Women caned for having Lesbian Sex

(Daily Mail)  -  Two Malaysian women have been caned after an Islamic law court convicted them of having lesbian sex, despite an outcry from activists at the 'cruel and unjust' punishment. 

The women, aged 22 and 32, were arrested in April after they were found in a car in a public square in northern Terengganu state, one of the country's most conservative areas.

The pair, whose identities have not been revealed, pleaded guilty to breaking Islamic laws and were sentenced to six strokes of the cane each and a fine of 3,300 ringgit (£620).

The case has sparked widespread condemnation and focused attention on what rights groups say is a deteriorating climate for the gay community in the Muslim-majority country.

Campaigners said it was the first time that women in Malaysia have been caned for violating a sharia regulation which forbids same-sex relations.

The two women were caned at the Sharia High Court in Kuala Terengganu, state capital of Terengganu, a court official confirmed to AFP.

Beer Festival banned by Islamists

(Reuters) - Malaysian authorities scrapped an annual beer festival on Monday after an Islamist party objected to the event that had been planned for the first weekend of October in the country’s capital.

Though there are plenty of beer drinkers among the sizable Chinese and Indian minorities, protests against events deemed to be “western” and unIslamic - such as concerts and festivals involving alcohol - are common in Muslim-majority Malaysia and are usually led by the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS).

Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) said in a short statement on Monday that it has rejected the application for a permit by the organizers of the “Better Beer Festival 2017” to host the event, which would have entered its sixth year.

“If the organizers continue with the event without DBKL’s approval, action will be taken in accordance to existing laws,” city hall said.

Mybeer (M) Sdn Bhd, the company organizing the event, said in a separate statement that they were informed by DBKL officials that the decision was made “due to the political sensitivity surrounding the event”.

A member of PAS’ central committee, Riduan Mohd Nor, said in a statement on Sept. 10 that there is no guarantee that such events would not lead to criminal acts, rape and free sex.

Opponents of the beer festival also launched a campaign on Facebook to block the event.

Around 6,000 people had been expected to attend the two-day festival, which would have featured craft beers from at least 11 countries, according to Facebook posts by the organizers and local news reports.

(The Guardian)  -  A Malaysian rapper has been remanded in custody by a court in Penang over a music video entitled Oh My God that allegedly insults Islam because it was partly filmed in a mosque.

Namewee, whose real name is Wee Meng Chee, will be held for four days, a district police chief, Mior Faridalathrash Wahid, told Agence France-Presse.

He said the rapper was being investigated for defiling a place of worship with the intent of insulting a religion.

The rapper, who is also a film director, could face up to two years in prison, a fine, or both, according to local media.

The word “Allah” and sounds of the Islamic call to prayer were said to have been used in the four-minute Mandarin music video.

The video featured footage of Namewee and other singers, dressed in outfits representing different cultures and religions, performing inside a Penang mosque and a church as well as Hindu, Buddhist and Taoist temples.

Namewee was arrested at Kuala Lumpur international airport on his return from overseas late on Sunday. Investigations are continuing after he was remanded by the court in Penang.

Earlier this year, cinema posters and a billboard advertisement for a Hong Kong blockbuster were modified to erase a half-man, half-pig character. Pork and its byproducts are forbidden under the religion.

In July, several groups filed police reports claiming Namewee’s music video had insulted Islam.

“What do you expect us to do?” Malaysian Deputy Home Minister Wan Junaidi Jafaar said. “We have been very nice to the people who broke into our border. We have treated them humanely but they cannot be flooding our shores like this.”

“We have to send the right message that they are not welcome here,” he told The Associated Press, just days after about 1,000 refugees landed on the shores of Langkawi, a popular resort island in northern Malaysian near Thailand. Another 600 have arrived surreptitiously in Indonesia.

Southeast Asia, which for years tried to quietly ignore the plight of Burma’s 1.3 million Rohingya, finds itself caught in a spiraling humanitarian crisis that in many ways it helped create. In the last three years, more than 120,000 members of the Muslim minority, who are intensely persecuted in Buddhist-majority Burma, have boarded ships to flee to other countries, paying huge sums of money to human traffickers.

But in the face of a crackdown by security forces of various countries, the smugglers have been abandoning the ships, leaving the refugees to fend for themselves. An estimated 6,000 remain stranded at sea.

Malaysia, which is not a signatory of international conventions on refugees, is host to more than 150,000 refugees and asylum seekers, the majority whom are from Burma. More than 45,000 of them are Rohingya, according to the UN refugee agency, many more than almost any other country.

(Breitbart News)  -  Perak Mufti Tan Sri Harussani Zakaria, a Malaysian Islamic scholar, first claimed that marital rape does not exist but took it a step further when he insisted a man can enjoy sex with his wife even on a camel.

“Even the Prophet says even when they’re riding on the back of the camel, when the husband asks her, she must give,” he exclaimed. “So there’s no such thing as rape in marriage. This is made by European people, why should we follow?”

The only time a woman can refuse sex is when she is on her period, just gave birth, or is sick. He said the Koran “states that it will be ‘haram’ or forbidden to have sexual intercourse with a woman who is menstruating.” Muslim preacher Wan Ji Wan Hussin agrees with Zakaria.

“That term (marital rape) is not accurate in the practice of Islam because rape in Islam is defined as forced sexual intercourse outside of marriage,” he said.

Hussin asserted the husband cannot force his wife to have sex, but continues to say “the key issue is not getting consent, but revolves how men can show love and create a romantic atmosphere to change their spouses’ minds to willingly agree to sexual intercourse.” If a man does this, the woman still rejects him, and he forces himself upon her, it cannot be considered rape. Instead it is “considered not polite (beradab) in Islam.”

Islamic authorities declare “Jihad” against “Liberalism”

KUALA LUMPUR, (The Malay Mail)  ―  In its Friday sermon today, Malaysia’s federal Islamic authorities warned that Muslims are now stuck between two extremes: the liberals, and militant jihadists Islamic State (IS).

Accusing liberals of questioning and provoking the position of Islam in the country, the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) urged Muslims nationwide to initiate “jihad” by rejecting such ideologies, referring to the “holy struggle” that is mandated of Muslims.

“We should reject the two extremisms … We believe the effort to curb these two extremisms which are religious and liberalism extremists, is a major 'jihad',” the sermon said today.

“Especially when this involves the effort to preserve the position, upholding and exalting the position of Islam as the religion of the state.”

The sermon accused liberals of being worried with the allegedly balanced and just implementation of Islamic teachings and codes in the country, causing them to attack religious institutions by sowing distrust and misperception against them.

“This manifested provocation, is no longer in the form of merely ideas and thoughts, but has directly touched on the authority, job scope and functions of religious agencies either in the state or federal level.

The constitution declares Islam as the "religion of the Federation" of Malaysia. Muslims are obliged to follow the decisions of Syariah courts in matters concerning their religion. The Islamic judges are expected to follow the Shafi`i legal school of Islam, which is the main madh'hab of Malaysia. These courts apply Sharia law. 

“Even more saddening, the function and role of kings as the head of religion has also been questioned,” added the sermon.

In calling for “jihad”, Jakim has compared the liberals to IS, which it said has skewed the belief of “jihad” to mean solely armed struggle, leading to the killing and slaughter of innocents.

Despite that, it also blamed the liberals for alleging that religious schools and institutions of being a “ticking time bomb” in producing militant extremists such as IS fighters.

“In reality, not even 10 per cent of detainees related to IS was made of students or ex-students of religious institutions. The liberal extremists seem uncomfortable with the practice of Islam in this country,” it claimed.

In January, Jakim’s Director-General Datuk Othman Mustapha denounced the questioning of religious authorities as part of a liberalism movement that seeks to uphold individual interpretations of Islam.

In a previous sermon in October, Jakim had also claimed that liberal thinking is deviant, and together with pluralism, a threat to Malay-Muslim unity by weakening the community’s faith.

In September 2001 then Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad announced that Malaysia was an Islamic State.  Islamic courts have unanimously ruled that all ethnic Malays must remain Muslims. Even non-Malays who have converted to Islam are not allowed to leave Islam, and children born to Muslim parents are considered to be Muslims. A non-Muslim who wishes to marry a Muslim must first convert to Islam.

.Many Muslims who have attempted to convert have received death threats. Those who have converted lead a secret double life. The civil court claims that conversions are under the jurisdiction of the Syariah courts, but converts contend that as they are no longer Muslim the Syariah courts hold no power over them. Authorities only allow Sunni Islam to be practised, arresting those who stray from those beliefs. Converts taken to be rehabilitated by Islamic authorities are forced to dress and act as Muslims.

Islamic Lunacy: Now Scottie dogs are ‘disrespectful to Muslims’

The Commonwealth Games opened in Glasgow five day ago. Scotties were part of the opening ceremonies.

Malaysian politicians and religious leaders have attacked the use of Scottie dogs during the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony, claiming it was disrespectful to Muslims.

Around 40 Scottie dogs were used in the opening ceremony in Glasgow last Wednesday to lead teams around Celtic Park.

The dogs, which all wore tartan dog coats with the name of each team on them, were widely praised on social media, with many people stating they thought they had “stolen the show.” Hamish, who led out the Scotland team, received one of the biggest cheers of the night.

Judy Murray tweeted after the ceremony: “Scottie dogs in tartan coats at CG opening ceremony. Barkingly brilliant.”

However, not everyone was as impressed. Political and religious leaders in Malaysia have claimed the use of dogs connected to Muslim countries was “disrespectful.”

(From 1389 Blog - Counterjihad!) – Visiting Malaysia’s National Mosque on Sunday, President Obama was asked by the institution’s imam to end oppression against Muslims worldwide, Malaysia’s national press agency Bernama reported via CNS News. 

“Pray for me,” Obama replied, according to Grand Imam Ismail Muhammad, who took him on a 25-minute tour of the mosque, called Masjid Negara in Malay [more about that here], in Kuala Lumpur. 

“Obama also said that every day when he wakes up he always does his best to put an end to oppression and conflicts affecting communities,” Bernama quoted Ismail as saying. 

The 70 year-old cleric said Obama had frequently replied with InsyAllah (Malay for “Allah willing”) and terima kasih (“thank you”) during the tour. 

“It was nice of him, although he could not speak much of the Malay language  but understood what I had said to him,” he said. 

Obama, who wore a dark suit and removed his shoes, also visited and paid his respects at the National Mausoleum at the mosque complex, where former prime ministers and deputy prime ministers are buried. 

Malaysia’s Star newspaper quoted Abdullah Muhammad Zin, religious advisor to Prime Minister Najib Razak, as saying it was “not common” for the leader of a superpower to include a visit to a mosque in his itinerary. 

“There can be no better way for Obama to honor Islam than by visiting Masjid Negara,” he said. 

Bernama quoted several other senior Muslim figures commenting on the visit. 

“This is out of the ordinary as I cannot recall any non-Muslim world leader visiting the National Mosque and this is a good start for Muslims here,” said Ustaz Wan Akashah Wan Abdul Hamid, a religious scholar. 

The news agency also cited a former National Mosque imam, Hassan Mahmood Al-Hafiz, as saying that “the willingness of the world leader to set foot on the Islamic landmark was a good omen, more so when Muslims were being wrongly linked to violence.” 

The National Mosque was built in 1965, several years after Malaysia won independence from Britain, on the site of a Brethren Church that had been appropriated by the Malaysian government for the purpose. (The church, which had stood there since 1922, was offered an alternative site.)

Relations between Malaysia’s Muslim majority (around 61 percent) and minorities including Buddhists (almost 20 percent), Christians (9 percent) and Hindus (6 percent) have been troubled at times. 

Invited to comment on Obama’s decision to visit a mosque but not a church while in the country, Council of Churches of Malaysia general secretary Hermen Shastri demurred, but said that those responsible for arranging the visit had “ensured that he is made aware of the religious freedom issues in the country.” 

A spokesman for the National Evangelical Christian Fellowship chairman, Rev. Dr. Eu Hong Seng, said he welcomed the fact Obama chose to tour the National Mosque. 

“Given the challenges and concerns for non-Muslim religions in Malaysia, especially Christianity, it would have been good for President Obama to also visit the places of religious worship of other religions,” he said. “This would help him better understand the issues facing non-Muslim religions in Malaysia.”

A handful of pigs' faces have been censored in the Malaysian edition of the International New York Times, it seems.

The black marks were the work of Malaysian printing firm KHL, which blotted out the faces in a story about farming in the United States, according to the Malay Mail. A representative said it was their policy to obscure pigs because Malaysia was "a Muslim country".

There is no law banning pictures of pigs in Malaysia - a secular country with many faiths - but local media are careful not to offend Muslims who make up two-thirds of the country's 28 million people, the Malay Mail says reports BBC News.

A government spokesperson said the images were not outlawed, but that publishers should bear in mind "the sensitivities of various cultures". There appears to be increasing concern about offending Muslims in the country - last year a TV provider ran a warning ahead of a documentary about Pope Francis, and allegedly cut the words "Ya Allah!" from an Indian film this month.

In 2005 the children's film Babe was banned from cinemas because of its subject matter, and the similarity of the title to the Malay word for pig - "babi". Complaints from viewers saw the ban overturned, however, and it appeared on television the following year.

George Town, Malaysia  -  A mother of two and an eight-month pregnant woman were among 19 Muslim couples detained here by Penang Religious Department for committing khalwat (close proximity) on New Year Day.

The pre-dawn raid was carried out from 2am on several budget hotels in Sebarang Perai and Timur Laut districts from Department's chief enforcement officer Khairul Azman Azizan said the 29-year-old mother had taken her two children, aged between three and six year-old, to the hotel room to be with her boyfriend.

“They tried to pass themselves off as married couple but checks revealed they were not married,” he said.

Khairul said they also detained an eight-month pregnant woman with her boyfriend after they failed to prove that they were married.

He said those detained were in their 20s to 40s and included students from the local higher learning institutions.

The Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) officials in Mayaysia are looking for a Christian group that dared to use the word “Allah” in their worship illegally last weekend.

Malay newspapers had reported that the Christian group had allegedly used “Allah” at their Sunday function at a hotel in Klang, reigniting the battle for the word which is now before the country's apex court.

A Court of Appeal ruling decided that the home minister has the power to restrict use of the world reports the Malaysian Insider.

 

The Malaysian Government and religious authorities have not only gone to restrict Christians from using the word but have now started a campaign to outlaw Shia Islam in the country.

There are only some 1,500 Shias but the number cannot be independently verified.

In the latest case, deputy director of Jais Ahmad Zaki Arshad said they had yet to get proof that the Christian group had used the word “Allah” in their meeting.

"We are seeking the assistance of the hotel management to view footage of the closed-circuit television camera to check on the validity of the claim. We cannot act, based on a photograph in a newspaper," Ahmad Zaki told The Malaysian Insider.

He said the department was seeking the cooperation of the event organisers to come forward to facilitate investigation.

"A photograph is insufficient evidence to act."

Ahmad Zaki was referring to Utusan Malaysia's report on Monday which carried a photograph of the event, with the words, “International Full Gospel Fellowship: Keluarga Allah satelit Nilai dan satelit Puchong, 'Dari dalam gelap akan terbit terang’,” on a backdrop.

The department is investigating the case under a 1988 enactment which bars non-Muslims from using the word “Allah”.

The daily had reported that some 200 people had attended the gathering, organised by International Full Gospel Fellowship.

The report said those present sang songs containing the word “Allah”. Following this, two Muslim groups have called for action against a Christian group for allegedly using the word “Allah” at their function.

In their reaction, Pertubuhan Ikatan Kebajikan dan Dakwah Selangor (Ikddas) and Perkasa Selangor chapter urged Jais to investigate and act on the matter.

“From a legal perspective, it is clear the use of the word 'Allah' is prohibited to non-Muslims. If the organiser uses the sacred word in a non-Islamic function, then Jais should not hesitate to take action against them,” Ikddas president Rosdi Long told Utusan.

Selangor Perkasa chief Abu Bakar Yahya said it was inappropriate for non-Muslims to use the word, saying the Selangor sultan had issued a decree on the matter.

Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, who is also the Islamic religious head, recently called on non-Muslims in his state not to refer God as “Allah” and ordered that the word not be used in the Bible and in the Bahasa Malaysia section of Catholic weekly, Herald.

This, he said, was to avoid causing confusion among Muslims in Selangor.

Malaysia’s Sunni Muslims were today told that the Shiah school of Islam permitted sodomy and were called to stop its teachings from spreading as part of their “jihad”, the Arabic word for “holy struggle”.

In its weekly Friday sermon, Malaysia’s foremost Islamic authority issued a reminder that the world’s second-largest school of Islam had no historical links in the Southeast Asian country.

The Malaysian Islamic Development Department (JAKIM) warned its faithful here that departing from Sunni teachings would cause disunity and fighting among Muslims, which would destroy the bonds of the ummah and end in adherents being conquered by the “enemies of Islam”, reports The Malay Mail Online.

“Remember that any efforts towards halting these teachings is in a sense included in the ‘jihad’ because it counts as defending the sanctity of the religious teachings inherited from our Prophet Muhammad,” JAKIM said in its sermon, which is issued to mosques nationwide.

“Meanwhile, any efforts to breathe life to slander by spreading the Syiah teachings is among the practices which are not only misguided, but also misguiding.”

Shiah is often spelled as Syiah in Malaysia; its followers have been grouped with lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgenders (LGBT) whom JAKIM has previously branded religious deviants and a threat to orthodox Islam here.
