The Pennsylvania Supreme Court has denied an emergency request that would have blocked the governor’s order to close all gun retailers in the state in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

The court ruled on Sunday evening that the gun shops could be closed down, letting the order go into effect on Monday.

The gun shop shut down was part of an order by Democrat Governor Tom Wolf that closed all businesses that are not considered to be “life sustaining.” Gun rights groups argued before the Supreme Court that this should include weapons retailers, but they were denied.

The order shut down the stores on Monday without any timeline for when they can reopen.

The Free Beacon reports that in a dissent joined by two other justices, Justice David Wecht said the order, as written, represented an “impermissible intrusion upon a fundamental constitutional right,” pointing to other industries that have been exempted from the shutdown. He said that there should be accommodations made for constitutionally protected gun shops, the same way there were exceptions made for restaurants. 

“In my view, it is incumbent upon the Governor to make some manner of allowance for our citizens to continue to exercise this constitutional right,” Wecht said, arguing gun stores could be permitted to operate on a limited basis. “Such an accommodation may be effectuated while preserving sensible restrictions designed to slow the spread of COVID-19, but nonetheless provide a legal avenue for the purchase and sale of firearms, thus avoiding an impermissible intrusion upon a fundamental constitutional right.”

The majority judges were not required to provide an explanation or argument for why they voted the way that they did.

Atheists Demand Censorship of Private Religious Speech

(WND)  -  The atheist activist group Freedom from Religion Foundation is demanding that a school district in Texas censor private comments made by its teachers in their off hours.

The non-profit First Liberty, however, is advising the district “to simply ignore this unfounded complaint and recommit Greenville ISD to the protection of the private speech of the citizens it serves.”

The atheist group was reacting to two school employees, Chip Gregory and principal Dale Mason, appearing in a video endorsing a Christian organization called The Men and Ladies of Honor.

FFRF condemned “unconstitutional religious promotion” by school employees.

“We write to ensure that the district ends all such unconstitutional practices and brings the Men and Ladies of Honor groups into compliance,” FFRF threatened in a letter.

First Liberty, which defends constitutionally protected religious rights suggested a simple response: Ignore FFRF.

“Opponents of religious liberty are trying to censor religious expression and prevent private citizens from exercising their religious beliefs outside of school,” said Jeremy Dys, deputy general counsel to First Liberty Institute.

“Public school employees are absolutely free to exercise their religious liberty rights outside of school. If school officials receive an angry letter from activists with such baseless legal claims, they should just ignore them,” he said.

First Liberty explained that in their free time, Gregory and Mason volunteer in Men of Honor and Ladies of Honor programs.

“Recently, the two appeared for less than two minutes in a much longer promotional video produced by a private organization and published by a private citizen on a website over which Greeneville ISD has no control.”

First Liberty explained FFRF was demanding the school district investigate, “take down the privately produced video (from a private website they do not control), and instruct Gregory and Mason to stop participating with this private organization.”

The team argued that in “their free time, away from school and school events, school employees are free to involve themselves in religious activities.”

(CNS News)  -  On his nationally syndicated radio talk show Monday, host Mark Levin blasted the Senate for its reluctance to confirm Mike Pompeo as Secretary of State, suggesting that the U.S. Senate has no purpose since the adoption of the 17th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

“[W]hat is the purpose of the United States Senate?” asked Mark Levin. “Once the 17th Amendment was adopted and senators were elected directly as opposed to from state legislatures, what is the purpose of the United States Senate? They say it’s the most deliberative body. It’s not the most deliberative body. They don’t debate amendments to bills. They didn’t even debate the spending bill six weeks ago, five weeks ago. The United States Senate has no purpose since the 17th Amendment.”

Below is a transcript of Levin’s comments from his show on Monday evening:

“To attempt to deny a president his nominee for secretary of state, the oldest cabinet position, makes me call into question – and I’m going to tell you this quite seriously – what is the purpose of the United States Senate? “The initial purpose of the United States Senate was to represent the views of the states. The Framers of the Constitution set up this bicameral body: The House of Representatives, directly elected every two years, every member – there’s your democracy – and the United States Senate to represent the priorities of the states.

 

“Today these senators go in any direction they want to. Most of them spend their time in the Senate positioning themselves for higher office, president or vice president. Others decide to make a career of it and stay there 30, 40 years.

“None of this would be taking place if the states could function through the Congress as was intended by the Framers.

“So, the states have no say in the federal government or in federal legislation, no say.

“And the Senate is the most bizarre institution of any institution of governance. It doesn’t really have a purpose in my view.”

(CNSNews.com) – Marine Gen. Joseph Dunford, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, pushed backed gently on Monday against members of Congress who have voiced surprise at the size of the U.S. troop presence in Niger, calling the 800 military personnel there “a relatively small footprint.”

“If you look at the numbers, we have 800 Americans, we have 4,000 French and there’s over 35,000 local partners that are operating there,” Dunford told reporters at the Pentagon.

He contrasted that to the situation in Afghanistan, where approximately 11,000 Americans are stationed.

“So, what the American people need to know is, with a relatively small footprint, we are enabling local forces [in Niger] to deal with these [terrorist] challenges before they become a threat to the American people, and to help them to deal with the challenges so they don’t further destabilize their local area or region,” he said.

(AFP) - Russia on Thursday accused the US-led coalition of deploying missiles against Syrian troops at a garrison in the east of the country, where rebels battling the Islamic State group are being trained.

In a statement, the defence ministry said the "United States has moved two HIMARS multiple rocket launchers from Jordan to the Al-Tanaf US special forces base."

That suggested that the equipment would be used for strikes against Syrian government forces, the statement added.

"Deploying any type of foreign weapons on Syrian territory... must be approved by the government of the sovereign country," it said.

"Forces of the US-led anti-IS coalition have repeatedly issued strikes on Syrian government forces fighting ISIS near the Jordanian border.

In Washington, a US Defense Department confirmed the deployment of the HIMARS system to the base, but did not say how many.

The HIMARS system, mounted on a lorry, fires GPS-guided rockets with a range of 70 kilometres (43 miles).

Another version of the system fires small GPS-guided missiles with a range of 300 kilometres, but it is not know which type has been deployed.

(London Telegraph)  -  Russian and US troops are patrolling neighbouring Syrian villages as the two countries move to defuse tensions between rival factions fighting the Islamic State in the Iraq and the Levant (Isil). 

In what is the closest encounter between the two superpowers in Syria to date, both sides have sent troops into the area around the northern town of Manbij to in a bid to halt fighting between the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and Turkish troops and allied rebel groups.

The Manbij Military Council, an SDF-affiliated group, said on Monday that the town had been placed under the protection of the US-backed coalition following several days of clashes with Turkish-backed Free Syrian Army. 

"They intensified their patrols and brought in armoured vehicles," Sharfan Darwish, a spokesman for the Manbij Military Council said.

Several US armoured vehicles flying the stars and stripes were seen patrolling Manbij and the surrounding countryside over the weekend, in what the Pentagon called an effort to “reassure” allies.

“Combined Joint Task Force Operation Inherent Resolve has taken this deliberate action to reassure Coalition members & partner forces, deter aggression and keep focus on defeating Isil,” Col. John Dorrian, a spokesman for Operation Inherent Resolve, said on Twitter.

Col Gen Sergei Rudskoi, a spokesman for the Russian general staff, confirmed on Friday that its commanders in Syria had negotiated an agreement for troops loyal to Damascus to take over several Kurdish controlled villages.

The moves puts US and Russian forces in their closest proximity to one another in the war in Syria to date. 

The SDF said on Monday that it had cut the main road between Raqqa and the eastern city Deir el-Zour, which is partially held by Isil.

Its troops, which are bolstered by 500 US special forces advisors, have advanced to within five miles of the northern edge of the city.

AMHERST, Mass. (FOX 25)  -  The Massachusetts National Guard and State Police reportedly joined forces to seize a single marijuana plant from an 81-year-old woman.

According to the Daily Hampshire Gazette, Margaret Holcomb had been growing the marijuana plant as a medicine. She reportedly used the marijuana to ease her arthritis and glaucoma and to help her sleep at night.

The paper reports that the plant had been growing on Holcomb's property in a raspberry patch. It was reportedly separated from her neighbors by a fence.

On September 21, a military-style helicopter and police arrived at Holcomb's home, entered her backyard and cut down the plant, the Daily Hampshire Gazette reports.

Holcomb was not home at the time, but her son and daughter were.The paper reports that Holcomb did not have a medical marijuana card. Police said the plant was in plain view.

Holcomb told the paper that she feels like her civil rights were violated and said she's ready to stand up in the case.

The bombing runs across Asia, Africa and the Middle East spotlighted the diffuse terrorist threats that have persisted into the final days of the Obama presidency — conflicts that the next president is now certain to inherit.

In Iraq and Syria, between Saturday and Monday, the United States conducted about 45 strikes against Islamic State targets. 

On the other side of the Mediterranean, in the Libyan city of Sirte, U.S. forces also hit fighters with the militant group. On Sunday in Yemen, a U.S. drone strike killed six suspected members of ­al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula. 

The following day, just across the Gulf of Aden in Somalia, the Pentagon targeted al-Shabab, another group aligned with ­al-Qaeda. The military also conducted several counterterrorism strikes over the weekend in Afghanistan, where the Taliban and the Islamic State are on the offensive.

Nowhere are the unexpected turns of Obama’s foreign-policy record more visible than in Iraq, where thousands of U.S. troops returned after the 2011 withdrawal to support local forces’ battle against the Islamic State. A smaller Special Operations force is based in northern Iraq, responsible for hunting down militant leaders.

U.S. warplanes conducted about 20 strikes in Iraq over the weekend . . . . In Syria over the weekend, more than 25 strikes.

Armed Troops Patrol Residential Streets in California

• Special note  -  These drills, fully funded by both parties in Congress, are designed to let the simpleminded locals know that the Feds are their rulers.

(Infowars News)  -  Video footage out of Ontario, California shows armed National Guard troops patrolling residential streets and practicing traffic control.

The video, which was shot this past weekend, features Guard troops marching in formation while chanting a military cadence. Troops also take turns to practice blocking traffic.

The troops, followed by a humvee, marched close to an elementary school and single family homes.

“I just watched it again and recognized the low block wall and the elementary school! It was right there where my sister and her husband live! OMG how frightening!” one YouTube commenter responded, while others insisted the patrols were a routine occurrence.

However, another respondent insisted that the patrol was not normal.

“During the last few seconds I got a quick glimpse of my sister and brother-in-laws house on Fuschia. Ave,” wrote the commenter.”That motorcycle was parked almost in front of their house. They told me they saw this procession going on from their front yard. They have lived in that house for 30 or so yrs and this is the first time they have seen this type of thing in their neighborhood. Might be a common thing to do their training someplace else but not in that area.”

Concerns about the presence of troops on American streets have heightened since the announcement of Jade Helm, an upcoming nationwide military exercise which some fear is a dry run for martial law.

 

As we reported earlier this week, a National Guard drill based around dealing with civil unrest after a dirty bomb attack in Richmond, California featured role players acting as angry Americans yelling ‘right-wing’ rhetoric.

Footage captured by a local shows Guard troops pushing irate citizens away with batons before one of the protest group states, “I’m a sovereign citizen, I refuse to recognize you guys, I refuse to recognize you.”

Disturbing video out of Fort Lauderdale, Florida last month also showed military and law enforcement practicing the internment of citizens during martial-law style training.

He had an unloaded antique 300-year-old flintlock pistol in his glove compartment, and he told a sheriff’s deputy about it.

That was his undoing.

Gordon van Gilder admits he may have run afoul of the law — but, “as a wise man once said, if that’s the law, the law is an ass.”

The retired teacher is facing a possible 10 years in prison — and the jeopardization of his pension — all because New Jersey state law classifies antique firearms the same way it classifies regular guns, meaning the state views van Gilder’s possession of an antique on par with him possessing a .44 Magnum.

The day after van Gilder told a deputy during a routine traffic stop about his antique gun, four law enforcement officers showed up at his house to arrest him.

Van Gilder said he’s fighting the felony gun possession charges, but the whole experience has soured his impression of the Garden State.

“Beware of New Jersey,” he told the National Rifle Association. “Don’t come here. Don’t live here.”
