered property tax relief for descendants of slaves, according to ABC7.

Using this exploitative labor system and coal power plants, China’s share of global polysilicon production surged from 26% in 2010 to 82% in 2020, while America’s share declined from 35% to 5% over the same period.

Today, China uses slave labor to manufacture 79% of polysilicon, 97% of wafers, 75% of modules, and 85% of solar cells.

Three Disney workers arrested in human trafficking

(Daily Mail)  A Sheriff's Office in Florida have arrested more than 200 people including a teacher and three Disney employees during a weeklong human trafficking operation.

Officials in Polk County said they had successfully arrested 219 people during the sting, named 'Traffic Stop 2'.

Sheriff Grady Judd announced the results of the operation at a press conference, saying that 83 suspects were arrested for soliciting a prostitute.

35 of those arrested are suspected to have been in the country illegally and came from counties including Cuba, Chile, Venezuela, Mexico, Guatemala, Colombia or the Bahamas.

41 suspects also told detectives they were married, 13 said they received government assistance and 42 brought illegal drugs to the location.

In total, detectives charged 44 felonies and 242 misdemeanors during the investigation.

California was never a slave state, but the San Francisco “Reparations Committee” is proposing to pay each longtime black resident $5 million and grant them total debt forgiveness for suffering decades of “systemic repression.”

“While neither San Francisco, nor California, formally adopted the institution of chattel slavery, the tenets of segregation, white supremacy and systematic repression and exclusion of Black people were codified through legal and extralegal actions, social codes, and judicial enforcement,” the proposed draft says.

“A lump sum payment would compensate the affected population for the decades of harms that they have experienced, and will redress the economic and opportunity losses that Black San Franciscans have endured, collectively, as the result of both intentional decisions and unintended harms perpetuated by City policy,” the draft says.

The committee is also proposing the debt forgiveness plan because “Black households are more likely to hold costlier, riskier debt, and are more likely to have outstanding student loan debt.”

The reparations committee is also planning to supplement lower-income blacks so they can afford housing.

“Racial disparities across all metrics have led to a significant racial wealth gap in the City of San Francisco,” the draft says. “By elevating income to match AMI, Black people can better afford housing and achieve a better quality of life.”

San Francisco Council President Shamann Walton says the millions of dollars in reparations, debt forgiveness and supplemental income is not enough.

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors met on Tuesday to review the committee’s plans to pay reparations to black residents.

“An estimated 50,000 Black people live in San Francisco, but it’s unclear who among them would be eligible for reparations. Under the committee’s draft reparations plan, a person must be at least 18 years old and identified as “Black/African American” in public documents for at least 10 years. Eligible people must also meet two of eight other criteria, such as living in San Francisco during a certain time period or descending from someone incarcerated for the police war on drugs.” Fox News reported.

(National File)  U.S. Virgin Islands Attorney General Denise George was terminated on Saturday by Governor Albert Bryan after she filed a lawsuit against JPMorgan on Tuesday which asserted several counts of facilitation of human trafficking in Jeffrey Epstein’s sex trafficking network.

Gov. Bryan made a statement about the development on Monday. “I relieved Denise George of her duties as attorney general this weekend,” Gov. Bryan said. “I thank her for her service to the people of the territory during the past four years as attorney general and wish her the best in her future endeavors.”

“I am not at liberty to discuss details on personnel matters,” Gov. Bryan added.

“The investigation revealed that JP Morgan knowingly, negligently, and unlawfully provided and pulled the levers through which recruiters and victims were paid and was indispensable to the operation and concealment of the Epstein trafficking enterprise,” the lawsuit stated.

“JP Morgan turned a blind eye to evidence of human trafficking over more than a decade because of Epstein’s own financial footprint, and because of the deals and clients that Epstein brought and promised to the bank,” the lawsuit said.
