A documentary on the life and tumultuous times of Queen Cleopatra is on the horizon for Netflix with the planned docuseries veering from accepted historical wisdom by changing the subject’s ethnicity. 

The documentary appears to propose the case Cleopatra was a black woman with several of the commentators featured in the film arguing Cleopatra could potentially be of African descent instead of Greek.

Queen Cleopatra, produced by Jada Pinkett Smith, details her life as a “warrior” and a ruler of “unparalleled power,” according to the trailer:

“It’s possible that she was an Egyptian,” one commentator in the documentary said.

“I imagine her to have curly hair like me and a similar skin color,” another concurred.

 “I remember my grandmother saying to me, ‘I don’t care what they tell you in school, Cleopatra was black,’” yet another commentator added.

The Daily Caller has documented dissenting voices that question the proposition Queen Cleopatra had African descent.

“Cleopatra VII was white—of Macedonian descent, as were all of the Ptolemy rulers, who lived in Egypt,” Kathryn Bard, professor of archaeology and classical studies at Boston University, said as Newsweek reported, according to the outlet.

“We know who her father was,” Gerald Kadish, teaching professor emeritus of history and Near Eastern studies at Binghamton University is also quoted as saying.

“He was certainly not Black. None of her siblings [were] anything but Greco-Macedonian.”

Kadish, however, acknowledged potential debate over her mother’s origins.

Israeli actress Gal Gadot has been slammed on social media after she was cast to play Cleopatra in the upcoming historical epic about the iconic Egyptian queen. 

The 35-year-old on Sunday confirmed she will play the titular role in a new movie after Paramount Pictures won the rights to the film in a bidding war between Universal, Warner Bros., Apple and Netflix.

The casting however, immediately drew outrage from confused social media users who wrongly assumed Cleopatra was black and North African.

Critics argued it was inappropriate for Gadot, a white Israeli woman, to play such a role and suggested the part be given to an African or black actress instead. 

 The outrage was met with ridicule by other social media users who were quick to point out the Egyptian ruler was actually ethnically Greek or Persian. 

'Cleopatra was NOT black, she was of Greek descent, and there are even effigies of the time on how she looked like. People need to stop trying to rewrite history with the SJW stupidity of today,' one user tweeted.

'People are upset because Gal Gadot, who isn't black, is playing Cleopatra, who wasn't black either,' Journalist Ian Miles Cheong quipped. 

Cleopatra is known as the last ruler of the Ptolemaic Kingdom in ancient Egypt before her death in 30 BC. 

While she was born in Egypt, she was the daughter of Pharaoh Ptolemy XII, a member of the Macedonian Greek royal family that ruled Egypt for 275 years, meaning Cleopatra was most likely fair-skinned.

(Yahoo News)  -  An Egyptian actress could face five years in prison for showing skin at a film festival.

Rania Youssef attended the closing event for the 40th Cairo International Film festival Nov. 29 in a glamorous black ensemble. The outfit consisted of a black leotard with a sheer black overlay. While the top layer was floor length and had beading, it was mostly see-through, revealing her legs. It did have a high neck, but the leotard dipped a bit lower, so part of her collarbone was visible through the overlay. It was also sleeveless.

While the gown hit a fashion high-note, it didn’t go over well in Egypt. Multiple lawyers filed a lawsuit against the 44-year-old accusing the actress of “inciting debauchery.” If convicted, she could face up to five years in jail, according to AFP. 

According to The Telegraph, lawyers accused her of committing an obscene act in public, “inciting debauchery and temptation,” and “spreading vice in ways that violate established norms in Egyptian society.”

Two of the lawyers “alleging obscenity” are Amro Abdelsalam and Samir Sabri. Apparently, Youssef’s appearance “did not meet societal values, traditions and morals and therefore undermined the reputation of the festival and the reputation of Egyptian women in particular,” Sabri told AFP.

The Egyptian Actors’ Syndicate commented on the dress without naming Youssef. “The appearance of some of the festival’s guests did not agree with the traditions and values of the society, and this has undermined the festival and the union which is responsible for its members behavior,” it said in a statement to AFP.

Egypt is a mostly conservative country with a Muslim majority. The Muslim religion requires women to cover much of their body for the sake of dignity, modesty, and “bodily integrity.”

Egyptian cleric Sheikh Sharif Abadi said in an interview on the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood Watan TV channel that, “We [Muslims] have never perpetrated a racial massacre.  We have never laid siege on a certain group and kill, let's say, all the Jews.”

When the interviewer asked Abadi, “So why do people say that the Ottoman Caliphate perpetrated a massacre against the Armenians?” he said, “It is a lie. The Armenians are the ones who betrayed [the Ottomans].  There is a historical story behind it, but [the massacre] never happened.  It is a lie fabricated by the British in order to topple the Ottoman Caliphate.”

Abadi then asked, “Are you saying that we had refrained from perpetrating racial massacres for 14 centuries, just to carry one out in the final two years of the Caliphate?  Does this even make sense?  It's a lie.”

“There was no racial massacre of the Armenians,” he declared. “They are the ones who started it.  They are the ones who betrayed us.  They are the ones who killed Muslims and burned mosques.”

Sharif Abadi further claimed, “We have never perpetrated a racial massacre or killed women and children…. The third thing is that we have never forced anyone to convert to Islam.”

(Times of Israel)  -  Ahmad al-Gamal, an Egyptian columnist for Egyptian daily Al-Yawm Al-Sabi, advocated in the newspaper on March 11 that Egypt sue the State of Israel for damages caused by the 10 Biblical plagues,

“We want compensation for the plagues that were inflicted upon [us] as a result of the curses that the Jews’ ancient forefathers [cast] upon our ancient forefathers, who did not deserve to pay for the mistake that Egypt’s ruler at the time, Pharaoh, committed,” the cranky journalist wrote, according to a translation provided by the Middle East Media Research Institute.

The telling of the tale features prominently in the Jewish observance of the spring holiday of Passover.

Muslims FORCE Christian girls to wear the hijab

(Express)  -  Schools across Egypt are forcing girls of every religion to wear the Muslim headscarf and children of both sexes are being punished if they cannot quote the Koran off by heart.

Even Muslim girls who refuse to wear a hijab are being forced out of school in a country where Coptic Christians have previously been able to live free of persecution.

Rahman Salem, 12, was ordered to leave her lesson and banned from taking part in any activities at her school in the Delta, northern Egypt.

Other pupils gave her nasty looks and started leaving the Muslim girl out over the incident.

She said: "I was made to stand all alone in the school courtyard. 

“The headmistress later came to me and said: ‘Here in school, you put on the headscarf. Outside, you may do as you wish.’

"No girl can show up with her hair showing. They all have to wear the hijab.

"Christian girls have to wear the hijab. As soon as the end-of-day bell rings, they start taking it off.”

Her mother said: “I was told ‘Stop being an idiot! Don’t you want your daughter to be decent?’.

"I was shocked when other mothers stopped me at the gate. ‘What’s that? How can your daughter show up like this?’ 

“I re-inspected my daughter’s uniform, and incredulously asked what was wrong. ‘Her head and neck have to be strictly covered!’"

Last month another school in the same province of Sharqia put in force rules to make all female students wear a hijab, with the al-Nassiriya School’s headteacher posting a large sign saying Islam dress is now part of the girls’ uniform.

And Christian seven-year-old Viola Samir told how her Islamic religious studies teacher held eight Christian pupils in her class of 35 children back.

The teacher then beat anyone who had not learnt the Koran off by heart.

Usually, Christian students in Egypt move to a different classroom during religious studies classes where they learn about Christianity while Muslims stay and learn about Islam.

(RT News)  -  Russian Airborne units have been sent to Egypt to take part in joint military drills, the first such bilateral exercise in Africa. Armored personnel vehicles and quadbikes are among the hardware being taken by the Russian side.

“International [military] exercises of the Russian and Egyptian Airborne forces on the African continent are being conducted for the first time,” the Russian Defense Ministry announced on Saturday.

The drill, codenamed “Defenders of Friendship 2016” is starting today and will last until October 26, aiming to practice joint anti-terrorist actions. Representatives of 30 countries will monitor the wargames.

“The Russian-Egyptian exercises involving units of airborne troops of the Russian Federation and the airborne troops of the Arab Republic of Egypt will develop common approaches to locate and destroy illegal armed groups in a desert environment,” the Russian Defense Ministry said.

Apart from the paratroopers “100 tons of military and special equipment” will be delivered to Egypt using 5 IL-76 transport planes, the Ministry added. The units are being reinforced by airborne combat vehicles (BMD-2) and armored personnel carriers (BTR-D).

The Russian military noted that “apart from the tracked and wheeled combat vehicles quadbikes have been also dispatched to the area of the drills.” The quadbikes are able to cross specific terrains which tracked or wheeled armored vehicles are unable to operate on.

The joint drills are based on earlier agreements between Moscow and Cairo. In June last year the Russian and Egyptian navies conducted their first ever joint naval drills in the Mediterranean Sea near Alexandria.

The “Friendship Bridge 2015” exercises involved five Egyptian ships, including frigates Taba and Dumyat and five Russian vessels, among them the guided missile carrier Moskva and the catamaran hover-borne missile corvette Samum.

(Newsweek)  -  Even at the height of summer, when the upper crust of Cairo descends on the nearby Mediterranean coast, the world’s largest open-air armory is a bleak place. With up to 17 million land mines buried in the sands of northwest Egypt, no one can set foot beyond the carefully demarcated boundaries for fear of losing a limb—or their life. Home to what’s likely the world’s largest unexploded minefield, the area is an eerie reminder of the ferocity of World War II. 

It saw serious action in the early 1940s as the British sought to stymie the advance of Nazi Army General Erwin Rommel’s vaunted Afrika Korps, and the German, British and Italian armies buried millions of tons of explosives as they battled one another across North Africa. But until recently, the minefields of the Sahara posed a problem mainly for local Bedouins, who are among the few who live in the area; since 2006, they’ve suffered more than 150 casualties.

Over the past few years, however, these munitions have become part of a new and worrisome trend. As the Islamic State and other jihadi groups have grown throughout the region, sometimes roaming unchecked across long, porous borders, a few have realized the potential power of this massive cache of explosives, much of it buried here by the Nazis. 

Military and civilian officials in Cairo say ISIS and other groups have already MacGyvered these decades-old mines, using their components for bombs, improvised explosive devices (IED) and other instruments of death. “We’ve had at least 10 reports from the military of terrorists using old mines, says Fathy el-Shazly, a former ambassador to Saudi Arabia who until recently served as Egypt’s land mine clearance czar. “Even now, these things trouble us in different ways.”

The phenomenon, he says, began in 2004, when extremists killed 34 people in the Sinai resort of Taba with seven bombs crafted from old munitions, and has become relatively common practice as security has devolved in parts of Egypt, especially since Ansar Beit al-Maqdis, the country’s most prolific homegrown jihadi group, pledged allegiance to ISIS in late 2014.

But for groups like ISIS’s fledgling affiliate that operates in Egypt’s vast arid interior, as well as in neighboring Libya, where ISIS also has a foothold, a bomb is a bomb. With periodic supply problems and an exceptional quantity of large anti-tank mines rich in explosives seemingly readily available, the temptation to pilfer the relics of Hitler’s war has proved too tantalizing to resist.

Most recently, in March, a jihadi IED attack on an army convoy near Egypt’s Red Sea coast that killed five soldiers was blamed on explosives purloined from old mines. Military officials, who recently received a delivery of more than 700 mine-resistant vehicles from the U.S. to help them combat an insurgency in North Sinai, are trying to ward off the threat, with mixed results.

Muslim mob stabs Christian to death

(AP) — A Muslim mob in southern Egypt stabbed a Coptic Christian to death over a personal feud, officials said Monday, stoking anger among Christians amid a spike in assaults on their community.

Bishop Macarious of the southern Minya governorate said the mob attacked the families of two priests with knives and batons in the village of Tahna al-Gabal late Sunday.

A family member, Fam Khalaf, 27, was killed and the father of one of the priests was wounded. Police said they arrested four people in connection to the incident.

On Monday, mourners gathered at a local church for prayers for the dead and protests. Marching to the graveyard, they chanted "with blood and soul, we redeem the cross."

Christians make up 10 percent of Egypt's mostly Muslim population. Sectarian violence occasionally erupts, mainly in rural communities in the south. Islamic extremists have also targeted Christians.

On Saturday, a group of Muslims attacked and torched houses of Christians in the village of Abu-Yacoub, also in Minya, following a rumor that a Christian intended to turn a kindergarten into a church. Security forces arrested at least 14 people. Last week, in another Minya village, Kom al-Lufi, a group of hard-liners attacked and torched houses of Christians after a similar rumor.

In May, a Muslim mob stripped an elderly Christian woman of her clothes and paraded her on the streets of another Minya village, following a rumor that her son had an affair with a Muslim woman. The incident sparked public uproar and prompted Egypt's President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi to publicly vow to bring the attackers to justice.

Egypt's Orthodox Coptic Christians strongly supported el-Sissi's ouster of his Islamist predecessor Mohammed Morsi, who hails from the Muslim Brotherhood group. Following Morsi's toppling, many Islamists claimed that Christians had conspired with the military against them. Attacks on Christian homes, businesses and churches subsequently surged in the south.

Why are Church leaders in the West so uniformly silent about the Muslim persecution of Christians? Jean-Clément Jeanbart, the Melkite Greek Catholic Archbishop of Aleppo, gave an interview to a French reporter in which he was highly critical of the mainstream media and even of his fellow bishops for ignoring the Muslim persecution of Middle Eastern Christians. “The European media,” he charged, “have not ceased to suppress the daily news of those who are suffering in Syria and they have even justified what is happening in our country by using information without taking the trouble to verify it.” And as for his brother bishops in France, “the conference of French bishops should have trusted us, it would have been better informed. Why are your bishops silent on a threat that is yours today as well? Because the bishops are like you, raised in political correctness. But Jesus was never politically correct, he was politically just!”

Archbishop Jeanbart was not the first to say this. “Why, we ask the western world, why not raise one’s voice over so much ferocity and injustice?” asked Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco, the head of the Italian Bishops Conference (CEI). Syriac Catholic Patriarch Ignatius Ephrem Joseph III Younan appealed to the West “not to forget the Christians in the Middle East.” The Melkite Greek Catholic Patriarch Gregory III has also said: “I do not understand why the world does not raise its voice against such acts of brutality.”

A Coptic Christian priest has been killed in “a hail of bullets” outside The Church of the Martyr of St George in Sinai, Egypt today.

Raphael Moussa, 46, was shot dead by an unidentified gunman next to his car, having left the church in Arish where he attended a mass, according to Boulos Halim, a church spokesperson.

Security officials said there was more than one gunman involved in the shooting. They said the priest had been followed and shot at when he emerged from his car.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack, but extremists in the Sinai have targeted Christians before, accusing them of working with the government.

A branch of ISIS has been active in the Northern Sinai region and reportedly killed hundreds of policemen and soldiers in the region.

“The whole situation in El-Arish and North Sinai is under threat,” said Halim. “Many people [Christians] have left.”…
