New York City Mayor Eric Adams on Tuesday demanded the federal government help pay for what he said was a wave of asylum seekers pouring into the city, claiming its safety net was being strained by busloads of people coming from border states and elsewhere.
Adams’ comments echo those of Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, who took to national TV Sunday morning to say her city’s homeless shelters were filling up because of buses being sent en masse to the city from Texas and Arizona.
But as opposed to D.C., the problem in New York City is exacerbated by its “right to shelter” mandate, which means any homeless asylum seeker who comes to town, by any means, has to be put in a bed somewhere.
“Currently, New York City is experiencing a marked increase in the number of asylum seekers who are arriving from Latin America and other regions. In some instances, families are arriving on buses sent by the Texas and Arizona governments, while in other cases, it appears that individuals are being sent by the federal government,” Adams said in a statement, adding that more than 2,800 asylum seekers had entered the shelter system in recent weeks.

Russia is looking to complete an oil deal with Indian refiners using the United Arab Emirates' local currency, rather than in dollars, according to a Reuters report.
An invoice seen by Reuters revealed an Indian refiner was asked to pay for deliveries in dirhams, though the figure was first calculated in dollars. A payment in dirhams was made out to Gazprombank via Mashreq Bank, its corresponding bank in Dubai.
At least two Indian refiners have already settled some transactions using dirhams, and there are more to come soon as trading firms used by Rosneft only just started asking for payments in dirhams this month, the report added.
The moves signal Moscow is increasingly distancing itself from the US dollar as a way to minimize the impact of Western sanctions.
Saudi Arabia more than doubled Russian oil imports
The world's largest oil producer stepped up imports of Russian oil in the second quarter despite sanctions aimed at choking Moscow's energy flows, Reuters said.
Saudi Arabia imported 647,000 tonnes of Russian oil from April to June, according to data reviewed by Reuters. Saudi Arabia took possession of the oil from Russian and Estonian ports, and has thus far imported 320,000 more barrels from Russia compared to 2021 levels.
The imports also allow the Kingdom to free up their own oil exports to reap in profits from the record-high prices on the international market. Some of the Russian fuel made its way to Saudi Arabia through Egypt, accounting for some of the 110,000 barrels per day imported from Egypt in June. Meanwhile, Egypt imported 70,000 barrels per day from Russia in June, Reuters said.

(WND) - In response to a video in which Oprah Winfrey encourages white people to admit they are racist, radio legend Rush Limbaugh pummeled the popular black author and former television host.
"This country is defined by people who came from nothing, like she did," Limbaugh said on his national broadcast Wednesday.
"How in the world did she do it with so much white privilege and so much racism? Who in the world screwed up and let The Oprah become a billionaire? Which one of you white people made that mistake? Was it one of the King brothers who was her first syndicator? Who was it? Somebody really goofed up big time allowing The Oprah to become a billionaire. And not just a billionaire but one of the most powerful people in the country."
Limbaugh was reacting to Winfrey's discussion with NFL linebacker Emmanuel Acho on a recent episode of "The Oprah Conversation," as several white guests admitted their racism.
Winfrey said, "There are white people who are not as powerful as the system of white people – the caste system that's been put in place – but they still, no matter where they are on the rung, or the ladder of success, they still have their whiteness."
"[Whites have a] leg up," she maintained. "You still have your whiteness. That's what the term 'white privilege' is. It means that whiteness still gives you an advantage, no matter. It is the fundamental issue."

Mandatory masks statewide demands Democrat Governor
Gov. Inslee (D - Washington) announced Tuesday that face coverings will be mandatory statewide, issuing an order that takes effect Friday, June 26.
“We need to remain vigilant, diligent, and resourceful,” to stop this virus, Inslee said.
Unfortunately, the governor reported, there has been an uptick of cases in Washington state as businesses and public places start to reopen.
Inslee noted that Washingtonians were committed and disciplined when businesses had to be shut down early in the pandemic response to maintain social distancing. As we have reopened our economy, the same social distancing strategy is not as available to us, the governor said. As a result, cases are rising, as is the number of people that one person infects.

President Donald Trump’s deputies announced Friday that they had begun the process of importing 85,000 H-1B gig workers to take white-collar jobs that will be needed after October by the millions of American graduates who are now losing jobs in the coronavirus crash.
“This is just an unspeakable action,” said Marie Larson,a co-founder of the American Workers Coalition, which opposes the many visa worker programs that have transferred at least one million white-collar jobs to foreign workers. “I don’t believe President Trump ordered this — the swamp went ahead with this,” she said.
“If the H-1B program is just for filling jobs that Americans cannot fill amid for labor shortages, then this would not be happening,” said John Miano, a lawyer with the Immigration Law Reform Institute. “But it is not a labor-shortage program — it is a cheap labor program to displace Americans,” he said.
The 2020 lottery “is in your face that that is the purpose of the program.”
The agency announced Friday that it had received enough corporate requests to snatch up all of the 2020 supply of H-1B visas.
This annual supply includes 20,000 visas for foreigners who pay for graduate degrees at American colleges, plus 65,000 visas for graduates who are directly imported from India, China, and other countries. Non-profits — such as hospitals and universities — are allowed to also import an unlimited number of “cap-exempt” H-1Bs for white-collar jobs.
Roughly 100,000 new H-1B workers arrive each year. But they are allowed to stay for many years, so companies have gradually built up a resident workforce of roughly 900,000 H-1B workers, alongside several hundred thousand additional white-collar workers carrying L-1, OPT, CPT, E-3, B-1, TN, H4EAD documents.

(WAFB) - The Louisiana National Guard says it has not been tasked with breaking up large gatherings in the state, including at churches.
The statement comes on the heels of a pastor of a Louisiana church defying government orders by welcoming in hundreds of people into his church service Tuesday evening (March 17).
The gathering directly defied an order by Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards that bans groups larger than 50 from gathering at any one time, including in churches. President Donald Trump has recommended no groups larger than 10.
The pastor, Rev. Tony Spell, says police showed up at the church after the service telling him the National Guard would break up any future gatherings that exceed 50 people.
However, Louisiana National Guard Colonel Ed Bush said Wednesday that is not accurate.
“The National Guard has not been tasked with enforcing any of the curfew, social distancing or meeting requirements as set by the governor,” Colonel Bush said. “Our focus right now is completely with helping state agencies with preparedness and medical readiness,” Bush added.

(Wall Street Journal) - Legislation that would allow news publishers to team up on negotiations with tech giants such as Alphabet Inc.’s, Google and Facebook Inc. didn’t advance very far in the last Congress.
Now, its backers are hoping the latest version, which is expected to be introduced Wednesday, will gain momentum in a Democratic-controlled House and draw bipartisan support.
The Journalism Competition and Preservation Act is sponsored by Rep. David Cicilline (D., R.I.), chairman of the House antitrust subcommittee, and Rep. Doug Collins (R., Ga.).
News publishers have struggled to make money on digital ads, partly because of the dominance of Facebook and Google. Antitrust law bars the news companies from working together in negotiations with the tech platforms.
The bill would give publishers a 48-month safe harbor from those rules, during which they would be free to work together to push their case on issues from revenue splits to data-sharing to content-licensing.
Mr. Cicilline said the urgency for such a measure was increasing.
“Local media and local publishers are really on life support,” he said, pointing to news-industry data showing that publishers have lost more than $30 billion in ad revenue since 2006 while Facebook and Google made more than $60 billion in ad revenue just last year alone.
“You can see that because of their dominance in the marketplace, they are generating most of the revenue.”
People familiar with Facebook’s thinking say that an antitrust exemption for publishers would likely harm consumers and fail to help the solve the business model problems that it is intending to help fix. A spokesman from Google declined to comment.

On Sunday, the Democratic governor of Colorado, Jared Polis, stated that he would sign a bill allowing his state to circumvent the Electoral College, giving his state’s electoral votes to whomever won the national popular vote, thus allowing population heavy areas to determine the presidential election.Polis told The Hill that he viewed the Electoral College as an “undemocratic relic,” adding, “I’ve long supported electing the president by who gets the most votes. It’s a way to move towards direct election of the president.”If states whose electoral count totals 270 votes vote similar to the proposed Colorado bill, then they would combine their electoral votes and award them to the national popular vote winner, thus making that candidate the president. Currently, the number of electoral votes totaled in favor of such a position total 172, including 12 blue states and the District of Columbia. 11 more states have bills in their legislature similar to Colorado’s; their combined 89 electoral votes would put the proposal over the top.John Koza, who chairs National Popular Vote, claimed, “Under a national popular vote, the 38 nonbattleground states long ignored by presidential campaigns will be powerful again, because no candidate can win 270 electoral votes and the White House without also winning the popular vote across all 50 states and the District of Columbia.”

Feds spend $1.5 million studying sleeping Mexican Americans

(Washington Free Beacon) - The National Institutes of Health is spending roughly $1.5 million on a study of the sleep habits of Mexican Americans living along the U.S. border.
The "border health" study began last year and is being conducted by the University of Arizona.
The study is recruiting 1,100 people in the tiny border town of Nogales, Ariz., to see how well they sleep. Researchers claim Mexican Americans do not sleep as well as their peers, blaming "social" factors at the border.
"Disparities in sleep health in racial/ethnic minorities exist, including Mexican Americans. In particular, social-environmental factors at the U.S.-Mexico border may play an important role in sleep health disparities," according to the grant for the study.
The project aims to help Mexican Americans sleep "through a community partnership."
"This project will not only allow for increased understanding of the complex relationship among sleep, health, and social-environmental pressures, but through a community partnership it can maximize our ability to reduce these disparities," the grant states. "Also, this project has the added benefit of providing information about the role of sleep as a potentially modifiable factor in cardiovascular disease and diabetes disparities as well."
Researchers will study how long this population sleeps, as well as their rates of sleep apnea and insomnia, which they believe are caused by "social-behavioral factors."
Researchers hypothesize assimilation could be causing Mexican Americans to lose sleep, according to the grant.
"Second, this study aims to examine the role of sleep and cardiometabolic disease risk in this population and explore the role of acculturation, psychosocial stress, economic hardship, and/or unhealthy behaviors in these associations," the grant states.
The project has received $1,489,703 from taxpayers so far. Research will continue through November 2022
Taxpayers are also funding a $333,210 study of bars along the U.S.-Mexico border, bringing the total tab to $1.8 million for federal assessments of sleep and the amount of dancing at clubs along the Southern border.

The editors of the New York Review of Books published Jayapal’s corporatist demand for more visa workers on December 3 under the headline: “A New Moral Imagination on Immigration.” She wrote:
The number of visas for nonagricultural workers (such as construction workers, housekeepers, or forest workers) is stuck at the 1990 level of 66,000 visas—even though our economy requires millions.
In reality, the resident population of blue-collar and white-collar visa-workers – H2Bs, H-2As, H-1Bs, L-1s, OPTs, etc. — routinely exceeds two million.
Jayapal also urged that immigration policies should meet the needs of employers, not employees, writing that “our immigration system should be updated regularly to prioritize certain industries that are seeing rapid growth and need workers.”
Jayapal’s demand for more government-controlled foreign labor spotlights the growing corporatist alliance between elite progressives, establishment Democrats, CEOs, and Wall Street investors — and it helps to explain why ordinary Americans favored pro-American Donald Trump for the White House.
Jayapal also favors the easy immigration of unskilled migrants, as well as of aging migrants who cannot work but who will likely rely on taxpayer aid, such as Medicare:
