In California, gas stations are facing a unique challenge. The station signs are only configured to go up to $9.99 per gallon and at several stations the price of diesel has reached that maximum. Diesel prices are higher than they have ever been in history.

Worse, according to some news reports the advertising of the maximum price of $9.99 per gallon is meant to signal to truck drivers that they have run out of diesel altogether. Expensive diesel is a hit to the economy, but running out of the fuel at any price is a whole different kind of crisis.

Our highways are filled with semi-trucks burning diesel to bring the products we depend on to the markets. Our freight trains use diesel to transport what is not transported by truck. When the price of diesel increases, the cost of everything moved by that diesel also increases. This is one reason we are seeing much more inflation than the government wants to admit.

The diesel crisis is getting so serious that even President Trump has been forced to admit it. Of course, instead of taking at least part of the blame over his war of choice against Iran and his continuation of the proxy war against Russia through Ukraine, he is blaming Ukraine’s military strikes on Russian energy infrastructure.

President Trump is now asking Ukraine to stop attacking Russian energy resources because diesel is a global commodity and the scarcity produced by the attacks is hitting us here at home. But the strikes deep inside Russia are guided by US intelligence, which provides the targeting data for Ukraine.

The Russia/Ukraine war is only part of the problem. Despite President Trump’s bluster about controlling the Strait of Hormuz, the fact is Iran is in control and very little oil – or anything else – makes it out without Iranian approval.

Yemen’s Iran-allied Houthis joining the fight only makes matters worse. Over the weekend they attacked Saudi Arabia’s bypass pipeline, taking much more oil off the market.

The real problem here is not oil or diesel. The real problem is that wars of choice spin out of control and destroy the economies of those who launch them. Empires throughout history have been undone by endless overseas wars. No amount of bragging about the size and strength of our military can change this reality.

Now we are seeing the chickens coming home to roost.

President Trump has justified tanking the US economy by claiming the attack on Iran was essential because they were about to get a nuclear weapon. Our intelligence community disagreed, but he refused to listen and took his cue from Netanyahu instead.

It turns out Iran actually does have a “nuclear weapon.” That weapon is the ability to control the world’s oil flows at a margin high enough to cripple the economies of any country seeking to conquer it. According to press reports, former Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard tried to warn President Trump that Iran would close the Strait of Hormuz if attacked but he didn’t want to hear it.

The Founders were determined to prevent the executive branch from being able to start wars for this very reason. The “people’s branch” of government – Congress – is where they placed the power to launch wars. We are now seeing the consequences of ignoring their very wise advice.

(Infowars)  US President Donald Trump has ordered his senior commanders to draw up a plan for a potential invasion of Greenland – a move that could potentially lead to a complete collapse of NATO, the Daily Mail reported on Saturday, citing sources.

The US president has long sought to take control of Greenland, an autonomous territory under Danish sovereignty, citing security concerns and the need to deter Russia and China, while not ruling out a military option to capture the island. This stance has put him at loggerheads with the European members of NATO, which have rallied behind Denmark.

According to the Daily Mail, Trump asked the Joint Special Operations Command to prepare invasion plans, but the Joint Chiefs of Staff are pushing back, arguing that the move would be illegal and lack congressional support. One source told the paper that senior generals “have tried to distract Trump by talking about less controversial measures,” such as a “strike on Iran.”

The report said that the push to seize Greenland was led by several Trump advisers, including political aide Stephen Miller, who were emboldened by the recent US attack on Venezuela and now want to move quickly to secure the island before Russia or China could make a move.

One diplomatic source warned that the invasion could lead to “the destruction of NATO from the inside.” He added that some “European officials suspect this is the real aim of the hardline MAGA faction around Trump… Occupying Greenland could force the Europeans to abandon NATO. If Trump wants to end NATO, this might be the most convenient way to do it.”

British diplomats cited by the Daily Mail have suggested that Trump views the Greenland operation as a way to distract American voters from the state of the US economy ahead of the mid-term elections. In this vein, one of the outlet’s sources suggested that Trump could pursue an escalatory approach in the short term before shifting toward a compromise.

Separately, the Daily Telegraph reported that European NATO members are discussing possible deployments to Greenland, including troops, ships, and aircraft, to guard the Arctic and assuage Trump’s concerns.

The United States will provide Ukraine with $15 billion in additional funding leveraged from frozen Russian central bank assets.

This is according to Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, who announced the plan on Monday, Dec. 30. The move is part of a broader $20 billion U.S. contribution to Ukrainian aid funding under the Group of Seven's (G7) $50 billion loan framework to Ukraine, secured with future revenues from seized Russian assets held by banks outside of Moscow's reach. (Related: Antony Blinken: U.S. has provided Ukraine with over $100 billion in aid since 2022.)

The G7 – comprising the U.S., Canada, Japan, the U.K., France, Germany and Italy – initially pledged the $50 billion loan in June 2022, using profits from frozen Russian assets as collateral.

Of the estimated $300 billion in Russian assets immobilized globally, around $213 billion is held in the Brussels, Belgium-based clearing house Euroclear. The firm froze the assets under its control in late February 2022, shortly after the European Union imposed sanctions on Russia in response to the escalation of the conflict with Kyiv and the beginning of its special military operation in Ukraine.

The frozen funds have already generated billions in interest alone, and Euroclear has already transferred around €1.55 billion ($1.6 billion) to Ukraine back in July.

The Kremlin has strongly criticized the asset seizures, with spokesperson Dmitry Peskov condemning the measures as "theft" and warning of potential legal retaliation. Peskov's remarks came in response to Shmyhal’s announcement that the U.S. had already transferred the first $1 billion installment from the frozen Russian central bank funds to Ukraine.

On Saturday we were among the first outlets to report that the United States is preparing to deploy THAAD anti-ballistic missile systems in Israel, a major development which will put American troops directly in harm's way (or... boots on the ground) amid the tense showdown with Iran. 

The Pentagon in follow-up statements to the NY Times has confirmed the THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defense) systems will be sent to Israel, and that about 100 American troops will operate them.

This means that at least 100 American soldiers will be placed in positions likely to be targeted by another potential barrage of ballistic missiles from Iran, at a moment Israel is preparing its own counterattack in the wake of the Oct.1st strikes (which witnessed about 200 missiles sent) on Israeli territory from the Islamic Republic. Each full missile battery and associated systems cost American taxpayers some $800 million to $1 billion.

All of this follows the Pentagon having weeks ago deployed thousands more US troops to the broader region amid escalation in Lebanon. Some of those forces were sent to Cyprus, and others likely to Gulf countries or possibly Jordan.

The Pentagon has tried to deflect from language which portrays the obvious: that without Congressional authorization American troops are entering an escalating overseas war zone to defend a foreign country.

(Newswars)  The United States was one of 14 nations to vote against a United Nations resolution calling for a “humanitarian truce” in Gaza amid the Israeli-Hamas conflict.

Meanwhile, 120 countries on Friday voted in favor of the resolution, which calls for an “immediate, durable and sustained humanitarian truce.”

The United Nations General Assembly on Friday adopted a resolution calling for an “immediate, durable and sustained humanitarian truce” between Israeli forces and Hamas militants in Gaza. It also demands “continuous, sufficient and unhindered” provision of lifesaving supplies and services for civilians trapped inside the enclave, as news reports suggest Israel has expanded ground operations and intensified its bombing campaign.

During the general assembly, an amendment proposed by Canada and backed by over 35 Member States including the US, also sought an explicit condemnation of Hamas, but it did not pass after failing to get two-thirds support.

The adopted resolution marks the first formal response by the U.N. to the Hamas attacks on Israel and Israel’s subsequent counteroffensive in Gaza.

Other Security Council resolutions failed to pass on four occasions following vetoes by the U.S., Russia or China.

The 14 nations who voted against the resolution were as follows: The United States, Austria, Croatia, Czechia, Fiji, Guatemala, Hungary, Israel, the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay and Tonga.

Pentagon Solves Arms Shortage By Sending Seized Iranian Weapons To Ukraine

(Zerohedge)  CNN is reporting that the US administration is set to transfer weapons it seized from Iran to Kiev...

"The US will transfer thousands of seized Iranian weapons and rounds of ammunition to Ukraine, in a move that could help to alleviate some of the critical shortages facing the Ukrainian military as it awaits more money and equipment from the US and its allies, US officials said."

US CENTCOM revealed Wednesday that the process has already started, with over one million seized rounds of Iranian ammunition having been given to Ukraine forces thus far.

"The government obtained ownership of these munitions on July 20, 2023, through the Department of Justice’s civil forfeiture claims against Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC)," the Pentagon statement explained.

Previously, the Justice Department announced over the summer the seizure of "over 9,000 rifles, 284 machine guns, approximately 194 rocket launchers, over 70 anti-tank guided missiles, and over 700,000 rounds of ammunition." These had been obtained by the US Navy from foreign vessels caught "trafficking" in Gulf regional waters.
