POVERTY - The End of the Road for Truckers

Now unemployed truck drivers
  • Giant multi-national corporations are not spending mountains of cash on driverless vehicles so you spend time playing with your toy phone while in the car.  Corporations want to fire millions of taxi, bus and truck drivers and replace them with robots that never get paid or pay taxes into the system.

(The Guardian)  -  Jeff Baxter’s sunflower-yellow Kenworth truck shines as bright and almost as big as the sun. Four men clean the glistening cab in the hangar-like truck wash at Iowa 80, the world’s largest truck stop.
Baxter has made a pitstop at Iowa 80 before picking up a 116ft-long wind turbine blade that he’s driving down to Texas, 900 miles away.
Baxter, 48, is one of the 1.8 million Americans, mainly men, who drive heavy trucks for a living, the single most common job in many US states. Driving is one of the biggest occupations in the world. Another 1.7 million people drive taxis, buses and delivery vehicles in the US alone. But for how long? Having “disrupted” industries including manufacturing, music, journalism and retail, Silicon Valley has its eyes on trucking.
Google, Uber, Tesla and the major truck manufacturers are looking to a future in which people like Baxter will be replaced – or at the very least downgraded to co-pilots – by automated vehicles that will save billions but will cost millions of jobs. It will be one of the biggest changes to the jobs market since the invention of the automated loom – challenging the livelihoods of millions across the world.
“I’m scared to death of that,” says Baxter, an impish man with bad teeth that he hides behind his hand as he laughs. “I can’t operate a pocket calculator!”
“The only human beings left in the modern supply chain are truck drivers. If you go to a modern warehouse now, say Amazon or Walmart, the trucks are unloaded by machines, the trucks are loaded by machines, they are put into the warehouse by machines. Then there is a guy, probably making $10 an hour, with a load of screens watching these machines. Then what you have is a truckers’ lounge with 20 or 30 guys standing around getting paid. And that drives the supply chain people nuts,” he says.
The goal, he believes, is to get rid of the drivers and “have ultimate efficiency”.
“I think this is imminent. Five years or so. This is a space race – the race to get the first driverless vehicle that is viable,” says Murphy. “My fellow drivers don’t appear to be particularly concerned about this. They think it’s way off into the future. All the people I have talked to on this book tour, nobody thinks this is imminent except for me. Me and Elon Musk, I guess.”

thats BS ...
driveless vehicules never go far in the current century ... at least ... nobody trust a machine that can be hack by some kid with a internet link ...

yes... I believe this... just as "container cargo" replaced most dockworkers. BUT, the technology will open up new jobs (jobs that require more education & skill). Somebody has to maintain the systems. Somebody sill has to repair the trucks.
Not all "doom & gloom" (yet).... Robots took a lot of the jobs in manufacturing... and the industry is screaming for a trained technical workforce to maintain the machines ... schools aren't even training like the old days to use a wrench to bolt on a fender..... there is little actual "Vocational/Trades"training at ANY level of the Public Education system (and face it.. we can't ALL be Doctors & Lawyers & such).....
Oh... and we need MORE people employed. As long as GOVERNMENT makes it more expensive to HIRE a new employee than to work one 80 hours a week..... well.... (thats a BIG problem)

don`t be fool by that ...
unfortunnely ... machines will be prepared to repair everything , as robots build cars and else ... some clever Skynet inventor will create that ...
for now ... sure mechanics are scarce ... in this pussyfication world of social studies , and wuss empowerment of nitwitts ... who want to be a mechanic ? , if you need one , they go to the brand and pay to those guys in white suit a bundle of cash ... as if they are "cardoctors" ...
machines same day , fix other machines ... but machines don`t vote ...
maybe as today some idle sleeze social security bum , but potencial voter , get "a minimum state pay" ... as robots replace danger jobs ... state give that universal income to everybody , the ugly, the good , and the bad ones ...
Its not my ideal world ... but as we saw , his the way we are all going ...
machines will be working , states pay income , and we vote for the "state" handout party ...
man ?!?!?!?!
that is 1984 !!!!!!!!!!!!!! ORWELLIAN WORLD ...

to you october 11 , 2017 at 11.37 AM

on that "Vocational/Trades" training you mentioned , over here we got a few good now ,
... but mosthly with our Path to Socialist Revolution , all those studies where erased around 40 years ago ... and them only factories , as an aprentice , workers did managed to get some kind of studies of that sort ... until as most factories where State interventioned by the Communist Party croonies ... then they bust on default ... as almost our State , cause we must beg a few times to the IMF for lended Money ...
our schools , i mean after high school , give that doctor&and engenieers degree , as education came more egualitarian cause democracy came on help to that ... but those jobs scarce , and only by influx Money from the EU , or lending banks aboard ... things got more wealthy ... but it was a false prosperity ... only some got away with it , in the 2008 crisis ...
but our current prime-minister enjoy that we got a well educated work force , even all college degree one ...
i understand his ideia ...
we only got a work force on the State Aparattus ( mosthly his party clientelle ) , the food distribution , telecomunications and cable TV apps , or the big turism scene , hotels, food , travels , and so on ... we got almost no industries , or manufactur workforce, cause as the rest of the world , China got it all over as the only country with a comercial surplus against any other country on earth ... they work , made goods , sell then , get rich ...
a well educated force even doing nothing related with their studies ... are more flexible , and easy to cope with ... they give no social major troubles ...is his ideia i think ...
remember factories workers rioting ...scenes from the past ... factories no more ...
unemployment is being coming down , mosthly by part-time jobs , turism related , and if that not work ... we got a large number of idle people living on social security , that allow that "ancient practice : pay bread and circus , for votes " ... and to fake educational ratios , "buying votes with fake skills" , sometimes we got some "fasttrack" "degrees programs" that give "new oportunnities" to get skills , that allow to cling a further step in the corporate ladder ... and "grab a few more votes from happy people on a wage gain " ...
thats our education scene ...
so better you not be so optismistic about those jobs ... machines will replace mechanics too , and in factories , bots do it already ...
and bots don`t vote , or go on rioting for higher pay , or a few hours of work ...
and on that container cargo ... over here we didn`t replace any dockworkers ... they still are needed ... and if they don`t , unions will came forward ...
we are a kind of luddites over here ... for political gains ... but we like those digital gadgets too , fast cars , and shinning ones vacations , on some kind of dominican beach , or a home one ...

on that need of mechanics again ...
its a ancient practice to mend old cars , and go with then all day ... but thats America ...
over here only the rich can afford getting into cars to going on the road ... our red fascists maire put city laws that "close" down some cars from a certain plate years , the "right" to move in some city areas ... more and more ... freedom are for the wealthy ,not for poors ,or for those who got a close mind on consuming cars as french fries ...
so for old cars , mechanics are not needed , as for new cars , the brands allow replacement of their brand cars with 3 years use , and in those those threee years they provide free repair if sold,or lease contracts allow ... and as more as that mechanic evolve ,to electric or else ... less mechanics ... old school are needed ... so you better stick with that occupation or you , or apply for a social security handout from the state ...
only america still got a chance not to became 1984 , but traitor Trump say he does the proper things , but then he back down as his masters aboard say he to do ...
