The Chinese dissident who served 10 years after being convicted of "state subversion" on evidence provided by the American Internet giant Yahoo is under sharp restrictions, his wife said, after he was released and returned home.
The dissident, Wang Xiaoning, 62, was released from the Beijing No. 2 prison. Just after 2 a.m., he was taken to a local police station and told that he was not to speak the news media, not to participate in any protests or demonstrations, and not to give any speeches, and that he would be closely monitored, his wife, Yu Ling, said in a telephone interview.
“This was not a condition of his release, but he was told to follow these rules,” she said.

Wang Xiaoning is originally from China’s northeast Liaoning province, and used to be an engineer in China’s enormous weapons industry. Wang had a long history of pro-democracy activity and protest against China’s single-party state: He was detained by authorities in the crackdown following the 1989 massacre of protesters in Tiananmen Square, and for years was viewed by Chinese authorities as a subversive figure promoting disunity.
Nonetheless, Wang continued to advocate for a multi-party system in China, and played a significant role in founding a fledgling political party — the China Third Way Party, a reference to China’s official “One country, two systems” policy. Former Chinese leader Deng Xoaoping advocated this stance in regard to incorporating capitalist regions like Macau, Hong Kong, and even Taiwan.
Wang, a former engineer, distributed pro-democracy writings using e-mail and Yahoo forums, often anonymously. He was detained on Sept. 1, 2002, and convicted of “inciting subversion of state power” using information the Chinese authorities received from Yahoo.

Around the same time, Shi Tao, a Chinese journalist, was convicted of providing state secrets to overseas entities also based on evidence provided by Yahoo’s subsidiary in Hong Kong. He is still in prison.

Yahoo eventually apologized for its role in the case and settled a lawsuit brought by the families of several Chinese activists, paying an undisclosed amount of compensation. (New York Times)

The data connected the messages with Wang Xiaoning’s computer and identified Wang Xiaoning as the owner of the Yahoo account used to disseminate pro-democracy materials and a “large” number of email messages. . Yahoo China also turned over information regarding activists Jiang Lijun (arrested in 2002 and sentenced to four years) and Li Zhi (arrested in 2003 and sentenced to eight years). In 2004, Yahoo Hong Kong gave Chinese authorities identifying information for the journalist Shi Tao, who had used his personal Yahoo email account to describe an order from Chinese authorities that news media not report anything having to do with the 15th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre, the Falun Gong movement, or any calls for political change.

When Yahoo turned over the information, Chinese authorities arrested Shi Tao and seized his computer. Unlike Wang Xiaoning, Shi Tao was accused of revealing state secrets; however, like Wang Xiaoning, he was also sentenced to 10 years in prison, to be followed by a two-year suspension of political rights.
Yahoo’s Hong Kong subsidiary never asked why the Chinese government wanted the information about its users, nor did it question the legality of the demands, despite the fact it had good reason to know why the Chinese government was requesting the information. Yahoo simply handed it over. These actions — or lack of action — led to organizations like Reporters Without Borders accusing Yahoo of effectively working as a police informant.
It’s worth noting that Yahoo is hardly alone: Google and Microsoft (through its MSN service) have also been accused of providing information to Chinese authorities that has been used to bring charges against pro-democracy activists.
Yahoo reached a financial settlement with both families. The terms of the agreement have not been disclosed.

One of the pillars of the international troop drawdown is for allied forces to hand over responsibility for the country’s security to Afghans by the end of 2014.
Lt. Col. John Harrell, a spokesman for U.S. special operations forces in Afghanistan, said the pause in training affects about 1,000 trainees of the Afghan Local Police (ALP), a militia backed by the government in Kabul.
“The training of the ALP recruits has been paused while we go through this re-vetting process, to take a look at this process to see if there’s anything that we can improve,” Harrell said. “It may take a month, it may take two months, we don’t know.” . (Hurriyet Daily News)

Naked Chinese Man Brings Traffic to a Halt
In any other scenario, these police officers

attention happens to be completely naked and has just thrown rush-hour traffic
into chaos by jumping onto moving vehicles.
The suspect arrived on scene in the Chinese
city of Hefei dressed in his boxer shorts and very soon began clambering onto bonnets, thumping on
the sides of vehicles and even licking windscreens.
Soon after, he stripped off his underwear
and jumped onto a taxi before laying down on the road in front of
traffic.
When police arrived on scene, the deranged man
stood to attention, saluted their car and performed a some kind of dance as

Man who assaulted wife with ostrich egg jailed for six months
A New Zealand man is jailed who assaulted his wife with an ostrich egg after her pet
pig ran amok.
Phillip Russell lost his temper when he discovered the pig had damaged his
power saw, verbally abusing his wife, spitting at her then grabbing an ostrich
egg from the kitchen table and hurling it at her, Fairfax Media reported.
It said Russell, 46, had repeatedly asked his wife to keep the pet pig under
control as it had damaged their home, a neighbour's house and council property,
but she insisted it should be given free range.
The ostrich egg, the largest type of egg produced by any living bird species,
caused bruising to the chest of Russell's wife, the report said.
It said Russell pleaded guilty to charges including assault using an ostrich
egg as a weapon over the July 5 incident and was sentenced to six months jail in
Hastings District Court.
At an earlier court hearing, Russell's defence lawyer said his client, who
has a record of domestic violence, had expected his wife to catch the egg.
The report did not explain why Russell had an ostrich egg, a species that is not

A Maine man found himself in deep doo-doo after allegedly going on a tear at a local disc golf course — before he was apprehended by cops.
That's because they found him in the bottom of a port-a-potty.
When police at Enman Disc Golf in Brunswick in response to complaints that a naked man had been rolling in the mud, overturning trash cans and sitting in the disc goals, the suspect was nowhere to be found, The Times Record reported.
For a while, a backpack full of clothes was all they could trace — until they spotted him in the bottom of the portable toilet, according to the Times Record.
The 29-year-old didn't respond to cops' commands, the deputy police chief said, but eventually cops fished him out, sprayed him down and cuffed him. (NBC News Connecticut)
A MAN has been dubbed the "Porta-Potty Peeper" after he hid in the tank of a portable toilet.
"I was at the yoga festival, doing a little bit of yoga, and I’m just seeing all these goddesses," Luke Chrisco, who said he is a voyeur and not a rapist, told FOX31 Denver. "It seems crazy, but I just felt like I was being blessed by their energy, even though it was unintentional."
Chrisco, 30, added the idea of waiting in a tank of waste and urine to spy on women at the yoga festival in Boulder, Colorado, didn’t bother him.
"There’s bacteria in there, but to me it’s just normal ... we all have bodily fluids,” he said. “It seems terrible, but it didn’t actually smell that bad or anything. I still would have done it even if it smelled a little weird, because where there is muck, there is gold."
Police believe Chrisco has spied on at least 200 women in Boulder and hundreds more across the US and Europe.
"I am like a hunter, a man watching a bird, " said Chrisco, who was arrested in Vail for hdiing in the portable toilet in Boulder.
"I’ll be honest, it was a lifestyle that I was living," Chrisco said, "just by choice trying to find my private way to exercise my spiritual beliefs. I made a vow to myself...that I never wanted to frighten any girl. I would rather put a gun to my head than scare anyone or hurt anyone. That’s how I live my life." (Daily Telegraph)

British firefighters say they saved an apartment from destruction after its domestically challenged resident tried to dry his wet socks and underwear in a microwave oven.
The Dorset Fire and Rescue Service says firefighters rescued the man from his home and extinguished the kitchen blaze Monday.
The fire destroyed the appliance along with the two pairs of underwear and socks inside it, and caused smoke damage to the apartment in Weymouth, a town on England’s southwest coast.(The Gazette)

US trade sanctions have led game
maker Blizzard to cut off access to World of Warcraft (Wow) in Iran.
Blizzard posted a statement to its player-forum site after hundreds of
Iranian players said they had lost access to the game. Access was lost recently, it said, because it had "tightened up its
procedures" to comply with sanctions.
The problem for Iranians came to light late last week as hundreds of players
in the country posted messages to Blizzard's European Battle.net forums
complaining they could no longer access the game reports BBC News.
Many of those posting messages said they could not connect directly to World
of Warcraft but could get access when they used a proxy server outside Iran.

The outpouring of complaints led Blizzard to post a
statement explaining what had happened.
The statement said US economic sanctions and trade restrictions meant it
could not do business with people living in certain nations. One of which was

"This week, Blizzard tightened up its procedures to ensure compliance with
these laws, and players connecting from the affected nations are restricted from
access to Blizzard games and services," read the statement.
Unfortunately, said Blizzard, the same sanctions meant it could not give
refunds to players in Iran or help them move their account elsewhere.
"We apologise for any inconvenience this causes and will happily lift these
restrictions as soon as US law allows," it added.
Players of Wow and other games, including Guild Wars, said when they had
tried to log in they had been redirected to a page saying the connection had
been blocked because the games promoted "superstition and mythology".
Blizzard said it had no information about Iranian government action against
online games.

The President of Guatemala says the Drug War has failed.
But the US is spending hundreds of millions in the area and is sending in troops.
GUATEMALA CITY - The US Marines have now been put on the front lines of the insane, pointless and bottomless spending pit of the so-called War on Drugs.
A team of 200 U.S. Marines began patrolling Guatemala's western coast this week in an unprecedented operation to beat drug traffickers in the Central America region, a U.S. military spokesman said.
The Marines are deployed as part of Operation Martillo, a broader effort started last Jan. 15 to stop drug trafficking along the Central American coast. Focused exclusively on drug dealers in airplanes or boats, the U.S.-led operation involves troops or law enforcement agents from Belize, Britain, Canada, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, France, Guatemala, Honduras, the Netherlands, Nicaragua, Panama and Spain reports the Associated Press
"This is the first Marine deployment that directly supports countering transnational crime in this area, and it's certainly the largest footprint we've had in that area in quite some time," said Marine Staff Sgt. Earnest Barnes at the U.S. Southern Command in Miami.
Guatemalan president says drug war has failed
It was 50 years ago when the U.S. military last sent any significant aid and equipment into Guatemala, establishing a base to support counter-insurgency efforts during a guerrilla uprising. That movement led to 36 years of war that left 200,000 dead, mostly indigent Maya farmers. The U.S. pulled out in 1978.
Guatemalan authorities say they signed a treaty allowing the U.S. military to conduct the operations on July 16. Less than a month later an Air Force C-5 transport plane flew into Guatemala City from North Carolina loaded with the Marines and four UH-1 "Huey" helicopters.
After two weeks of setting up camp, establishing computer connections and training at the Guatemalan air base at Retalhuleu, the Marines ran through rehearsal exercises, Barnes said. Last week, their commander "gave us the thumbs up" to begin active operations, he said.
This week the Marines have been patrolling waterways and the coastline, looking for fast power boats and self-propelled "narco-submarines" used to smuggle drugs along Central America's Pacific Coast. U.S. officials say the "drug subs" can carry up to 11 tons of illegal cargo up to 5,000 miles.
Col. Erick Escobedo, spokesman for Guatemalan Military Forces and Defence Ministry, said that so far the Marines have brought about the seizure of one small-engine aircraft and a car, but made no arrests. He said he expected the Marines to in Guatemala for about two months.
Drug Enforcement Administration special agent Jeffrey Todd Scott said that although the agency has supported Operation Martillo, it has no agents working in Guatemala beyond its normal in-country presence. But he does not bother to explain what the "normal" in-country presence is.

A Christian girl with Down's Syndrome arrested in Pakistan for allegedly
burning the Koran appeared in court on Friday to be remanded in prison for a
further two weeks.
Rimsha Misah, whose parents say she is 11 and was born with Down’s syndrome,
has already been held for a fortnight in a case that has exposed the country’s
harsh blasphemy laws to international condemnation.
She appeared before a district court in Islamabad on Friday morning, her tiny
frame hidden beneath a white sheet to protect her identity amid growing fears
for safety reports the UK Telegraph.
Her lawyer, Tahir Naveed Chaudhry, said he hoped she would be freed on bail
on Saturday.
Christian girl arrested for blasphemy in Pakistan
An 11-year-old Christian Pakistani girl could face the death penalty under the country's notorious blasphemy laws.
The judge is due to decide whether to free her and is considering a medical
report that concluded Rimsha was 14, but had a mental age considerably lower and
should be treated as a minor.
Christian activist Xavier William said he visited Masih at a police station where she was first held, and then this week in prison.
“She was frightened and traumatised,” William told Reuters.
“She was assaulted and in very bad shape. She had bruises on her face and on her hands,” he added, referring to an attack by a mob in her village on the edge of Islamabad after she was accused of blasphemy.
Xavier William, president of Life for All, said Adiala prison, home to many
of Pakistan’s most dangerous criminals,
was no place for a vulnerable young girl.
“She is a minor, not an adult, and is being treated as a criminal,” he said.
“We condemn today’s decision and are seeking meetings with the Interior Ministry
to stop this now.”
