In shadow of Paris, first Australian Muslim party launched

Welcome to the "new" Australia

  • First party for Australian Muslims surfaces days after ISIS attacks, and even as first of 12,000 Syrian "migrants" land Down Under.

(Israel National News)  -  The first Muslim party in Australia was launched on Tuesday, with questionable timing given the Islamic State (ISIS) attacks by Muslim terrorists in Paris on Saturday that left at least 129 people murdered.

The Australian Muslim Party will take part in the next federal election, and its founder Diaa Mohamed told Fairfax amid the launching in Sydney that the group intends to provide a "louder voice" for Muslims.

"There are a lot of parties out there to specifically oppose Islam and Muslims, yet Muslims don't have any official representation," he said, referencing a number of parties critical of the designs of Islam, including one - the Australian Liberty Alliance - that is backed by Dutch MP Geert Wilders.

Raising further questions regarding the timing of the launch is the fact that the Australian government on Monday announced the first of a planned 12,000 Syrian migrants would be landing in the country within the next 24 hours to be resettled.

That move was met with criticism given that at least one of the terrorists in the Paris attacks apparently entered Europe via Greece as a Syrian "refugee."

But while a major influx of Muslim migrants may change its fortunes, for now the Australian Muslim Party has very low chances of winning even a single senate seat, given that the highest proportion of Muslims in any parliamentary constituency is just over 20%, reports BBC.

Mohamed, a 34-year-old businessman, recognized that launching the party in the aftermath of the Paris attacks has a questionable aspect to it.

"There are going to be a lot of questions raised in the coming days of the events recently, and this is the whole reason we created this party," he said on ABC's AM program. "So it is as good a time as any to launch it."

Even while condemning the Paris attacks, he said his party would never support a military invasion in a Muslim country as response to the terrorism emanating from the Middle East.
