The Chinese Communist Party controlled giant state sovereign wealth fund is looking to make its first significant
investment in the Australian dairy industry, as it tries to lock up food
supplies for its growing middle class.
In a potential test case for foreign investment laws, China Investment Corp,
which is estimated to have $US190 billion to invest outside its home market,
sent four executives to Tasmania this month.
They inspected two large dairy operations in the state’s north which have a
combined value of more than $200 million and significant capacity for

An investment from a sovereign wealth fund like CIC has the potential to be
even more politically fraught, although in 2011 a subsidiary of China’s
state-owned COFCO won approval to purchase Queensland’s Tully Sugar.
The CIC executives are known to have spent two days inspecting the Little
Lion dairy operation, which is on the market for around $80 million. The
privately owned group also has a 20 per cent stake in the Smithton milk
processing plant, which only came on-line last week at a cost of $80
million.
The chairman of Wahaha, Zhong Qinghou, is known to have visited Tasmania
recently and has shown some interest in the Little Lion operation.
He had previously tried to make an investment in the West Australian dairy
industry but could not find farms of sufficient scale.
Giddings’ visit to China was partly aimed at promoting the $400 million
expansion of irrigated farmland in Tasmania, which should result in the size of
the state’s dairy herd doubling over the next decade.

overseas governments buying our businesses when Australia is getting out of

5pm Friday night announcement?” This was a reference to the timing of the
Treasurer’s decision to green-light the sale of Cubbie Station.
And Senator Heffernan said the foreign takeovers act needed to be brought up
to date from the 1970s, and asked whether the produce of the dairy farms would
bypass the market and be returned directly to China.
“In the event that there is a proliferation of acquisitions that bypass the
commodities market, you will distort the commodities market,’’ he said.
“This isn’t about xenophobia, we have been allowing foreign investment for

GOP Speaker Boehner channels Karl Rove to protect the Conservative majority
Speaker John Boehner has implemented a Karl Rove-like campaign strategy aimed at helping Republicans in blue and red states that are not considered competitive in the 2012 presidential contest.
Boehner is focused on so-called “orphan” districts, knowing that winning these races is the key to retaining the House GOP majority.
In February of last year, Boehner tasked his political staff with developing a program through the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) that would partner with state party operations that lack resources in a presidential election year. The joint venture is unique because the NRCC has traditionally focused on messaging, polls and TV ads.

The Hill reports a political staffer familiar with the situation said that “the whole orphan dilemma was that you’ve got, effectively, the majority hanging in the balance of states that are not going to get any attention from the presidential campaign. They are not going to get a single dollar … to do the voter identification, to do the turnout, to do those basic blocking and tackling.”
Republican officials say Boehner is essentially using a page from Karl Rove’s political playbook, which uses “microtargeting” strategies to turn out GOP voters. Furthermore, Barry Jackson, Boehner’s senior adviser, worked under Rove for eight years in the George W. Bush White House.
The Speaker selected Chris McNulty to be deputy executive director to man the “orphan victory effort” in close contact with the NRCC, RNC, state parties and state delegations. McNulty formerly headed the Ohio Republican Party.
Taking on such a project was complicated because the NRCC has had limited coordination with state parties, especially in the nine orphan states: California, Illinois, New York, New Jersey, Texas, Kentucky, Minnesota, Utah and West Virginia.

Arguably the only competitive race in New Jersey is for Rep. Jon Runyan’s (R) seat, while California has a handful of tough contests, including Rep. Dan Lungren’s (R) Sacramento-based seat and freshman Rep. Jeff Denham’s (R) Central Valley-based district.
Other Republicans who look to benefit from the orphan program include Reps. Judy Biggert (Ill.), Robert Dold (Ill.), Bobby Schilling (Ill.), Ann Marie Buerkle (N.Y.), Chris Gibson (N.Y.), Nan Hayworth (N.Y.) and Francisco “Quico” Canseco (Texas).
Boehner pledged to raise half the money needed for implementing the novel NRCC/state party partnership up front, tasking the state parties and members of those delegations with the other half. To date, Boehner has helped raise $10 million for the orphan victory effort.

In recent remarks to an Accuracy In Media conference, "ObamaNation: A Day of Truth," former Democratic pollster and analyst Pat Caddell said, "I think we're at the most dangerous time in our political history in terms of the balance of power in the role that the media plays in whether or not we maintain a free democracy."
Caddell noted that while First Amendment protections were originally provided to the press so they would protect the liberty and freedom of the public from "organized governmental power," they had clearly relinquished the role of impartial news providers.

Nowhere was this more evident than during the tragic death of a U.S. ambassador in Libya that was lied about for nine days, because the press and the administration did not want to admit it was a terrorist attack.

"Yesterday there was not a single piece in The New York Times over the question of Libya. Twenty American embassies, yesterday, are under attack. None of that is on the national news. None of it is being pressed in the papers."
Caddell added that it is one thing for the news to have a biased view, but "It is another thing to specifically decide that you will not tell the American people information they have a right to know."

Homes were torched in the overnight violence which came after a 25,000-strong mob ran riot in Ramu, a village in the district of Cox's Bazaar in Bangladesh , on Saturday night, smashing temples and setting fire to dozens of homes.
The riots later spread to Patia, home to a sizable Buddhist population outside the southeastern port city of Chittagong, where mobs attacked and vandalized four temples.
Ahmed said soldiers were now patrolling Buddhist neighborhoods and temples in Cox's Bazaar to prevent a further outbreak of violence.
"The army and BGB (border guards) have been deployed in the trouble spots," he told AFP. "The situation is calm but tense."

A Muslim mob torched and vandalised a village of Buddhists in Cox's Bazaar's Ramu Upazila early on Sunday in one of the worst religious attacks in Bangladesh.
A senior army officer, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said around 1,000 troops had been deployed to Cox's Bazaar, including 300 in Ramu.

"We have secured the temples and Buddhist areas. Our teams have set up tents for the people whose houses were burnt," he told AFP. "We have adequate forces. Things are getting back to normal."
Sunil Barua, a journalist who lives in a Buddhist neighborhood in Ramu, said two of the temples attacked over the weekend were 300 years old.
"They looted Buddha statues from the temples, and shops owned by Buddhists were also looted," he told AFP by phone.
"The villages look like as if they were hit by a major cyclone."
Buddhists, who make up less than one percent of Bangladesh's 153 million population, are based mainly in southeastern districts, close to the border with Buddhist-majority Myanmar.

The Washington Post reports about 1,000 Buddhist families fled their homes after the attacks were launched late Saturday. As the unrest continued through early Sunday, many Buddhist-owned homes and shops were looted. Nojibul Islam, a Cox’s Bazar police chief, said at least 20 people were injured.
Many in the impoverished neighborhood of Merunglua lost everything.
“I was in my shop. They suddenly came and set my shop on fire,” grocery owner Prodip Barua told The Associated Press. “I started running and took my two children and wife from my home and fled the area.”
He knew his shop had been burned to ashes, but when he returned Monday he was shocked to see that his home was also destroyed.

The conservative super PAC affiliated with Republican strategist Karl Rove has jumped back into the Indiana Senate race with a nearly $1 million ad buy highlighting Democratic nominee Joe Donnelly's support for President Barack Obama's policies.
The Washington Examimer says the Indiana buy is part of more than $6.4 million worth of air time that Crossroads GPS and American Crossroads bought this week against Democrats in six competitive Senate contests, according to Federal Election Commission records. The money was also dedicated to Senate races in Florida, Ohio, Virginia, Nevada and Wisconsin.

Indiana, while appearing firmly in GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney's camp, is emerging as a battleground state for control of the Senate. Groups supporting Democrats also have poured about $1.5 million into the race in the past six weeks, hoping to take away the seat held for 36 years by Republican Richard Lugar.
State Treasurer Richard Mourdock defeated Lugar in the Republican primary in May and was an early favorite to keep the seat in GOP hands.
Crossroads Wisconsin Ad
In Florida, American Crossroads appealed to the state's elderly population with a $1.8 million ad buy focused on changes to Medicare that were made in the health care bill. The ad claims that Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson cast the deciding vote for the bill, which it said cuts Medicare spending and puts an unelected board in charge of coverage decisions.
Republicans have not shied away from the Medicare issue in this year's House and Senate races.
Democrats are focusing their Medicare ads on a proposal by Rep. Paul Ryan, the GOP vice presidential nominee, that would change the program for those under 55 from a fee-for-service program to one in which beneficiaries use a government subsidy to help buy insurance coverage.

Meanwhile, Republicans are focusing criticism on the spending cuts called for in the Democratic-led health overhaul. Those cuts were directed at private insurers and hospitals.
In Virginia, the Crossroads ads highlight former Gov. Tim Kaine's comment during a debate that he could support making more people pay federal income taxes.

Texas: GOP Hispanic Congressman Francisco Canseco Poll Shows Him With 10-Point Lead Over Democrat
A tight race that could go either way.
Rep. Francisco “Quico” Canseco’s (R) campaign released an internal poll today that showed he had a 10-point lead over Leftist state Rep. Pete Gallego (D).
Roll Call reports the poll, conducted Sept. 23-25, showed Canseco up over Gallego 47 percent to 37 percent. Eight percent said they would support “other” and 8 percent were undecided.
Forty percent of respondents had a favorable impression of Canseco, while 31 percent viewed him in a negative light. As one would expect in a race with an incumbent, Gallego lags behind in name identification. But like Canseco, he has a net favorable rating. Thirty-one percent of those surveyed viewed him favorably, while 27 percent viewed him unfavorably.
Wes Anderson of OnMessage conducted the Canseco poll of 400 likely voters. It was conducted via bilingual live interviews. The margin of error was 4.9 points.

Police State - The Justice Department's use of electronic devices to intercept phone numbers, email addresses and online information has climbed by 64 percent since 2009, according to a study of records released under the Freedom of Information Act.
Government data shows that from 2009 to 2011, the combined number of court orders for so-called pen registers and trap and trace devices on phones rose from 23,535 in 2009 to 37,616 in 2011, according to the American Civil Liberties Union from data in a FOIA request.
The Washington Guardian reports though used far less frequently, the combined number of court orders targeting individuals' email and network communications data rose from 360 in 2009 to 1,661 through the end of 2011. When combined, the total intercepts represent a 64 percent increase.
BIG BROTHER: Trapwire surveillance spying on the public It's been revealed that the U.S. government is secretly spying on its citizens using an advanced surveillance programme. Software called TrapWire allegedly has access to all security cameras across the country.
Documents from the US Department of Homeland Security show that it paid $832,000 to deploy Trapwire in Washington DC and Seattle. So-called "private" companies are gathering the information for Big Brother in order to avoid the 4th Amendment and the Bill of Rights.
A pen register records all numbers dialed from a particular telephone line. A trap-and-trace device records the telephone numbers of inbound callers to a suspected criminal telephone.
"In every instance cited here, a federal judge authorized the law enforcement activity," Justice Department spokesman Dean Boyd said.
The standard for obtaining a court order for such surveillance requires that the information sought is relevant to an investigation. That standard is far less than the law requires to obtain a warrant to conduct a physical search: probable cause to believe a crime has been committed.
An ACLU staff attorney, Catherine Crump, said the process for these less intrusive warrants is a "rubber stamp" devoid of any kind of meaningful court review. . (Washington Guardian)

The GOP is missing something this election season. Jobs may decide the election, but the Republicans miss the fact that Comrade Obama is pretty strong on foreign policy.
To listen to the standard hot air of knee-jerk GOP propagandists like Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity you would think Obama is a total failure. But that is pure partisan red meat throwing for ratings points and to sell advertising.
A look at the drone strikes listed below shows how Obama has played it smart. Use technology to take out anything that even remotely looks like terrorist leadership.
Obama took the US out of Iraq and is working on Afghanistan. That sits well with most voters. The only thing different the GOP could put on the table is full scale invasions with large armies or permanent armies of occupation with the resulting endless flow of body bags back home. A war weary public would vote against the Republicans in droves for following that policy.

Libya - The GOP cannot really attack Obama on Libya. Almost the entire GOP membership in Congress either stood on their chairs screaming for Obama to attack and destabilize Libya or they hid under their chairs allowing an unconstitutional war to move forward.
Either way the Republicans bring nothing to the foreign policy table that is different from Obama.
Egypt - The GOP drums are beating loud about Obama "allowing" the Muslim Brotherhood to take power. Pure 100% non-thinking partisan bullshit.
Now what exactly was Obama supposed to do about massive crowds of hundreds of thousands of Egyptians demanding free elections? Should Obama have ordered our air force to napalm the crowds? Should we have dropped an airborne division on Cairo to shoot down people in the streets? or should Obama have backed the military dictators of Egypt to send in their tanks to "clear" the streets in a bloodbath?
Again, the Republicans have no credible foreign policy alternative. Egypt held free elections on their own and got the government they voted for. Case closed.
Iran - This is a tough one for any President. Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan have shown us full well the limits of American military power.
Any sane person knows an invasion is out of the question. We cannot even maintain order in Afghanistan or in Chicago. An attack on their port facilities and a blockade might do the trick, but again you are in danger of expanding a war.
An attack on Iran might even cause an Islamic coup in nuclear armed Pakistan and perhaps see a pro-Iran Iraqi government enter a conflict on their side.
No, these are not the easy black and white issues painted by both parties.

The "BIOSwimmer" robot features faithfully replicated fins and a flexible tail to pull off quick maneuvers like the real-life fish. Homeland Security made the choice to fund the robot made by the Boston Engineering Corporation in Waltham, Mass., with an eye toward missions such as exploring the flooded areas of ships, inspecting oil tankers or patrolling U.S. harbors to watch out for suspicious activity.
"It's called 'biomimetics,'" said David Taylor, program manager for the BIOSwimmer at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. "We're using nature as a basis for design and engineering a system that works exceedingly well."
