Jimmy Carter: "The U.S. is no longer a Democracy"

Carter is Right
We have moved from a Constitutional Republic
to rule by a corrupt Oligarchy

By Gary;

Never in their wildest dreams did the Founding Fathers want a new United States to be ruled over by a ruling class of the corrupt ultra-super rich.  They created a Republic, not an oligarchy.

Unfortunately we have been going down the road to rule by Elite Authoritarianism for a number of decades.

In an interview former President Jimmy Carter was asked his opinion of the 2010 Citizens United decision and the 2014 McCutcheon decision. These two historic decisions enable unlimited secret money (including foreign money) now to pour into U.S. political and judicial campaigns.
Carter answered:
"It violates the essence of what made America a great country in its political system. Now it's just an oligarchy with unlimited political bribery being the essence of getting the nominations for president or being elected president. And the same thing applies to governors, and U.S. Senators and congress members. So, now we've just seen a subversion of our political system as a payoff to major contributors, who want and expect, and sometimes get, favors for themselves after the election is over. ... At the present time the incumbents, Democrats and Republicans, look upon this unlimited money as a great benefit to themselves. Somebody that is already in Congress has a great deal more to sell."

Both Parties are Bought & Paid For

First let me say that corruption is bipartisan and as old as man himself.

That being said, since World War II there has been a massive revolution in American politics where multi-national corporate cartels have literally worked to buy and sell members of Congress.  The goal is always money such as tax breaks, government contracts or open borders for cheap labor.

The mountains of raw special interest cash pouring into pockets of hand picked candidates like Jeb Bush and the Hildabeast is staggering.  And believe me these groups want to be paid back for their "investment" in a candidate.

But the power of these groups is near total in Congress where they own likely 70% of each chamber.

In 2014 my California Congressional seat was targeted by both parties.  Over $10,000,000 was spent with 80% plus being outside cash coming from Wall Street allies of either party.

Democracy has been turned upside down. What the local voters want has no meaning.  Our candidates are being selected for us and financed by centralized Billionaire Cartels based in Washington and Wall Street.

We have competing interest: 1) the right of the people to select their own representatives and 2) the First Amendment allowing anyone to spend any amount of money on "speech" even when it is nothing more that bribery.

I am coming around to Theodore Roosevelt's attack on the trusts as a
dangerous accumulation of power in a democracy.

.
“It may well be that the determination of the government (in which, gentlemen, it will not waver) to punish certain malefactors of great wealth, . . . . I regard this contest as one to determine who shall rule this free country—the people through their governmental agents, or a few ruthless and domineering men whose wealth makes them peculiarly formidable because they hide behind the breastworks of corporate organization.”
Theodore Roosevelt
Address at the Pilgrim Memorial Monument, Provincetown, Mass., August 20, 1907

Textbook Example
The Clintons have been furiously sucking on the corrupt teats of the malefactors of great wealth.
