Obama orders an "embargo" on Russia’s Crimea

FDR embargoed Japan - That turned out well.
Embargoes are an act of war
  • Crimea has been a part of Russia almost 200 years longer than Hawaii has been a state, but Obama pushes us into conflict and possible war.
  • Many think that creating an "evil" Russian enemy for the masses to hate is right out of Orwell's 1984.  Distract the public from their economic troubles with a foreign enemy.

Barack Obama imposed sweeping sanctions on Russia-annexed Crimea on Friday (Dec 19) with an executive order prohibiting American exports of goods or services to the contested peninsula and barring Crimean imports.

"The executive order is intended to provide clarity to US corporations doing business in the region and reaffirm that the United States will not accept Russia's occupation and attempted annexation of Crimea," Obama said in a statement.

The action also bans new US investments in Crimea and authorises the US Treasury to impose sanctions on people and companies operating there reports Channel News Asia.

"I again call on Russia to end its occupation and attempted annexation of Crimea, cease its support to separatists in eastern Ukraine, and fulfill its commitments under the Minsk agreements," Obama said.

The president's move comes a day after he signed into law a congressional bill allowing him to impose new sanctions on Russia over its alleged support of pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine. The law also authorizes the president to send lethal weapons to Ukraine's military. But Obama stressed he would not change his administration's "carefully calibrated" sanctions policy on Russia.

Obama's Crimea order follows the European Union's decision Thursday to also place new sanctions on Crimea, as a show of resolve against Moscow during an European Union (EU) leaders summit where the bloc urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to make a "radical change" in his stance on Ukraine. In the sanctions - coordinated with Washington - the EU agreed to ban all investment in Crimea and cruise ships from its ports.

Napoleon's Continental System
Simply, blockades or embargoes are mostly failures.  The British navy blockaded France under Napoleon.  France in turn embargoed trade with Britain.  The only real result was minor damage to the economies of both sides.  The wars themselves went on and on and on.
Thomas Jefferson's Embargo  -  Jefferson's worthless embargo against Britain was meant more to punish his Federalist Party enemies than the English.  Britain laughed at Jefferson and kept right on with their policies.
World Wars I and II  -  Germany was cut off from foreign trade in both world wars.  In neither case did it really impact the Imperial or Nazi German war machines.
Japan Embargo  -  FDR's embargo actually caused the Japanese Empire to roll the dice, attack Pearl Harbor and invade the Philippines.  FDR wanted the U.S. to go to war.  Some speculate that FDR's embargo was designed to encourage a Japanese attack.

Cuban Embargo  -  This embargo has been going on longer than most Cubans or Americans have even been alive.  Again, the embargo has been a total failure.  The Cuban government has proven they don't need trade with the U.S. to exist.
