Dems Announce $2.1M Legal Fund For Illegal Aliens

(Newswars)  -  New Jersey is diverting over $2 million from taxpayers to provide legal representation for illegal aliens facing detention and deportation, according to a statement from the office of Governor Phil Murphy.

Sums of $925,000 will be presented to both Legal Services of New Jersey and the American Friends Service Committee, and additional amounts of $125,000 will be given to law school clinics at Rutgers University and Seton Hall University, for a total allocation of $2.1 million.

“Families who came to New Jersey for a better life do not deserve to be torn apart by the federal government’s cruel and discriminatory policies,” said Governor Murphy. “Deportation is one of the harshest consequences an individual can face under U.S. law, yet most immigrants do not have the right to appointed counsel and many cannot afford an attorney.”

“This funding will help provide critical legal representation to low-income residents who are detained and facing deportation in New Jersey and have no one to defend their rights.”

Illegal aliens comprised 7.9 percent of the New Jersey workforce in 2014, according to figures produced by the American Immigration Council.

Pew Research Center concludes that New Jersey has one of the largest populations of illegal aliens in the country, estimated at roughly 500,000 as of 2014.
