One of America's first Memorial Days  -  May 26, 1783




A Great Jubilee Day, first held on Monday May 26, 1783 in North Stratford, Connecticut, now Trumbull, commemorated the end of fighting in the American Revolutionary War.

This celebration included feasting, prayer, speeches, toasts, and two companies of the North Stratford militia performing maneuvers with cannon discharges and was one of the first documented celebrations following the War for Independence and continued as Decoration Day and today as Memorial Day with prayer services and a parade.

Monday the 26th day of May 1783 the inhabitants of North Stratford set apart as a day of public rejoicing for the late publication of peace. At one o'clock, PM, the people being convened at the meeting house, public worship was opened by singing. The Reverend James Beebe said a prayer well adapted and suitable for the occasion.  

They all sang a Psalm. Mr. David Lewis Beebe, a student at Yale College, made an oration with great propriety.  The congregation then sung an anthem. The Reverend Beebe, then requested the Ladies to take their seats prepared on an eminence for their reception when they walked in procession, and upwards of 300 being seated the committee who were appointed to wait on them supplied their table with necessaries for refreshments.

In the meantime the two companies of militia being drawn up performed many maneuvers, and firing by platoons, general volleys and street firing, and the artillery discharging their cannon between each volley with much regularity and accuracy. After which a stage was prepared in the center and the following toasts were given:

• 1st. The United States in Congress Assembled.
• 2d. General Washington and the brave Officers and soldiers of his command.
• 3d. Our Faithful and Illustrious Allies.
• 4th. The Friendly Powers of Europe.
• 5th The Governor and Company of the State of Connecticut.
• 6th. May the present peace prove a glorious one and last forever.
• 7th. May tyranny and despotism sink, and rise no more.
• 8th. May the late war prove an admonition to Great Britain, and the present peace teach its inhabitants their true interests.
• 9th. The Navy of the United States of America.
• 10th. May the Union of these States be perpetual and uninterrupted.
• 11. May our Trade and Navigation Extend to both Indies and the Balance be found in our favour.
• 12th. May the American Flag always be a scourge to tyrants.
• 13th. May the Virtuous Daughters of America bestow their favors only on those who have Courage to defend them.
• 14th. May Vermont be received into the Federal Union and the Green Mountain Boys flourish.

At the end of each toast a cannon was discharged.  After 14 toasts it is questionable how many were still standing.  But Americans then were made of sterner stuff than the current brain dead Twitter generation.

The whole was conducted with the greatest decency and every mind seemed to show satisfaction.

George Washington called Connecticut the Provision State because of supplies contributed to his army by Governor Jonathan Trumbull the only Colonial Governor to support the cause of America's Independence from Great Britain.

After a toast was drunk a cannon was discharged.  There were 14 toasts.  It is not recorded if the gun crew was still able to stand after toast number 14.

GM sponsors Communist propaganda film

General Motors (bailed out with American taxpayer dollars) has jumped into bed with the Chinese Communist Party and has funded a Communist propaganda movie.

Cadillac, a symbol of "American Freedom & Prosperity" division of General Motors, is quickly turning Communist Chinese. With the agreement by Cadillac to pay for the production expenses of a Chinese Communist Party propaganda film, the Cadillac brand now stands for something quite different: the appeasement of a power hostile to the United States in the name of financial gain.

GM CEO Daniel Akerson describes China as the "key to [GM"s] success. Our commitment to work in China, with China, and for China remains strong and focused on the future." Comrade Obama has been using GM in his election ads as one of the "successful" bailouts. GM was one of the auto companies receiving 2009 federal bailout money.

The film GM is funding, with an English title of  "Birth of a Party or The Great Achievement of the Founding of the Party ", is due to be released in China on June 15. Cadillac hopes to market its luxury cars to Chinese Communist Party leaders. Chinese Communist leaders can drive the luxury car that Communist President Obama drives.

The action of Cadillac is not merely an act of kowtow in the hope of profit. It is the reflection of a much wider strategy by China to establish dominance - economically, socially, politically, and militarily. In turn, this dominance is in the name not of Chinese civilization, but of an ideology introduced into general Chinese society by the Communist Party of China.

Cadillac's payment for this communist propaganda film occurs within the context of a single-party State in which all activities are monitored by a large and efficient secret police. The Chinese Communist Party is able to lay out courses of action that are to occur over many years.

Iran saves US ship from pirates

Iran's navy said Thursday it saved an American-flagged cargo shipthat was being attacked by pirates in the Gulf of Oman.

An Iranian warship responded to a distress signal from the US-flagged Maersk Texas, a cargo ship of 150 metres (500 feet) and 14,000 tonnes, which was besieged by "several pirate boats," the navy said in a statement reported by the official IRNA news agency.

The cargo vessel "was saved by the navy of the Islamic Republic of Iran" on Wednesday, IRNA added.

The pirates "fled the scene as soon as they spotted the presence" of the warship. Maersk Texas "thanked the Iranian navy and sailed towards its destination safely," it added.

It was the first time the Iranian navy protected a US ship from pirates.

Maersk Line told AFP that its vessel, Maersk Texas, had "thwarted an attack by multiple pirate skiffs at noon local while transiting the Gulf of Oman, northeast of Fujairah" but denied it had been helped by the Iranian navy.

"Maersk Texas heard from the Iranian navy over radio to the initial distress call, but our vessel received no assistance from the Iranian navy," spokesman Kevin Steers said in an email sent to AFP in Washington.

"All hands onboard are safe and unharmed, and the vessel is proceeding on its voyage," he added.

A Leftist Mexican congressional candidate's risque attempt to rally voters may instead see her kill some off, if they're driving when they see it that is.

Natalia Juarez has posed topless on a giant billboard situated in bustling locations in Mexico's second biggest and very conservative city, Guadalajara, in what she calls a 'provocative, different and unprejudiced' campaign.

The University of Guadalajara philosophy professor, who is running as a member of the Party of Democratic Revolution, is shown in the ad bare-chested, covering her breasts with her right hand and raising her left fist in a call to arms.

She is joined by six of her party colleagues, all in similar states of undress, and a slogan reads: 'Dare to join a new, unprejudiced nation-building project!'

The photograph will also be used on leaflets the campaign team will hand out to voters.

• Frightened investors are snapping up bonds that pay NOTHING.
• Once inflation is factored in, investors are essentially paying to park their money with the German government

There is no other way to put it.  Investors are frightened to death.  That fact is hidden from the public, but it is never the less true.  Total fear is the only reason an investor would put their money into a product that at best pays nothing, zero, nada for a return.  A fear of what?  A total economic meltdown? or Violence?

For the first time in history, Germany issued long term bonds with a zero percent coupon rate on Wednesday. The demand reveals the deep concerns investors have about the euro zone and their desire for a safe place to park their capital -- even if it costs them money to do so.

For now at least Germany and Greece share the same currency. But don't tell that to investors.  The German Finance Ministry pulled off a remarkable feat for a country in a threatened currency union: It issued €4.6 billion of two year bonds with a rate of zero percent. In other words, once inflation is factored in, investors are essentially paying to park their money with the German government reports der Spiegel.

According to German officials demand for the zero percent bonds was robust and added that Germany does not intend to offer up bonds with a negative interest rate. "As such, a coupon of zero percent is the lower limit," Reuters quoted a finance official as saying.

Still, it seems likely that, with investors looking for safe havens for their money, even negative interest rate bonds might sell. "Many investors are putting their money only in places where they are guaranteed to get it back," Commerzbank analyst Alexander Aldinger told the Berliner Morgenpost. "For a large degree of security, investors are willing to give up returns."

Even while borrowing costs have spiked in other euro-zone countries, rates on shorter term German bonds have already hit zero and even ventured into negative territory, meaning investors have been paying the German government to hang on to their cash. Rates on longer-term bonds have been trading consistently below the rate of inflation.

The zero percent bond issue is just the latest sign that concern about the crisis facing Europe's common currency is rampant. As are worries that the situation could become much worse before it gets any better.    (Spiegel.com)

Egyptian Christians are frightened of the rise of radical Islam

• No freedom of religion under Islam.

Many Egyptian Christians felt marginalized under former president Hosni Mubarak and are voting to keep an Islamist from replacing him out of fear that their community will be further sidelined.

In Shubra, a working-class Cairo neighborhood home to many Copts, voting lines were long, and the worry and tension felt by many Christians was palpable reports the Hurriyet Daily News.

"I don't want the Islamists. If they come to power and I oppose them, they will say I am criticizing their religion and who knows what they'll do to me? We can't talk to them," said 57-year-old Sanaa Rateb after casting her ballot. Dressed in a floral jacket topped with a pearl necklace, Rateb railed against those, including the Muslim Brotherhood, who object to a Christian or a woman standing as president.

"It's a mistake. Where is the principle of citizenship in all this? I have the right, as a woman or as a Copt, to stand for the presidency if I want," she said.

Nassim Ghaly, a young man with a cross tattooed on his wrist in the distinctive manner of Egyptian Christians, interjected: "God protect us if the Islamists come to power and they control the parliament and the presidency at the same time." Like all the Copts questioned, Rateb and Ghaly voted for Ahmed Shafiq, the last prime minister to serve under Mubarak, whose campaign posters were the most visible in Shubra.

"Shafiq is a respectable man who can restore the country," said Mary, who declined to give her family name.

Egypt's Coptic Orthodox church, whose patriarch, Pope Shenouda, died in March, has refrained from endorsing a candidate, but Mary insisted that within the community "everyone is voting for Shafiq." But she says the community is not looking to Shafiq to protect their rights as Christians.

"We don't want anyone to defend us. We just don't want any problems and to be left alone," she said.

The Middle East's largest Christian community has become increasingly concerned about the rise of Islam as a political force since the mass protests that toppled Mubarak.

"What we want is a non-religious state," which would guarantee the rights of all religious groups, Sanaa Halim, in her sixties, said.

"The Islamists trends are worrying," one of her friends added, declining to give her name. "And what have they done in parliament? Nothing, except talk about women and female circumcision." The friend says she was thinking about voting for former foreign minister and ex-Arab League chief Amr Mussa "because he's an experienced man," but in the end cast her ballot for Shafiq "because everyone's voting for him." A former air force chief-of-staff, Shafiq was named prime minister in the final days of Mubarak's regime.

A few months ago the residents of Wukan, China, a fishing village in the southern Guangdong province, marched to demand the government take action over illegal land grabs and the death of a local leader who was taken into custody. The village of around 13,000 inhabitants accused local officials of stealing communal land without compensating them. Anger boiled over when a village leader tasked with negotiating with authorities over the row died in police custody.

Farmers in eastern China battle with police escorting a crew to demolish their homes.

Nearly 1,000 farmers in eastern China on Friday clashed with hundreds of security forces sent to enforce the demolition of their homes, which officials called “illegal structures,” leaving dozens injured, witnesses said.

The skirmish, during which the farmers and police lobbed bricks and rocks at one another, took place in the Wenzhou area of Zhejiang province reports Radio Free Asia.  Police had been dispatched to Xiaobao village by officials in governing Cangnan county’s Wangli township to escort a demolition team tasked with “clearing illegal construction.”

The farmers are among the poorest residents of Xiaobao village and had built their makeshift shelters after their homes had been destroyed in a fire several years ago.  When police arrived to enforce the demolition, the farmers fought fiercely to defend the lean-tos, witnesses said, and were joined by other residents of the village.

The ensuing violence left “dozens” of villagers and “some” police wounded, as well as several police cruisers smashed, according to witnesses.  At least three villagers were detained during the melee.

Land acquisition for development, often resulting in lucrative property deals for local officials, sparks thousands of protests by local communities across China every month, many of which escalate into clashes with police.

In recent years, property owners all over China have complained that existing leasehold contracts are being flouted by local officials and developers keen to swell revenue coffers with lucrative land deals.

China already sees thousands of “mass incidents” across the country every year, according to official statistics.

• The Obamacare ruling is coming.
• The Supreme Court, the last fragment of the Federalist Party, still controls the fate of the United States. 

The Founding Fathers and the Federalist Party are long dead and buried.  But the last unchanged fragment of the Founders is still alive and well and more than willing to make rulings on what the law of the U.S. really is.

The Courts stands above politics as much as any human institution can.  Here are two new rulings.

9 to 0 Decision  -  The Court rejected the claim that a biological child of a married couple, even one born years after the father died, always qualifies as his survivor under the Social Security Act.
                                                                       .
About 18 months after his death, his widow gave birth to twins who were conceived through in vitro fertilization. She sought survivors benefits for the two children, contending that since they were the children of a married father, they should receive benefits he had earned.  The Social Security Administration said it was sympathetic but rejected her claim. 

9 to 0 Decision  -  The court made it harder for illegal immigrants to avoid deportation by arguing their immigrant parents had obtained legal status as lawful U.S. residents.

In a 9-0 decision, the court agreed with the government that individuals must earn their own leniency through years of lawful residence. A parent's legal residence is not transferred to a child, the court said in Holder vs. Martinez-Gutierrez.

The ruling reverses a decision from the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco, which was alone in adopting the more liberal rule that allowed children to take advantage of their parents' legal status.

Minnesota GOP taken over by Ron Paul delegates

The battle for Constitutional Federalism and Freedom goes on

• In state after state pro-freedom Republicans are taking back their party from the neo-New Dealer copycats.

Presidential candidate Ron Paul swept the board at the Minnesota State convention this past weekend, winning 12 of the 13 delegates to the Republican National Convention and effectively taking complete control of the party in the state.

Congressman Paul would have won all of the open delegate slots, for the fact that the 13th went to former presidential candidate and U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann, only after a Paul supporter withdrew his name from the ballot.

In addition to the delegate victory for Paul, Constitutional Federalist Minnesota state Rep. Kurt Bills, an ardent Paul supporter, soundly defeated the establishment Republican candidate in the race for the Senate.

“This is one of the greatest states that I have witnessed, where I have seen the transition, where the enthusiasm’s there,” Paul said during his speech at the Saturday convention.

The Paul campaign also scored victories in several other states over the weekend. Paul picked up eight voting slots plus one non-voting delegate and 11 alternates in Mitt Romney’s home state of Michigan.

“The rules were rigged against us in Michigan,” Ron Paul campaign spokesman Doug Wead wrote on his blog, “but still we won national delegates.”

Paul supporters also won 2 out of of 14 national delegates in Vermont, with two more considered potential allies, and they won 10 of 14 alternates in the state.

In Virginia district conventions, Paul supporters won 17 of 33 national delegates. The remainder of the state’s 49 delegates, including super delegates, are to be selected at the June 16th state convention.

“Victories in Minnesota and other states demonstrate that Ron Paul supporters possess the adaptability, organizational muscle, and unmatched enthusiasm required to continue winning delegates in upcoming contests,” said Ron Paul 2012 National Campaign Manager John Tate.    (Infowars.com)

Censorship is as old as man himself.  All cultures and religions have tried to control what people are allowed to read, hear or view.  Basically, people are frightened that someone, somewhere might be enjoying themselves without their permission.

Lady Gaga rocked the Philippines on Monday, defying critics and state censors as thousands of fans, many of them dressed as outrageously as she was, roared their approval.

Despite the protests of conservative Christians and warnings by state censors, Lady Gaga declared "I'm not a creature of your government, Manila".

She then belted out her controversial song "Judas", which her Filipino critics have labelled as blasphemous.  The audience tweeted photos of the US pop phenomenon wearing a full-length yellow dress inspired by Philippine national costume as she and a dance crew gyrated for the song "Born This Way" - a gay anthem.

Lady Gaga faced planned street protests and with censors in the house on orders to report any hint of blasphemy, devil worship, nudity or lewd conduct.

Ignoring the outrage of conservative Christians, up to 40,000 fans in the Catholic-majority nation have snapped up tickets of up to 15,840 pesos ($370) each to watch the US singer perform in Manila.

Lady Gaga's "The Born This Way Ball" world tour has been dogged by controversy in Asia, with an upcoming concert in Muslim-majority Indonesia cancelled on police orders for fear of violence from religious hardliners.

In the Philippines, Catholic leader Archbishop Ramon Arguelles urged the public to boycott her two concerts. "Her fans are in danger of falling into the clutches of Satan," he told reporters.

Former Manila mayor Lito Atienza said he was not against Lady Gaga herself but only against "certain acts and passages" in her songs and music videos.

Censors will be in the audience to monitor possible violations of a law against "immoral doctrines, obscene publications and exhibitions and indecent shows", said Glenn Agranzamendez, secretary to Pasay mayor Tony Calixto.

"He already formed two teams to monitor what will be shown at the concert and to file a report on the following day," Agranzamendez told AFP.
