Boston will remain a ‘sanctuary’ for illegal aliens for the foreseeable future as local officials “brace for impact” ahead of Donald Trump’s return to the White House.

The Boston City Council, which is composed exclusively of Democrats, voted 13-0 on Wednesday to reaffirm the Boston Trust Act, a 2014 law that was amended in 2019.

Under the city ordinance, Boston Police and other city departments are prohibited from enforcing federal immigration laws or sharing information with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), except “on matters of significant public safety importance such as combatting human trafficking, child exploitation, drug and weapons trafficking, and cybercrimes.”

City Council President Ruthzee Louijeune, the daughter of Haitian immigrants, introduced the resolution, which was met with overwhelming approval by fellow council members, the Boston Herald reports.

“As the national climate grows increasingly hostile towards immigrant populations, we must reaffirm who we are as a city, our leadership role in maintaining a positive and welcoming environment here with our immigrant communities,” Louijeune said at Wednesday’s meeting.

Councilor Gabriela Coletta Zapata echoed Louijeune’s sentiments, saying, “As we brace for impact, we’ve got to make sure that we all work together.”

Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker (Republican) announced another wave of restrictions taking effect prior to New Year’s, including a ban on gatherings over ten, with the restriction extending to “private homes.”

Baker announced the latest set of restrictions Tuesday, which will go into effect on Saturday, December 26 — the day after Christmas.

“We would like people to spend the next couple of weeks, between Christmas and sort of the week after New Year’s, as regularly as they possibly can just with those they live with,” Baker said.

The new restrictions revise capacity limits to ten people indoors and 25 outdoors, applying to both “private homes and event venues and public spaces,” per the order.

The order also limits restaurants to 25 percent of seating capacity. Similarly, places of worship, casinos, office spaces, retailers, libraries, arcades, gyms, museums, movie theaters, and close contact personal services will all be capped at 25 percent capacity as well.

According to Massachusetts Secretary of Health and Human Services Marylou Sudders, hospitals must postpone the bulk of elective surgeries as well.

Rioters Deface "Glory" Memorial to Black Soldiers

Rioters in Boston defaced the Shaw 54th Regiment Memorial to black soldiers in the Civil War as a “Black Lives Matter” protest moved through the city on Sunday.

The Boston Globe reported: “Memorials in three of the city’s major parks were hit with graffiti and vandalism Sunday night after tensions mounted between demonstrators and police following a day of mostly peaceful protest marches that wound through Boston.”

One of those memorials, the Globe noted, was the monument to the 54th: “One of the memorials targeted by vandals was the Robert Gould Shaw and the 54th Regiment Memorial, which was unveiled 137 years ago Sunday and depicts a pioneering group of Black soldiers marching into battle during the Civil War.”

A website dedicated to the memorial, which stands at the top of a hill on the Boston Common, explains:

The most acclaimed piece of sculpture on Boston Common is the Robert Gould Shaw and Massachusetts 54th Regiment Memorial by Augustus Saint-Gaudens; a memorial to that group of men who were among the first African Americans to fight in the Civil War. The monument portrays Shaw and his men marching down Beacon Street past the State House on May 28, 1863 as they left Boston on their way to South Carolina, Shaw erect on his horse, the men marching alongside.

The monument, which literally commemorates black lives dedicated (and sacrificed) to the struggle against slavery, was defaced with profane anti-police graffiti, as well as tributes to George Floyd, the African American man killed by police in Minneapolis, Minnesota, last week.

Judge rules Americans can secretly record public officials

(Washington Times)  -  A federal judge ruled Monday that Americans have a right to secretly record their public officials, including police, when they are engaged in their government duties.

U.S. District Chief Judge Patti B. Saris said a Massachusetts law banning secret recordings violates the First Amendment when it comes to government employees, rejecting the state’s claims that officials need some space to be able to operate without having to worry about being monitored.

“This is not to say that police and government officials have no privacy interests,” she wrote. “However, the diminished privacy interests of government officials performing their duties in public must be balanced by the First Amendment interest in newsgathering and information-dissemination.”

She ruled in favor of two sets of plaintiffs, one of which regularly livestreamed video of police officers performing their duties, and the other James O’Keefe, whose Project Veritas specializes in catching public policy figures saying embarrassing things.

Mr. O’Keefe called the ruling groundbreaking.

“The impact of this win will ripple throughout the nation. It will set historical precedent and keep citizen journalism alive in all fifty states,” he said in an email to supporters touting the case — and asking for money, because he predicted Massachusetts would appeal the ruling.

(Washington Times)  -  A Cherokee genealogist on Wednesday dismissed Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s claims of Indian ancestry as “ludicrous,” arguing that the Massachusetts Democrat “has no respect for true Native Americans.”

Twila Barnes, who has done extensive research into Ms. Warren’s family tree, added that the high-profile progressive leader has angered some Native Americans by appearing to leverage her dubious heritage to advance her career.

“Some just laugh, because it’s so ludicrous. I mean, you know, she has no proof of anything,” Ms. Barnes said on Fox’s “Tucker Carlson Tonight.”

“She’s a lawyer, and she’s supposed to understand you need proof, yet she keeps claiming,” said Ms. Barnes, whose research appears on the Thoughts from Polly’s Granddaughter website. “Many are angry because they feel like she’s appropriating an identity to gain something from that. And she has no respect for true Native Americans.”

Ms. Warren’s Cherokee heritage claims have dogged her during her 2018 re-election bid, thanks in large part to President Trump’s repeated referrals to the senator as “Pocahontas,” a nickname she has denounced as a “racial slur.”

The Berkshire (Mass.) Eagle, which endorsed her in 2012, called on her last week to take a DNA test to resolve the issue once and for all, while independent candidate Shiva Ayyadurai has sent her two DNA kits, both of which were returned.

Ms. Warren, who is not an enrolled member of any tribe, appeared on three Sunday news shows to retell the story of how her parents had to elope because her grandparents refused to let their son marry a woman of Delaware and Cherokee ancestry.

GOP Governor to Force Birth Control on Religious Based Employers

(Washington Examiner)  -  Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker (R) on Monday signed a bill that would mandate all employers cover birth control regardless of religious or moral objections, pushing back at rules that were activated at the federal level.

Baker, a Republican, said on Twitter Monday that his signing of the bill, which was passed along bipartisan lines in the legislature, would ensure "critical access to important contraceptive coverage." The law goes into effect immediately, but insurers have six months to implement changes.

The law in Massachusetts would run counter to federal regulations issued in October, in which the Trump administration rolled back an Obama-era rule that required employers to opt out of birth control coverage each year if they have religious objections. Preventive care for women is required under Obamacare, but the administration, through the Department of Health and Human Services, has discretion about what falls into that category.

If an employer does not have a religious or moral objection, the federal law allows for women to access a wide range of birth control, from intrauterine devices to birth control pills, without any cost to them. Some employers object to all types of birth control while others object specifically to IUDs and emergency contraception, which they liken to an abortion because their labels say they can prevent a fertilized egg from implantation.

(Boston Herald)  -  A local veterans’ advocacy group is blasting Massachusetts U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren and other state Democrats for their support of illegal immigrants, calling it “selfish political theater” and demanding they put veterans’ services at the top of their list — or feel the heat.

“We’d like to see our leaders re-examine their priorities, put this at the forefront — if we have to, we’ll knock on some doors in D.C.,” said John MacDonald of Veterans Assisting Veterans. “We need to take care of veterans first before we decide to take care of people who are illegally here.”

In a two-page open letter to “all Americans,” the group — which has funded all-terrain wheelchairs for local vets as well as horse therapy at Ironstone Farm in Andover — slams the “selfish blatant ignorance of the politicians that have chosen illegal immigrants over US Veterans” and calls for readers to support VAV’s cause.

The letter also targets U.S. Sen. Edward Markey, U.S. Reps. Michael Capuano and Seth Moulton — an Iraq war veteran — and Mayor Martin J. Walsh for failing to speak out about veteran homelessness and health care problems, specifically calling out Warren and her “misguided antics.”

“Senator Warren and others like her should know the difference between legal and illegal activity and chose instead to act out negatively in selfish political theater,” the letter reads. “Where’s your rally for US Veterans, Senator Warren?”

(Daily Caller)  -  Hampshire College in Massachusetts has announced that it will no longer fly the U.S. flag at all in response to an incident where the flag was taken down and burned. The president of the college says that by getting rid of the flag the school will be able to focus on other issues like halting Islamophobia and promoting gay rights.

The mess for Hampshire College started a week and a half ago, after Donald Trump’s victory in the U.S. presidential election. The school responded to Trump’s victory by keeping the U.S. flag at half-staff, as if in mourning, which upset some community members. 

Then, on the night before Veterans Day, somebody took the flag down and set it on fire. While the motive isn’t known, there have been many examples of students burning U.S. flags to protest Trump’s electoral victory.

While the flag was replaced in time for a Veterans Day commemoration, Hampshire College president Jonathan Lash has announced the school won’t be flying the flag at all anymore.

“We will not fly the U.S. flag or any other flags at Hampshire for the time being,” Lash said in a campus-wide email, according to Campus Reform.

While acknowledging that getting rid of the flag may be “especially painful” for military veterans and their family members, Lash said he hoped doing so would “enable us to instead focus our efforts on addressing racist, misogynistic, Islamophobic, anti-immigrant, anti-Semitic, and anti-LGBTQ rhetoric and behaviors.”

AMHERST, Mass. (FOX 25)  -  The Massachusetts National Guard and State Police reportedly joined forces to seize a single marijuana plant from an 81-year-old woman.

According to the Daily Hampshire Gazette, Margaret Holcomb had been growing the marijuana plant as a medicine. She reportedly used the marijuana to ease her arthritis and glaucoma and to help her sleep at night.

The paper reports that the plant had been growing on Holcomb's property in a raspberry patch. It was reportedly separated from her neighbors by a fence.

On September 21, a military-style helicopter and police arrived at Holcomb's home, entered her backyard and cut down the plant, the Daily Hampshire Gazette reports.

Holcomb was not home at the time, but her son and daughter were.The paper reports that Holcomb did not have a medical marijuana card. Police said the plant was in plain view.

Holcomb told the paper that she feels like her civil rights were violated and said she's ready to stand up in the case.

(RT News)  -  The Satanic Temple has conjured up a surprise for Massachusetts residents by setting up its international headquarters in a Salem house previously used to prepare dead bodies for burial.

The religious freedom campaign group hit headlines in recent months after launching ‘After School Satan’ clubs for children in the US and opening an Alaskan council meeting with a prayer to the Lord of Darkness.

Now the Satanic organization, which uses Lucifer as a symbol of rebellion, are taking their office of the occult to the city where 20 so-called sorcerers were put to death during the Salem Witch Trials in the late 1690s.

The headquarters will officially open at 64 Bridge Street, Salem, just 650 yards (600 meters) from a Catholic church and close to Carlton Innovation elementary school, on September 23. Built in 1882, the Victorian-era property was formerly a funeral home.

Residents have been “unsettled” by the news of the Satanic HQ, the Boston Herald reports. It’s due to act as an art gallery and a “witch-hunt” museum.

The building will also house a 7.5ft (2.3 meters) tall bronze statue of the group’s goat-headed deity, Baphomet. The winged-beast has been associated with the Knights Templar and also featured in Dan Brown’s religious mystery bestseller, the Da Vinci Code.

The Satanic Temple had previously attempted to have a statute of the cloven-hooved idol and pentagram displayed in public in Oklahoma City. They also pushed to position a statue of a Satanic idol on Capitol grounds in Little Rock, Arkansas - alongside a monument of the Ten Commandments.

Satanic Temple spokesperson Lucien Greaves claims the temple’s nerve center “isn’t an attack on anyone” and urged neighbors not to worry.

“Salem emerged as an obvious choice to be established as the base for our operations. In addition to Salem’s history and proximity to the intellectual hub of Boston, the people we have spoken to have been incredibly friendly and supportive,”Greaves said.

He added: “The irony that a town which once executed people because of alleged ties to Satan will now be hosting the headquarters of the world’s largest satanic organization is not lost on us.

“The fact that we have a home in Salem is testament to the progressive mentality of the people there, and the local government’s support for plurality.”

On its website, the group point out that they do not promote a belief “in a personal Satan” but instead are pushing to“embrace rational inquiry removed from supernaturalism and archaic tradition-based superstitions.”

Witch trials carried out in Salem between 1692-93 resulted in the execution of 20 people, 14 of whom were women. Many more people accused of dabbling in the dark arts died in prison. One man, Giles Corey, was crushed to death for refusing to participate at trial.

(Daily Caller)  -  Black men may have a legitimate reason to flee Boston police during investigatory or “Terry” stops, the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ruled Tuesday.

The court found that systemic racism in the Boston Police Department may be considered in conjunction with a suspect’s decision to flee from police during a stop.

A Terry stop, named for the U.S. Supreme Court case which sanctioned the practice, refers to a brief detention and search of an individual due to reasonable suspicion of criminal conduct.

In this case, a black male named Jimmy Warren was arrested in 2011 by Boston cops investigating a burglary on Hutchings Street near Franklin Park. The officers conducted a search of the Roxbury neighborhood near the crime scene with a vague and nonspecific description of the suspects — one was wearing dark clothing, one was wearing a black hoodie, and the other a red hoodie. Warren and an associate, both of whom who were wearing dark clothing, were approached by police and stopped in connection with their investigation of the burglary. Both men fled.

When apprehended by authorities shortly thereafter, police did not find any contraband on his person, but found an unlicensed .22 caliber firearm in an adjacent yard. Warren was arrested and convicted of unlawful possession of a gun.

Warren attempted to suppress the firearm and statements made after his arrest, arguing the stop was unlawful because police lacked reasonable suspicion (their clothing or bearing a general similarity to the description they had.) The state argued the fact Warren fled strengthens the officer’s reasonable suspicion analysis.

The Massachusetts supreme court rejected that argument, finding that, while the fact of flight is reasonably suspicious, a black male in Boston may have good reason to evade any encounter with police due to systemic racism in the city police department.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Seizing new fuel for his appeal to Donald Trump's critics, former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson has joined forces with another former Republican governor to strengthen his Libertarian presidential bid.

William Weld, who served two terms as the Republican governor of Massachusetts in the 1990s, will announce plans Thursday to seek the Libertarian Party's vice presidential nomination, Johnson confirmed in a Wednesday interview with the Associated Press. The pair met privately in Las Vegas over the weekend when Weld agreed to run as Johnson's running mate in the party's upcoming nominating convention and into the general election.

"We got together and shook hands on it," Johnson told the AP in an interview in Salt Lake City, where his underdog presidential campaign is based. "It brings an enormous amount of credibility to what it is I'm doing. I'm unbelievably flattered by this and humbled."

Johnson is casting himself as the best — and perhaps only — alternative to Trump, as the New York billionaire's Republican critics struggle to identify another third-party candidate.

Johnson earned just 1 percent of the national vote during his 2012 presidential run, but reminds reluctant conservatives that he'll likely be the only third-party candidate on the ballot in all 50 states this fall.

Weld, a well-respected former governor in the Northeast, offers Johnson some credibility and badly needed fundraising prowess. The 70-year-old will announce his vice presidential bid in New York on Thursday, Johnson said.

"He could be a huge influence when it comes to fundraising. Huge," said Johnson, whose campaign had only $35,000 in the bank at the end of March. "That was something that he in fact volunteered — that he enjoys doing it."

Weld was an active fundraiser for 2012 Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney. Like Johnson, Weld has a moderate view on social issues. He favors abortion rights and same-sex marriage. Years after leaving the governor's office in Massachusetts, Weld launched an unsuccessful bid for New York governor as a Republican and a Libertarian.
