I have decided to try and start each new week off on a positive high note. But being a glass half empty kind of guy I suspect things will turn into crap soon enough.

But none is more satisfying than this 1936 production, widely accepted as the best and most faithful of three screen versions.

Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States for remembering the people who died while serving in the country's armed forces. The holiday, which is observed every year on the last Monday of May, originated as Decoration Day after the American Civil War in 1868, when the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of Union veterans founded in Decatur, Illinois, established it as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the Union war dead with flowers.
By the 20th century, competing Union and Confederate holiday traditions, celebrated on different days, had merged, and Memorial Day eventually extended to honor all Americans who died while in the military service. It typically marks the start of the summer vacation season, while Labor Day marks its end.
The first widely publicized observance of a Memorial Day-type observance after the Civil War was in Charleston, South Carolina, on May 1, 1865. During the war, Union soldiers who were prisoners of war had been held at the Hampton Park Race Course in Charleston; at least 257 Union prisoners died there and were hastily buried in unmarked graves.
Together with teachers and missionaries, black residents of Charleston organized a May Day ceremony in 1865, which was covered by the New York Tribune and other national papers. The freedmen cleaned up and landscaped the burial ground, building an enclosure and an arch labeled "Martyrs of the Race Course". Nearly 10,000 people, mostly freedmen, gathered on May 1 to commemorate the war dead. Involved were about 3,000 school children, newly enrolled in freedmen's schools, as well as mutual aid societies, Union troops, black ministers and white northern missionaries. Most brought flowers to lay on the burial field.

This was the first Memorial Day. African Americans invented Memorial Day in Charleston, South Carolina. What you have there is black Americans recently freed from slavery announcing to the world with their flowers, their feet, and their songs what the war had been about. What they basically were creating was the Independence Day of a Second American Revolution.
General Logan proclaimed the first "Decoration Day" to honor the fallen soldiers of the American Civil War.
He served the state of Illinois as a State Senator, a Congressman, a U.S. Senator and was an unsuccessful candidate for Vice President of the United States with James G. Blaine in the election of 1884.

Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) president Stacy Davis Gates said on Monday that “all children belong to” the union.
At the City Club Chicago event, Gates bashed President Donald Trump for lessening the power of teachers’ unions, calling his education agenda a “relitigation” of the Civil War while complaining about the failing state of Chicago schools.
Quoting civil rights activist James Baldwin, Gates tells the crowd, “The children are always ours. Every single one of them, all over the globe.” Gates then mocks parents who would respond by saying “CTU thinks your children are its children.”
“Yes, we do,” Gates said. “We do.”
CTU did not respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.

The US State Department sent out a letter this week approving displays of the Black Lives Matter flag this Tuesday on the Anniversary of George Floyd’s death in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
A source within the Biden State Department wishing to remain anonymous has shared with Human Events News a document that indicates that all U.S. “Diplomatic and Consular posts” are being encouraged to display shows of support for Black Lives Matter on Tuesday, May 25, the one-year anniversary of George Floyd’s death.
The memo reads in part, “The Department supports the use of the term ‘Black Lives Matter’ in messaging content, speeches, and other diplomatic engagements with foreign audiences to advance racial equity and access to justice on May 25 and beyond (italics added) We encourage posts to focus on the need to eliminate systemic racism and its continued impact.”
The memo, which is in part a woke statement on social justice, part an apology for U.S. actions, and part an endorsement of all BLM materials, expressly encourages the display of the BLM flag or banner at U.S. facilities (except on the actual flagpole that holds the American flag).

(National File) - Democrat officials in Michigan ordered the entire floor to rise to their feet and remain standing for a “black national anthem” during Monday’s ceremony to confirm the votes of sixteen Democrat electors for Democrat presidential and vice-presidential hopefuls Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.
Attendees were ordered to “please remain standing for the National Anthem and the “black national anthem” by the Turner Sisters, Jeliah and Jemilah Turner.”
The official proceedings were then halted for a melancholy rendition of “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” which was declared to be the “Negro National Anthem” by the National Association of Colored People in 1919.
The United States government does officially recognize any “black national anthem,” as the only federally recognized national anthem is “The Star-Spangled Banner.”
It remains unclear what would have transpired if attendees had not dutifully risen for the “black national anthem,” as all present Democrat electors sprang to their feet for the song.
In a vicious racist act Democrats ban Hispanic-Americans, Asian-Americans, Arab-American and European-Americans from the fund.
The Democrat run state of Oregon has opened applications for a coronavirus relief fund specifically for the “black community.” The Oregon Cares Fund is a $62 million fund set aside from the federal CARES Act and is intended only for black individuals and black-owned entites. “The Oregon Cares Fund is a targeted investment in the Black community from the CARES Act Coronavirus Relief Fund,” the fund website states. “This fund is meant to provide the Black community with the resources it needs to weather the global health pandemic and consequent recession. The Oregon Cares Fund is for Black people, Black-owned businesses, and Black community based organizations.” The application period opened on Monday and all funds must be distributed by Dec. 30, according to the Portland Business Journal. “This is a historic first step to address the disparities facing Black Oregonians in the face of Covid-19,” State Rep. Akasha Lawrence Spence (D-Portland) said in a statement. “Oregon has underinvested in its Black citizens for far too long.” NewsWars.com

(WND) - Already, a poll has found that many black voters are less likely to vote for Joe Biden because he picked Kamala Harris, and now it may get worse, with the revelation Harris is the descendant of a prominent slaveowner, said talk-radio host Rush Limbaugh on Monday. "Folks, there’s no denying this. Her family were big slave owners. Five slave plantations, 200 slaves. The family wealth was created by virtue of these plantations. So the Democrats are out there ripping down all these founders. They owned slaves. Now they’re gonna put somebody in the Oval Orifice who owned slaves, or whose family did," Limbaugh said. He cited author and filmmaker Dinesh D'Souza's discovery that Harris' father, Donald, a Stanford professor, wrote an article in a Jamaican magazine several years ago boasting that he was descended from one of Jamaica's largest slaveowners, Hamilton Brown. D'Souza asked in a tweet Monday what Democrats should do about that fact, in light of the statues of George Washington being pulled down by left-wing activists because he owned slaves. Harris, he said, is the "direct descendant and beneficiary" of a slave and plantation owner. "The privilege Kamala Harris has enjoyed throughout her life was built on the backs of 200 black slaves, forced to work on 5 plantations by her ancestor Hamilton Brown. Over 180,000 African-American men served as soldiers in the Civil War. These soldiers served in all black regiments that later came to be known as the United States Colored Troops. . If we are going to play the reperations game then I have a modest proposal. Let's have the families of ex-slaves pay reparations to the families of the Black Union troops who liberated them. Former President Grant acidly remarked that the anti-labor wing of the Republicans were the same people who had resisted using federal troops “to protect the lives of negroes. Now, however, there is no hesitation about exhausting the whole power of the government to suppress a strike on the slightest intimation that danger threatens.”

(Free Beacon) - A Rhode Island donut shop announced it will end its military and police discounts after a Providence firefighter reported being racially profiled by two police officers. "We're fed up. Until local police takes [sic] action to solve problems with racism & injustice, @alliesdonuts will choose to stand with the people of our great state," the store wrote Saturday on Instagram. "We will no longer offer military or police discounts. Thank you for your service, and shame on you for your silence." The store said the profiling incident was "an example of terrible job performance" and that the officers would not face any consequences. FreeBeacon.com
