DHAKA, Bangladesh (New York Times)  —  Bangladesh’s capital city reeled in shock on Sunday as clues began to flood social media about the privileged backgrounds of the half-dozen attackers believed to have butchered 20 patrons of a restaurant during a bloody siege here late last week.

The six attackers were killed when the army stormed the Holey Artisan Bakery to end an 11-hour siege early Saturday.

The police declined to name the young men because nobody had shown up as of Sunday night to identify their bodies, but friends and relatives recognized photographs that were posted on a messaging app by the Islamic State, along with praise for the violence.

The men, all in their late teens or early 20s, were products of Bangladesh’s elite, several having attended one of the country’s top English-medium private schools as well as universities both in the country and abroad.

Among them was the son of a former city leader in the prime minister’s own Awami League, the governing party.

“That’s what we’re absolutely riveted by,” said Kazi Anis Ahmed, a writer and publisher of the daily newspaper The Dhaka Tribune. “That these kids from very affluent families with no material want can still be turned to this kind of ideology, motivated not just to the point of killing but also want to be killed.”

That children of the country’s upper classes appear to have joined militant Islamists in an act of such brutality highlighted the radicalization among the largely moderate Muslim population here, a process that has accelerated in recent years.

The attackers intended to kill foreigners, whom they shot and then hacked with sharp weapons, blaming them for hampering the progress of Islam, one of the hostages later said.

For more than three years now, Islamist militants have murdered atheist bloggers, members of religious minorities.

SINGAPORE: The 27 Bangladeshi nationals arrested in Singapore with terror links "could easily have changed their minds and attacked Singapore," said Minister for Home Affairs K Shanmugam in a Facebook post on Wednesday (Jan 20).

He noted that the men, who were meeting on a regular basis at a mosque, had materials on techniques of silent killing and videos of jihadist propaganda. While the minister did not name the mosque, Bangladeshi newspapers The Daily Star and New Age cited case documents stating that it was the Angullia Mosque near Mustafa Centre.

"Our security agencies have done well in picking them up early. I had said yesterday that the threat of terrorism is real. We are getting daily reminders of that," said Mr Shanmugam, who had highlighted in a speech on Tuesday that Southeast Asia has become "fertile ground" for terrorism. 

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong described the 27 men as a "serious threat" to Singapore, even though they did not plan to carry out their "nefarious" activities in the country.

"We are tightening up our security, and acting to protect our racial and religious harmony. Radicalisation and terrorism must never take root in Singapore," he said in a Facebook post. He also urged people to be on guard for suspicious activities.

Minister-in-Charge of Muslim Affairs Yaacob Ibrahim also expressed concern, following the arrests.

“Terrorism is a continuing threat that can have a grave impact on all of us. I appeal that we be more vigilant, whether against radical teachings and ideologies, or of any suspicious activities around us,” said Dr Yaacob in a Facebook post.

(Hindustan Times)  -  Two people suffered gunshot wounds and seven others less serious injuries in a bomb and gun attack on Thursday at a Hindu temple in northern Bangladesh, a senior police official said.

Humayun Kabir, deputy inspector general of police for the northern region, told Reuters that three unknown attackers had arrived at the temple in Dinajpur district, 415 km (260 miles) north of the capital Dhaka, by motorbike.

They detonated several homemade bombs and then shot at people who were fleeing the building in panic, he said. About one hundred people were gathered in the temple.

Two people with gunshot wounds were taken to hospital. Kabir said two people had been detained following the incident, which he said was similar in nature to a bomb attack on Saturday on a Hindu religious gathering in the same area in which at least six people were injured, three critically.

Police suspect banned militant group Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) may be behind the attacks, Kabir said.

Muslim-majority Bangladesh has suffered a rising tide of Islamist violence over the past year although attacks on Hindu religious gatherings remain rare.

Four online critics of religious militancy have been hacked to death, among them a US citizen of Bangladeshi origin. In October, an Italian doctor working as a missionary was shot and wounded in the same area as Thursday’s attack, which had earlier seen an Italian and a Japanese citizen die in separate attacks claimed by Islamic State.

(New York Times)  -  Attackers armed with machetes killed a blogger in Bangladesh on Friday, the fourth killing of an online critic of religious extremism in less than six months.

Niloy Chatterjee, 40, who advocated secularism, was killed in his flat in the capital Dhaka, said police official Mustafizur Rahman.

"We are speechless. He was demanding justice for the killing of other bloggers," said Imran Sarker, head of a network of activists and bloggers.

"Who will be next for demanding justice for Niloy?"

Chatterjee, who used the pen-name Niloy Neel, was a critic of religious extremism that led to bombings in mosques and the killing of civilians, Sarker said.

Chatterjee was also one of hundreds of bloggers driving a movement demanding the death penalty for Islamist leaders accused of atrocities in Bangladesh's 1971 war of independence.

Militants have targeted secularist writers in Bangladesh in recent years, while the government has tried to crack down on hardline Islamist groups seeking to make the South Asian nation of 160 million, whose population is majority Muslim, a sharia-based state.

• In February, machete-wielding assailants hacked to death a U.S. citizen of Bangladeshi origin and critic of religious militancy, Avijit Roy, and seriously injured his wife and fellow blogger, Rafida Bonya Ahmed.

• On March 30, Washiqur Rahman, another secular blogger who aired his outrage over Roy's death on social media, was killed in a similar fashion.

• Another secular blogger, Ananta Bijoy Das, was attacked by machete-wielding attackers and killed in the northeastern district of Sylhet on May 12.

(CNN)  -  When American writer Avijit Roy was hacked to death on a Dhaka, Bangladesh, street in full view of horrified onlookers, blogger Washiqur Rahman doubled down.

Fundamentalists were choking free thought in his secular nation, he wrote. But they couldn't silence it.

His friends warned him to be careful, to watch what he posted online. But Rahman dismissed those concerns, saying his Facebook profile page didn't even bear his picture. They don't even know what I look like, he told them.

Hacked to Death

On Monday, the 27-year-old Rahman fell victim to the same brazen act that killed Roy, hacked to death by two men with knives and meat cleavers just outside his house as he headed to work at a travel agency.

He was so maimed -- with wounds to his head, face and neck -- that police identified him through the voter identification card he was carrying.

His death was the second time in five weeks that someone was killed in Dhaka for online posts critical of Islam -- but they are hardly the only two who've paid a steep price.

In the last two years, several bloggers have died, either murdered or under mysterious circumstances.

"The despicable murder of Avijit Roy last month should have led authorities to step up protection measures for bloggers and others at risk. The killing of Washiqur Rahman today is another clear example of the Bangladeshi government's utter failure to ensure the safety of those at risk," said Abbas Faiz of Amnesty International.

"How many more bloggers will have to be attacked before action is taken?"

DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP)  —  A prominent Bangladeshi-American blogger known for speaking out against religious extremism was hacked to death as he walked through Bangladesh's capital with his wife, police said Friday.

The attack Thursday night on Avijit Roy, a Bangladesh-born U.S. citizen, occurred on a crowded sidewalk as he and his wife, Rafida Ahmed, were returning from a book fair at Dhaka University. 

Ahmed, who is also a blogger, was seriously injured. It was the latest in a series of attacks on secular writers in Bangladesh in recent years.

A previously unknown militant group, Ansar Bangla 7, claimed responsibility for the attack, Assistant Police Commissioner S.M. Shibly Noman told the Prothom Alo newspaper.

Roy "was the target because of his crime against Islam," the group said on Twitter.

Roy was a prominent voice against religious intolerance, and his family and friends say he had been threatened for his writings.

About 8:45 p.m. Thursday, a group of men ambushed the couple as they walked toward a roadside tea stall, with at least two of the attackers hitting them with meat cleavers, police Chief Sirajul Islam said. The attackers then ran away, disappearing into the crowds.

Two blood-stained cleavers were found after the attack, he said.

Islamic extremism has made few inroads in Bangladesh, a Muslim-majority nation of 160 million people, but there have been a series of similar attacks in recent years blamed on militants.

A divide has become increasingly visible between secular bloggers and conservative Islamic groups, often covertly connected with Islamist parties, with the secularists urging authorities to ban religion-based politics while the Islamists press for blasphemy laws to protect their faith.

Islam is Bangladesh's state religion but the country is governed by secular laws based on British common law, and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has repeatedly said she will not give in to religious extremism.

Roy had founded a popular Bengali-language blog, Mukto-mona, or Free Mind, which featured articles on scientific reasoning and religion.

The website has apparently been shut down since the attack, but Roy defended atheism in a January posting on Facebook, calling it "a rational concept to oppose any unscientific and irrational belief."

Anujit Roy, his younger brother, said Roy had returned to the country earlier this month from the U.S. and was planning to go back in March.

In 2013, another blogger, Ahmed Rajib Haider, who also spoke out against religious extremism, was killed by still-unidentified assailants near his Dhaka home. In 2004, Humayun Azad, a prominent writer and teacher at Dhaka University, was seriously injured in an attack when he was returning from the same book fair.

Baki Billah, a friend of Roy and a blogger, told Independent TV that Roy had been threatened earlier by people upset at his writing.

"He was a free thinker. He was a Hindu but he was not only a strong voice against Islamic fanatics but also equally against other religious fanatics," Billah said.

"We are saddened. We don't know what the government will do to find the killers. We want justice," he said.

(Chakra News)  -  Chittagong Nursing Institute lecturer Ms Anjali Debi Chaudhuri was brutally killed by extremist militants. She was targeted by uknown assailants from the Islamic Chattra Shibir, the student wing of Jamat E Islami Bangladesh because she told the nursing students to follow the dress code of the institute and not to wear Hijab & burka. 

Due to her keeping in check with government and workplace protocol, she enforced the institute’s dress code. This led some Islamic Militant groups to get  upset and and therefore brutally attacked her in broad daylight, killing her. Just a few years ago, Prof. Gopal Krishna Muhuri was brutally killed by Islamic militants in Chittagong because he was a vocal and upcoming professor who spoke for human rights of minorities, especially atrocities against Hindus.

The dead Anjali Devi, 57, wife of Dr Rajendra Chowdhury, was a senior teacher of the college on the Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) campus. She along with her family used to live in a rented house at Gaser Goli of Telipatti under Panchlaish Police Station.

Sources says, Anjali  Debi Chowdhury has been brutally killed  by the perpetrators of “Hijab Movement for the Nurses” organised by the Militant Islamist group Jamayat e Islami Bangladesh guided student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir.

Deceased’s husband Rajendra said, “Anjali left home around 8:30am for her college. Within 15 minutes, the guard of the house informed him that his wife was stabbed by some youths”.

“When I reached the spot, which is around 30-40 yards off the house, I saw my wife lying in a pool of blood. I took her to the CMCH by a CNG-run auto-rickshaw.”

Quoting witness Mohammad Yasin, Panchlaish police said four youths attacked Anjali while she was waiting at Telipatti intersection for a rickshaw.

Locals could not come to save the teacher as the attackers were equipped with sharp weapons and firearms.  The criminals ran away left Anjali in pool of blood in a almost finished condition, brandishing firearms.

Anjali was admitted to the hospital around 9:45am. She died in the intensive care unit around 12:00 noon, said in-charge of CMCH police camp.

Minara Begum, principal of the nursing college, said, “As far as I know, she [Anjali] was on good terms with her students and colleagues. And I never heard of any complaint against her who had been working in the college for nearly 34 years.”

Around 400 students of the college brought out a procession in the afternoon, demanding the arrest of the perpetrators.

Eight popular Bangladeshi Bloggers have blacked out their websites as part of a 24-hour protest over the arrests this week of four online writers.

Those being held have been accused of hurting the religious sentiments of the country's Muslim majority.

The government has been accused by liberals of appeasing Islamists calling for tough blasphemy laws.

Hardliners want those they perceive to be anti-Islamic Bloggers to face the death penalty reports the BBC News.

But liberals say that bloggers' freedom of speech must be preserved. The sites are mostly run by individuals or small teams.

'Bullied'

"Bangla Blogosphere begins blackout in protest against harassing and cracking down on bloggers," reads a notice on the home pages of one of the protesting sites inaccessible from noon (0700 GMT) on Thursday.

Detectives on Wednesday arrested blogger Asif Mohiuddin, who was attacked in January following alleged postings on the internet suspected of being derogatory to Islam and the Prophet Muhammad.

Mohiuddin was remanded in custody by a court on on Thursday for three days to enable police to question him. His blog is suspended.

His arrest came a day after police arrested three other bloggers in Dhaka facing similar allegations.

In February Blogger Ahmed Rajib Haider was killed outside his home for allegedly insulting Islam.

Critics say that the authorities have been bullied into carrying out the arrests following threats from radical Islamist organisations.

They have threatened to unleash anarchy if "atheist bloggers are not hanged".

Dhaka Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Molla Nazrul Islam told local media that Mr Mohiuddin and other Bloggers face charges of "instigating negative elements against Islam to create anarchy".

The issue of blogging became an issue in Bangladesh after a group of online activists took to the streets of Dhaka in February to celebrate the sentencing of Jamaat-e-Islami leader Abdul Kader Mullah to life in prison for crimes committed during the country's 1971 war of liberation from Pakistan.

In recent weeks a group of Bloggers, including Haider, had launched mass protests demanding his execution and a ban on Jamaat-e-Islami, the country's largest Islamist party.

Jamaat denies being involved in war crimes and says the tribunal is part of a government vendetta against the party.

China has ousted the United Kingdom as the world’s fifth-largest arms exporter, mainly because of sales to Pakistan, according to a new report on global weapons sales released.

The report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) said Chinese arms exports rose 162 percent between 2008 and 2012, propelling China into the top five arms exporting countries for the first time since the Cold War. This marks the first time that the United Kingdom has not been one of the top five conventional arms exporters since at least 1950, the earliest year covered by SIPRI data.

Pakistan accounted for 55 percent of Chinese arms exports between 2008 and 2012, according to SIPRI. During that time, China’s share of global arms exports rose to 5 percent from 2 percent during 2003 to 2007, boosting the country from eighth to fifth place in the global ranking reports the Washington Post.

“Military exports are one way for China to increase its international status,” said Li Hong, secretary general of the China Arms Control and Disarmament Association. “China needs to increase its influence in regional affairs, and from that perspective it needs to increase weapons exports further.”

Chinese defense spending is now second only to U.S. military outlays. At current growth rates, Chinese spending could catch up with the United States, which accounts for more than 45 percent of global military spending, by as early as 2025.

For now, however, Chinese exports lag behind other countries with much smaller populations and economies. The U.S share of global conventional arms exports is 30 percent. Russia, meanwhile, accounts for 26 percent, German exports constitute 7 percent and France, 6 percent.

Islamic fanatics have attacked dozens of Hindu temples and hundreds of homes across Bangladesh since an Islamist leader was sentenced to death for war crimes last month.

Bangladesh Puja Udjapon Parishad, a group which looks after Hindu temples said 47 temples and at least 700 Hindu houses had either been torched or vandalised since the verdict against Delwar Hossain Sayedee.

Sayedee, vice-president of the country's largest Islamic party Jamaat-e-Islami, was sentenced to hang on February 28 for crimes including rape and murder committed during the 1971 independence conflict.

The sentencing of Sayedee and other Jamaat-e-Islami leaders has triggered the worst violence in impoverished Muslim-majority Bangladesh since independence, with 85 people so far killed in the unrest reports the Hindustan Times.

Hundreds of people demonstrated against the recent burning of Buddhist monasteries and Hindu temples in Bangladesh by Muslims, who complained that a Buddhist man had insulted Islam. General Secretary of Himalayan Buddhist Cultural Association, Siliguri, Sonam Lhundup Lama urged the central government and the United Nations, Human Rights Commission, to intervene the matter.

Lama added that many people sustained injuries and many houses of locals were burnt. Buddhist monks, social activists along with school children took out to streets holding photos of injured monks, vandalised temples' and raised slogans against the atrocities being done against the Buddhist people in Bangladesh.

Kazal Debnath, a vice-president of Bangladesh Puja Udjapon Parishad, blamed the attacks on Hindu temples and homes on Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir.

"It was the work of the Jamaat and Shibir, but we also accuse the government, the police and the local government representatives including (our) MPs for failing to protect the temples and our community," he told AFP.

He said the attackers were given free rein to "torch our temples, houses and properties".

But foreign minister Dipu Moni told diplomats last week that Jamaat and Shibir attacked Hindu temples and houses in a "pre-planned manner".

Hindus, who make up nearly 10% of Bangladesh's 153 million-strong population, are traditionally seen as supporters of the Awami League, which brands itself as a secular party.

They were the main targets during Bangladesh's 1971 independence war against Pakistan and during post-poll violence in 2001 when a centre-right party allied with Jamaat won a two-thirds majority.

Jamaat-e-Islami leaders have been on trial at the domestic International Crimes Tribunal, accused of colluding with Pakistan and pro-Pakistan militias during the war for independence.

Homes were torched in the overnight violence which came after a 25,000-strong mob ran riot in Ramu, a village in the district of Cox's Bazaar in Bangladesh , on Saturday night, smashing temples and setting fire to dozens of homes.

The riots later spread to Patia, home to a sizable Buddhist population outside the southeastern port city of Chittagong, where mobs attacked and vandalized four temples.

 

Ahmed said soldiers were now patrolling Buddhist neighborhoods and temples in Cox's Bazaar to prevent a further outbreak of violence.

 

"The army and BGB (border guards) have been deployed in the trouble spots," he told AFP. "The situation is calm but tense."

"We have secured the temples and Buddhist areas. Our teams have set up tents for the people whose houses were burnt," he told AFP. "We have adequate forces. Things are getting back to normal."
 

Sunil Barua, a journalist who lives in a Buddhist neighborhood in Ramu, said two of the temples attacked over the weekend were 300 years old.

 

"They looted Buddha statues from the temples, and shops owned by Buddhists were also looted," he told AFP by phone.

 

"The villages look like as if they were hit by a major cyclone."

 

Buddhists, who make up less than one percent of Bangladesh's 153 million population, are based mainly in southeastern districts, close to the border with Buddhist-majority Myanmar.

The Washington Post reports about 1,000 Buddhist families fled their homes after the attacks were launched late Saturday. As the unrest continued through early Sunday, many Buddhist-owned homes and shops were looted. Nojibul Islam, a Cox’s Bazar police chief, said at least 20 people were injured.

Many in the impoverished neighborhood of Merunglua lost everything.

“I was in my shop. They suddenly came and set my shop on fire,” grocery owner Prodip Barua told The Associated Press. “I started running and took my two children and wife from my home and fled the area.”

He knew his shop had been burned to ashes, but when he returned Monday he was shocked to see that his home was also destroyed.

“How will I survive now? How will I send my children to schools?” he sobbed. “I have lost everything.”

Bottom line  -  Muslims hate non-Muslims.  Period.

That fact of life might offend the limp-wristed Liberals in their la-la land pretend world, but it is just as much a fact today as it was in 629 AD when Muslim invaders started to spread their hate through conquest.

The 9-11 attacks were but a minor wake up call.  The small number of deaths in the twin towers are nothing compared to the millions killed in centuries of Islamic conquest.  Coming soon to a nation near you:  Islamic biological and nuclear terrorism in the name of Allah.

So what do we do?

I am sorry to be a hard ass, but the 1,400 years of Islamic history proves that Muslims are not good neighbors. 

If you are unlucky enough to be a religious minority in a Muslim nation then you know first hand how really fucked you are.  It makes no sense to deliberately import Muslims into our country.

And yes, Muslims are different from other religions.

Containment of Islam  -  A lot of the raving right-wingers scream that we must "win" the war against Islam.  Those statements are examples of ignorance or a desire to sell books or get ratings on TV and radio.

Many have tried, but you cannot win the war against Islam.  What you can do is to prevent the spread of Islam through containment much as we contained the Communism during the Cold War until it collapsed under its own weight.

Containment does not mean we can't send in some drones here and there to take out bad guys, but we need to recognize that a World War II type "total victory" will not happen.

Careful diplomacy is needed to build alliances with both more moderate Muslim leaders as well as countries threatened by Islamic terrorism.  The freedom of information of the Internet needs to be used to undermine the ridged pre-medieval thought of Islamists.

Hopefully at some point there will be a Muslim Reformation of thought that will bring a new era of freedom and peace.

Until then a low level containment war must go on.

Arab Riots in Egypt, Yemen 'out of control'
The wave of anti-American protests is gathering strength as it sweeps across the Muslim world. Police in Yemen have reportedly fired warning shots at another mob of protesters heading for the US embassy.

LEBANON - Security forces opened fire in the northeastern Lebanese city of Tripoli, killing one person after a crowd angry over the film set fire to a KFC and a Hardee's restaurant. About 25 people were wounded in the melee, including 18 policemen who were hit with stones and glass.

SUDAN - Several hundred protesters stormed the German Embassy in the capital, Khartoum, burning a car parked behind its gates and trash cans. Police fired tear gas, pushing the protesters outside the embassy's gates. There appeared to be no injuries to embassy staff and no apparent damage to the building. Most protesters dispersed, but a group marched to protest at the nearby British Embassy.

YEMEN - Security forces shot live rounds in the air and fired tear gas at a crowd of around 2,000 protesters trying to march to the U.S. Embassy in the capital, Sanaa. Police kept the crowd about a block away from the embassy. Friday's demonstration came a day after hundreds stormed the embassy compound and burned the American flag.

EGYPT - Riot police clashed with hundreds of protesters blocks away from the U.S. Embassy in Cairo, as the president broadcast an appeal to Muslims to protect embassies and tried to patch up strained relations with Washington. After weekly prayers, a crowd in Cairo's Tahrir Square tore up an American flag, and waved a black, Islamist flag. When protesters tried to move toward the embassy, ranks of police confronted them, firing tear gas.

IRAN - Thousands shouted 'Death to America' and 'Death to Israel' in Tehran in a demonstration after Friday prayers. Some burned the American and Israeli flags. State TV says similar protests were held in other Iranian cities.

BAHRAIN - More than 2,000 protesters chanted against the film and burned American and Israeli flags after Friday prayers in a Shiite mosque in Diraz, outside the capital, Manama. Security forces were absent, even though the area is a hotbed of opposition in Bahrain's 19-month Shiite-led uprising against the Sunni ruling system. Separately, Bahrain's Interior Ministry ordered media regulators to attempt to block access to the film clip in the Gulf kingdom.

IRAQ - Hundreds demonstrated in Baghdad's northern Sunni neighborhood of Azamaiyah, some shouting: 'No, no America! No, no to Israel,' and, 'We are ready to sacrifice ourselves for our Prophet.' Dozens also marched in Baghdad's Sadr City, a poor Shiite area in the capital's northeast. In the southern city of Basra, about 1,000 took to the streets and burned the American and Israeli flags. One banner said: 'Freedom doesn't mean offending two billion Muslims.'

TUNISIA - A crowd of several thousand demonstrators protested outside the US embassy in Tunis. Police respond to stone-throwing with tear gas. An AP reporter on the scene witnessed several people overcome by intense clouds of gas. An army helicopter flew overhead while armored vehicles protected the embassy.

Around 10,000 Muslims from half a dozen Islamist groups staged a noisy protest in Bangladeshi capital Dhaka, burning and trampling American flags while chanting anti-US slogans.

Demonstrators threw bottles and stones at police, who responded by firing stun grenades. Four protesters were arrested and the crowd was prevented from reaching the U.S. consulate.

WEST BANK - In the city of Nablus, about 200 people demonstrated against the film as Muslim clerics throughout the territory preached against it in Friday sermons.

SYRIA - About 200 protesters waved the Syrian flag and shouted anti-American slogans outside the long-closed U.S. Embassy in Damascus. The crowd held banners saying: 'He who curses the Prophet doesn't seek democracy' and 'a nation whose Prophet is Mohammad, would never kneel down.' The U.S. embassy has been closed since February because of the country's bloody conflict that has killed about 23,000 people.

AFGHANISTAN - About 1,500 protested in the eastern city of Jalalabad, shouting 'Death to America' and urged President Hamid Karzai to cut relations with the U.S.

PAKISTAN - Hundreds of hardline Muslims held peaceful protests against the film throughout Pakistan, shouting slogans and carrying banners criticizing the U.S. and those involved in the film. Police in Islamabad set up barricades and razor wire to prevent protesters from getting to the diplomatic enclave, where the U.S. Embassy and many other foreign missions are located. Protests were also held in Karachi, Peshawar and Lahore, where protesters shouted 'Down with America' and some burned the U.S. flag. About 200 policemen and barbed wire ringed the U.S. Consulate in Lahore.

GREAT BRITAIN - In London, around 250 protesters marched noisily but peacefully through Britain's capital to the U.S. embassy. The group, which called itself the 'Defenders of The Prophet,' held placards denouncing the U.S. and perceived Western imperialism.

TURKEY - Hundreds of people gathered in Istanbul's Beyazit Square to protest the prophet film. The protest was organized by Turkey's main Islamist political party, Saadet.

MALAYSIA - About 20 protesters held a peaceful demonstration outside the U.S. Embassy in the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur. They briefly shouted 'Allahu akbar!' or God is great, and handed reporters a letter addressed to the American ambassador expressing anger over the movie and calling for greater respect for religions.
