Obama thrusts U.S. Navy ships into the Black Sea - Why?

USS Taylor in the Black Sea

Boys and their Toys
  • Obama puts U.S. navy ships into the Black Sea to confront Russia in some fashion or other.  It is like striking a match near gasoline.  Obama already has our troops on the Jordanian border with Syria.  Is Obama putting our military in harms way hoping someone will shoot at them?

Turkey has allowed a U.S. warship to pass through the Bosphorus Strait in the next two days amid a growing tension between Russia and Western countries over Crimea, local Daily News reported Wednesday.

A Turkish diplomatic source confirmed that a U.S. warship had got permission to pass the strait, but it would not be a nuclear aircraft carrier as suggested in some media. The U.S warship meets the standards specified by the 1936 Montreux Convention in terms of weight, the source added.

USS Mount Whitney

According to the Montreux Convention, the total weight of military ships of the non-littoral states to pass through the Bosphorus Strait cannot exceed 45,000 tons.

Earlier Tuesday, two Russian warships passed through the Turkish strait of Bosphorus, heading toward Ukraine.

Tass reported that the guided-missile frigate USS Taylor, one of two Navy ships assigned to the Black Sea during the Sochi Winter Olympics was still in the Turkish Black Sea port of Samsun. The frigate was deployed on February 5 along with the amphibious command ship, USS Mount Whitney.

According to the Montreux Convention, warships of countries which do not border the Black Sea cannot remain in the waters for longer than 21 days. While the USS Mount Whitney left on February 25, the USS Taylor remained at the Turkish port, ostensibly for repairs after running aground on February 12.

Europe in 1812
Russia has ruled the Crimea and the Ukraine for centuries.  Somehow during that period the sun always managed to come up, children went to school, folks went to work and the world went on.
.
Sure it would be nice for the Ukraine to be independent.  But honestly, I will sleep solidly tonight no matter what flag flies over Sevastopol.

Nothing has changed.
Yellow journalism.  Nothing has changed since the media driven and created Spanish-American War.  Big media needs to make money.  Lots and lots of money.  Stories are run in an endless 24 hour loop to make you scared to death of hot dogs, terrorism, beer, cell phones or evil foreigners.
.
Foreigners are a favorite with their "strange ways" and funny looks.  They are always painted by the media and politicians as evil and bloodthirsty beasts.  Just let the government go to war with them and then you will be safe.
