(NY Times)  -  The United States no longer has a strategic monopoly on the technology, which is widely seen as the key factor in the next generation of warfare.

The Pentagon’s plan to bring A.I. to the military is taking shape as Chinese researchers assert themselves in the nascent technology field. And that shift is reflected in surprising commercial advances in artificial intelligence among Chinese companies.

The advance of the Chinese was underscored last month when Qi Lu, a veteran Microsoft artificial intelligence specialist, left the company to become chief operating officer at Baidu, where he will oversee the company’s ambitious plan to become a global leader in A.I.

In August, the state-run China Daily reported that the country had embarked on the development of a cruise missile system with a “high level” of artificial intelligence. The new system appears to be a response to a missile the United States Navy is expected to deploy in 2018 to counter growing Chinese military influence in the Pacific.

Known as the Long Range Anti-Ship Missile, or L.R.A.S.M., it is described as a “semiautonomous” weapon. According to the Pentagon, this means that though targets are chosen by human soldiers, the missile uses artificial intelligence technology to avoid defenses and make final targeting decisions.

The new Chinese weapon typifies a strategy known as “remote warfare,” said John Arquilla, a military strategist at the Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey, Calif. The idea is to build large fleets of small ships that deploy missiles, to attack an enemy with larger ships, like aircraft carriers.

“They are making their machines more creative,” he said. “A little bit of automation gives the machines a tremendous boost.”

“The A.I. technologies, including machine vision, sensor fusion, planning and control, on our car are completely home-brewed,” Gansha Wu said. “We wrote every line by ourselves.”

(UK Express)  -  A French mayor has fired a warning there is a threat of terrorism “inside France” and there are people “who can kill us are inside our cities”.

Jacques Myard, the mayor of Maisons-Laffitte and French National Assembly member, said people needed to be on their guard after a terror-style attack on a soldier outside the Louvre yesterday morning.

A machete-wielding man launched the attack while yelling “Allah Akbar”, according to Michel Cadot, the head of the French capital’s police force.

Mr. Myard blasted the Schengen agreement, which allows border-free travel throughout much of the EU, and said it was impossible to stop every terror attack.

He said: “We have two threats: the threat coming from abroad and of course this is a question of how we control our frontiers.

“This is a failure of Schengen. And we have also a threat inside France because we have a large community of Muslims.

“Not all Muslims are radicals. But we have spotted that over 10,000 of those Islamists can be radicals.

“What happened this morning, it shows really that the threat is inside, and of course you cannot have 100 per cent security everywhere.”

(Daily Caller)  -  The left-wing group that helped organize the violent shut down of the Milo Yiannopoulos event at the University of California, Berkeley on Wednesday is backed by a progressive charity that is in turn funded by George Soros, the city of Tucson, a major labor union and several large companies.

The Global Alliance for Justice, based in Tucson, is listed as an organizer and fiscal sponsor for Refuse Fascism, a communist group that encouraged left-wingers to shut down the Yiannopoulos event.

The call to arms succeeded. Yiannopoulos’ talk was cancelled after demonstrators lit fires, vandalized businesses, and assaulted Donald Trump and Yiannopoulos supporters.

Refuse Fascism, which includes Princeton professor Cornel West as one of its founding “initiators,” defended the response, issuing a statement on its website that called the shut down “righteous.”

And on its Facebook page, the group asserted that the vandalism and arson were not “violence.” Instead, the group argued that Yiannopoulos and Trump perpetrate violence through the policies they support.

“Dismantling police fences is not violent. And to compare preventing someone like that from speaking to the real-world violence that they perpetuate everyday is ludicrous,” reads one post on the group’s Facebook page.

(Asia Times)  -  Critics of President Trump’s temporary travel ban on seven Muslim nations should remember the Chinese proverb, “Kill the chicken and let the monkey watch.”

The much-criticized measure was a warning to the governments of the Gulf States, Turkey and Pakistan, who walk a fine line between support for Western counter-terrorism efforts and concessions to jihadists. It has had precisely the result that the White House intended, as a Dubai security official indicated on January 29. As Reuters’ Zawya.com reported:

Dubai’s deputy chief of police and public security, Lieutenant General Dhahi Khalfan Tamim, has praised US President Donald Trump’s recent decision to temporarily ban citizens from seven Muslim-majority states, saying in a series of tweets it was a ‘preventive measure’ to safeguard the country.

Kudos to President Trump for his brave decisions… they (these people) can only be dealt with through preventive measures,” he said in an Arabic-language tweet dated January 29 on his official Twitter account.

“Trump banned the citizens of countries in the embrace of Iran and prevented the Iranians from entering… sound decision,” he added in another tweet…. “It is not necessary for America to host backward people, it has received enough before,” he said in one tweet. “What would a Yemini, Iraqi, Iranian, Somali or a Syrian do in America? They have destroyed their countries, they should not destroy America.”

Counter-terrorism officials in Muslim countries contending with a jihadist minority view Trump as an ally against their domestic enemies.

More importantly, Trump has suddenly won admiration in Erdoganist circles in Turkey, who held the Obama administration in contempt. Writing in Al-Monitor, Hurriyet Daily News columnist Mustafa Aykol reports that Trump is the hero of the pro-government press, despite (or perhaps because of) the immigration halt.

Like the governments of Egypt and Saudi Arabia, Aykol observes, Turkey is relieved by Trump’s election victory. “President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the ultimate authority, has so far said nothing about the ‘Muslim ban.’ Moreover, his propaganda machine, consisting of at least 10 national newspapers, several TV channels and thousands of social media trolls, has also been unusually silent about the issue. Daily Sabah, the flagship of the pro-government empire, has been absolutely silent on the ban. Daily Star, another key newspaper, published only a small and neutral report. Daily Aksam did run a headline on the ban, but only with a subtitle: ‘He [Trump] must be given a chance.'”

As cited by Aykol, Daily Sabah columnist Hilal Kaplan wrote in a Turkish-language commentary that “the American president who is responsible for destabilizing the seven banned Muslim nations was none other than former President Barack Obama. It was of course bad that American Muslims were in trouble, but what really mattered were ‘Muslims in our region.’”

Obama helped overthrow Libya’s leader Muamar Qadaffi and Egypt’s President Mubarak, and backed Syrian jihadists against the Assad government with just enough firepower to keep the civil war going without a hope of finishing it. The US allowed the Sunni extremists who formed ISIS to operate undisturbed in the hope of directing them against Assad – a point made forcefully by Gen. Michael Flynn, head of the Defense Intelligence Agency under Obama and now Trump’s National Security adviser.

(Reuters)  -  Russia is testing President Donald Trump with a surge of violence in eastern Ukraine and the U.S. president should give Ukraine the lethal aid it needs to defend against the attacks, Senator John McCain said in a letter to Trump on Thursday.

Renewed violence flared this week between Moscow-backed rebels and Ukraine government forces that has caused the highest casualty rate since mid-December and cut off power and water to thousands of civilians on both sides of the frontline.

"That this surge of attacks began the day after he talked with you by phone is a clear indication that Vladimir Putin is moving quickly to test you as commander in chief. America’s response will have lasting consequences," McCain said in a letter to Trump released by his office.

Washington has supplied aid to Ukraine including drones, radar, first-aid kits, night vision and communications gear as part Democratic President Barack Obama's strategy of providing non-lethal military assistance while focusing on sanctions and diplomacy to end the war.

McCain urged Trump to use his authority under an existing defense policy law to provide lethal assistance to Ukraine.

"Vladimir Putin’s violent campaign to destabilize and dismember the sovereign nation of Ukraine will not stop unless and until he meets a strong and determined response," McCain wrote.

McCain also urged Trump to expand current sanctions against Russia that were put in place after its annexation of Ukraine's Crimea region in 2014.

Democratic Senator Ben Cardin, top Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said he would work with McCain and other senators to codify the existing sanctions into law.

"It is incumbent upon the Senate to clearly express its support for the sovereignty of Ukrainian and solidarity with our close allies in Europe," he said.

Nancy Pelosi, the top Democrat in the House of Representatives, also cautioned the Trump administration on Thursday against easing sanctions on Moscow, saying such a move would be "staggeringly dangerous."

A woman hit with mace as she spoke to a reporter about the importance of free speech. A black-clad mob of hundreds attacking anyone seen as an enemy. Blood, chaos, obscenities.

And all of it enabled by the so-called mainstream media.

A speech by conservative provocateur Milo Yiannopoulos was canceled Wednesday night at the University of California-Berkeley after self-described “anti-fascists,” clothed in black masks, attacked attendees, insisting they would not allow him to speak. Though Yiannopoulos was quickly evacuated, it was only the start of the violence.

Berkeley’s mayor, Jesse Arreguin, had previously tweeted “hate speech isn’t welcome in our community.”

Even after the chaos, Arrgeuin continued to complain the speaking engagement had featured a “prominent white nationalist,” though Yiannoupoulos has specifically condemned that ideology. Critics said the Berkeley police were all but absent during the riots or even told to stand down, as the school’s official webpage said police “exercised restraint and did not respond with force.”

The establishment media also did its best to defend the violence.

“Milo Yiannopoulos gets schooled at Berkeley,” smirked Newsweek.

CNN also muddied the waters by describing Yiannopoulos as an “Alt Right Speaker,” though both Yiannopoulos and so-called alt-right leaders themselves have denied he is part of the movement.

Scott Greer, an expert on campus politics and the author of “No Campus For White Men: The Transformation of Higher Education Into Hateful Indoctrination,” noted the irony of Yiannopoulos, a homosexual Jew who has been fiercely attacked online by the far right, now being called a “Nazi.”

“Milo is seen as a Nazi simply because he supports Trump and speaks out against mass immigration and Islam,” Greer said. “That’s all it takes to be a Nazi now. The left is attacking him so fiercely because they know they have allies on campus who will condone violent behavior and Milo presents a perfect opportunity to terrorize young conservatives and Trump supporters.”

(Gateway Pundit)  -  Ex-Obama official, Rosa Brooks calls for a ‘military coup’ against Trump in a blog post for Foreign Policy Magazine.

In a blog post for Foreign Policy magazine, Rosa Brooks, a former Obama administration official, outlined four ways to “get rid” of President Trump, including declaring him mentally unfit for command or carrying out a military coup.

Brooks is a Schwartz senior fellow at the New America Foundation, which is funded by billionaire George Soros’s Open Society Foundations. She served from 2009-2011 as Counselor to the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy and served as a senior adviser at Obama’s State Department.

Her posting is titled “3 Ways to Get Rid of President Trump Before 2020,” although the piece actually outlines four ways….

• Elect him out of office after his four-year term. “But after such a catastrophic first week, four years seems like a long time to wait,” she wrote.
• Impeachment. However, she lamented, “impeachments take time: months, if not longer — even with an enthusiastic Congress. And when you have a lunatic controlling the nuclear codes, even a few months seems like a perilously long time to wait.”
• Utilizing a claim of mental instability to invoke the 25th Amendment of the Constitution, which sets the path for the commander-in-chief’s removal if the “president is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office.”
• A military coup. She writes: “The fourth possibility is one that until recently I would have said was unthinkable in the United States of America: a military coup, or at least a refusal by military leaders to obey certain orders.”

• California Democrats never met a law breaking illegal alien they did not want to embrace or a soldier they did not want to screw over. Golden State Democrats have not created much good will.
• Now it looks like there will be a new round of military base closures with California jobs on the chopping block. I suspect Democrats and Republicans from other states will eagerly screw over California to protect their own states.

(Cal Watchdog)  -  Squeezed by the 2011 budget sequester, the Pentagon is eager to launch the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) process for the sixth time to close down thousands of facilities it says it no longer needs — freeing up billions of dollars in funding.

This could be bad news for California, which has 322 military installations pumping billions of dollars into the local economy around the Golden State. Eighteen of the bases are classified as large, triple the number of any other state.

While the Defense Department’s call for BRAC cuts have been routinely rebuffed by Congress since the 2005 round, this time it’s getting a friendlier reception. Rep. Adam Smith, D-Washington, the ranking Democrat on the House Armed Services Committee, said last week that he supported another round of BRAC cuts in 2018 and had introduced the Military Infrastructure Consolidation and Efficiency Act toward that end.

The ranking Republican and Democrat on the Senate Armed Services Committee — John McCain of Arizona and Jack Reed of Rhode Island, respectively — appeared ready to back a new BRAC if the idea was supported by new Defense Secretary James Mattis, who wants to target Pentagon waste but has not weighed in to date specifically about BRAC.

According to a Pentagon report to Congress last April, military leaders believe they could close 22 percent of all bases with no loss in defense capabilities.

Pentagon officials want to make sure the commission that designates bases for closure after receiving a list of recommendations from the various armed services is truly independent. The 2005 BRAC was considered a success by then-Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and other California officials because the Golden State escaped any major hits. But it was seen as a disaster by the Defense Department because political interference sharply reduced savings from closings.

Pentagon has targeted Norco base before

If the BRAC process is revived, the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Norco, shown above in a 2011 U.S. Navy photo, could be the California facility that is most at risk. The center, which employs more than 1,200 people and generates $150 million annually for the local economy, has been targeted for closure repeatedly by the Pentagon, most recently in 2005, only to win reprieves from the BRAC commission.

The possibility of a new BRAC round was seen as big news in San Diego County, home to the largest concentration of military personnel in the United States.

But while the county could have to deal with losing some facilities, it also has a chance to benefit from BRAC. The Washington Times reported in 2012 that Navy officials were interested in consolidating operations by moving warships from Washington state to San Diego. The need for such consolidations remains huge, according to former Defense Secretary Leon Panetta.

The base-closing process was launched by the Reagan administration and Congress in the late 1980s as the Cold War wound down and the threat posed by the Soviet Union waned.

Almost every day we are being hit over the head by stories of job loss on top of job loss.

• Just a few days ago the political hacks of Paris proudly announced the rolling out of driverless city busses. So say goodbye to hundreds of thousands of bus, taxi and truck driver jobs.
• Good paying, middle class oil worker jobs are being taken over by robots.
• Jobs in the military are being abolished as soldiers are being replaced with Terminators.
• This movement is worldwide with nations like China moving to robots workers.
• A Japanese company fired more than 30 workers and replaced them with an artificial intelligence system.
• We even see robots replacing journalists and writing newspaper articles.

Just Google robots and job losses. If you are not shared shitless by the endless stories then you have to be brain dead.

It is hard to wrap your mind around the simple fact that our fathers and the current generation will have lived at the peak of human wealth and prosperity.

The last 60 years saw a nearly perfect balance of demand for labor and good paying jobs creating a massive middle class.

But human labor is no longer in demand, but the population of the earth keeps growing and growing. New millions of humans are born and they need jobs, jobs that are vanishing at light speed.

Our economy is plunging rapidly into a world of permanent unemployment and poverty that will be ruled over by a wealthy class of Oligarchs.

The Hunger Games World

I get the feeling we are moving closer to a world that looks like The Hunger Games.

In The Hunger Games the nation of Panem consists of a wealthly capitol city where people live a lavish and technologically advanced lifestyle. The Elite are supported and surrounded by districts of people living in poverty and near starvation.

The poor are kept in line by a brutal Police State that is willing to kill as many people as needed to protect the system.

The signs are there that governments want to the prevent social unrest caused by unemployment. This month Finland started to give unemployed Finns an unconditional monthly payment of 560 Euros ($590). 

But how much "peace" can minimal welfare payments really buy? People want to live the good life. When that lifestyle was denied to them we saw violence like the French, Russian and Chinese revolutions.

We are moving into a Brave New World of eternal poverty along side that of massive wealth. There will be an added "bonus" that the poor will be policed by Terminators.

Business has no interest in paying humans to work. Those pesky humans actually want money, days off, sick pay, vacations and retirement benefits.

Robots will never stop working, never earn a pay check, but they also never pay taxes to support the system. No taxes coming in from robot workers means a collapse of government services from police to schools to the military. With tax income reduced government will turn to printing money.

Will most Americans be
put on reservations?
No longer able to support themselves the government put the Indians on reservations and gave them a minimal welfare existence. Indians had a future of eternal poverty and dependence on their Lords and Masters in Washington.

Non-Indian Americans are already on the new government provided "reservations". We see millions crammed into crappy government provided housing where they wait without hope for the monthly recharging of their EBT cards.
