(Zerohedge)  California has made yet another step on its way to complete reliance on renewable energy by banning the use of gas-powered water heaters and furnaces from 2030.

The proposal to ban these products was approved unilaterally by the California Air Resources Board yesterday, Bloomberg reports.

“We’re really hopeful that this is the beginning of a domino effect and other states will follow California’s lead,” said Leah Louis-Prescott, an associate at RMI, a clean energy non-profit.

The ban does not cover gas stoves for now but many cities in California are seeking to discourage the use of gas stoves and a switch to electric-only appliances.

Now, with the gas furnace ban, Californians will have to familiarize themselves with heat pumps: all-electric heating appliances that are gaining popularity in Europe as an alternative to traditional heating methods.

Touted as the way forward in heating technology, heat pumps are praised for efficiency and emission footprint but they do have constraints such as temperature and they add to electricity consumption, which could strain a grid designed for a certain—lower—level of consumption.

Earlier this month California moved to ban the sales of internal-combustion engine cars from 2035. While climate activists have welcomed the news, there are some issues, such as the fact that EVs in California, which is the biggest EV market in the States, only make up 15 percent of new car sales, per figures from the California New Car Dealers' Association.

(Los Angeles Times)  -  The prospect of machines stealing our jobs has perturbed and enraged humans for at least 200 years. The Luddites hit the alarm bell, and not without reason: The automation of weaving and spinning technology displaced an entire class of skilled artisans. 

But ever since, economists and historians have dismissed the Luddites as jokes, because the forces of industrialization they decried ended up making the world a far richer and more comfortable place. Technological progress has created far more jobs than it has destroyed.

So far. But this time might be different. This time, writes Martin Ford in "Rise of the Robots: Technology and the Threat of a Jobless Future," the robots are coming for (almost) all the jobs. They're getting too smart, too flexible and too convenient. And that's a problem, because if robots take all the jobs, our long march of progress may well go into reverse.

"We are running up against a fundamental limit both in terms of the capabilities of the people being herded into colleges and the number of high-skill jobs that will be available for them if they manage to graduate," writes Ford. "The problem is that the skills ladder is not really a ladder at all: it is a pyramid, and there is only so much room at the top."

That's a bleak view. Even bleaker, however, are the prospects for success of Ford's preferred "dramatic policy response" — a redistribution of wealth from the winners to everybody else, in the form of a "guaranteed basic income" that ensures displaced workers have enough income to keep the consumer economy chugging along.

Ford is not wrong when he declares that "a fundamental restructuring of our economic rules will be required." But it's hard to see how this will happen. Which leaves us in a pickle. Economic inequality is growing. Robots are gobbling up more and more jobs. A broken political system is unable to fix the problem. Call it the Luddites' revenge. The Industrial Revolution's chickens are finally coming home to roost.

The Los Angeles area Carson City Council has slapped a ban on any new oil and gas development in the city for the next 45 days, effectively stalling a proposed Occidental Petroleum Corp. drilling project that is unpopular with residents.

The unanimous vote came late Tuesday night, after residents and environmental advocates spent two hours arguing in favor of the temporary ban. The city is in the midst of a comment period for a draft environmental impact report on the project, which seeks to install 200 new oil and gas drilling wells inside a 30-foot-high walled compound on a 6.5-acre site near Cal State Dominguez Hills.

The moratorium blocks the city from accepting any permit applications for drilling, redrilling or deepening of any oil or gas well reports the Daily Breeze.

“There are too many questions, too many concerns and possible bad consequences,” said Councilman Al Robles, who introduced the ordinance. “The questions and possible risks significantly outweigh the possible benefits. I like to go to Las Vegas and gamble but it’s always with my own money and at my own risk. I refuse to gamble with the health and well-being of the residents of Carson.”

Robles advanced the moratorium idea earlier this month in response to ongoing complaints from a vocal group of residents who believe their health and quality of life will be damaged if Occidental is allowed to develop the site over the Dominguez Oil Field.

Occidental has had two test wells there since 2011 and, using modern directional drilling methods, pulled enough oil from deep underground that the company believes it can generate 6,000 barrels of oil and 3 million standard cubic feet of natural gas per day when peak production is reached. Though Occidental officials have repeatedly promised not to use aggressive extraction methods like fracking, residents continue to express distrust with the company.

“The oil companies have drilled there for 100 years, and now all the easy-to-get-out oil is gone and ‘Big Oil’ has to resort to riskier methods,” resident Glen White told the council Tuesday. “They get all the profits. We get all the risks. Their profits, our resources.”

Members of Washington D.C.-based Food & Water Watch, Communities for a Better Environment of Huntington Park, and the Palos Verdes-South Bay Sierra Club also asked the council to pass the ban. Last month, the Los Angeles City Council banned any use of controversial well-enhancement methods such as hydraulic fracturing, gravel packing and acidizing. Those aggressive oil-extraction tactics have been banned by several states already because of concerns about environmental risks such as earthquakes and chemical contamination of groundwater supplies.

Carson City Attorney Bill Wynder said he and other staff members will study the dangers of oil and gas extraction during the moratorium and return to the council with a recommendation on how to move forward.

The council could potentially extend the moratorium for another two years.

The Environmental Protection Agency's proposal would effectively stop the building of new energy generation plants if they use coal reports Reuters News.  The EPA is the main tool Comrade Obama has left to reduce greenhouse gas emissions which he pledged at an international climate meeting to cut by about 17 percent by 2020 from 2005 levels.

A field of vivid green algae so large it can be seen from space is floating in waters off Antarctica, causing a feeding frenzy.

Images of the bloom, estimated to be around 200 kilometers wide and 100 kilometers long, were captured by Australian scientists monitoring a satellite 650 kilometers above the Earth.

Scientist from the Australian Antarctic Division say they are still not sure exactly what caused the bloom but they predict it will be causing a stir among the local wildlife reports ABC News.

Research scientist Mark Curran says much of the food chain will be benefiting from the algae.

The algae has been floating around for the past 20 days and was visible from space.

The bloom is a natural event and unlikely to negatively impact the environment.

The $1-billion Genesis Solar Energy Project being built in near Bylthe in California's Mojave Desert is in danger of cancellation by hand-wringing by liberal weenies.

The building of the project has been expedited by Democrats in the state and federal regulatory agencies because it is a government subsidized "politically correct" business.  Meanwhile non-politically correct businesses face endless red tape, government regulations and high taxes for daring to try and create jobs and wealth.

Genesis had hoped to be among the first of 12 approved solar farms to start operating in Southern California deserts.  The 250-megwatt plant, being built on federal Bureau of Land Management land 25 miles west of Blythe, is backed by an $825-million Department of Energy loan guarantee reports the Los Angeles Times.

But Liberals and Socialist (is there really any difference?) are out to delay or destroy the green solar project any way they can.  They are using every trick in the book to prevent progress.

• As if by "magic", and right on cue, a few desert kit foxes died of the first ever recorded cases in history of distemper among the animals.
• Weenie "environmentalists" claim the poor foxes might be under stress.
• And local Native Americans now claim a discovered bed of desert charcoal is possible evidence of an ancient Indian cremation site.

The bed of charcoal magically appeared at just the right moment.  Remains are protected by the Federal Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act.  Eldred Enas, chairman of the Colorado River Indian Tribes, said in a letter to the federal government last month that the burned charcoal site is "too sacred to disturb."

Deana Clifford, state wildlife veterinarian for the California Department of Fish and Game, said she isn't certain the outbreak of distemper among the foxes is connected to Genesis, "but we know that habitat disturbance causes stress, and when animals succumb to stress they become more susceptible to disease."

Double Bullshit.

In the meantime, work has been halted on 400 acres while state and federal archaeologists conduct a detailed assessment. . . . and we all know how fast government worker drones will conduct detailed assessment reports.  Watching a glacier move is faster.

NextEra officials acknowledged that if they cannot meet time line power purchase agreement with Pacific Gas & Electric Co. the solar project will close down costing 800 construction jobs.  If that were to happen, 80% of the project's outstanding loans would be covered by the federal government, and the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. . . . translation  -  the taxpayers will be stuck with the fucking bill and there will still be no electric power.

BOTTOM LINE  -  Nothing gets done in America, and that is not an accident.  The environmental movement has been captured by anti-progress Luddite Socialists who hate capitalism, progress and the comforts provided to people by modern technology.

In their hatred of progress and capitalist inequality they have set up endless barriers of government red tape.  Building projects that could create jobs and wealth are delayed for years, even decades.  The Nature-Nazis use every insane Liberal law on the books to prevent progress on any front.

The Luddites were a social movement of 19th-century English textile artisans who protested – often by destroying mechanized looms – against the changes produced by the Industrial Revolution.

The old English Luddites broke the law with violence.  They went to jail or were hanged.

The modern Luddite uses the law in court to block all possible capitalist building projects that might lift people out of poverty, create jobs and wealth.  The Modern Luddites want us to all live in a pretend Socialist never-never land where everyone is "equal" and no one has money.  The environment is their weapon to destroy America.

Now plans for a 1,700-mile-long tar-sands oil pipeline across the Midwest face a variety of Socialist-Luddite political  hurdles. The Luddites claim they are worried about a large black beetle with red spots whose habitat, it seems by magic, lies right where the pipeline would go.

The Canadian pipeline company TransCanada has already moved into beetle relocation mode reports the Los Angeles Times.

Over the summer, a University of Nebraska researcher led a massive effort to find, trap and relocate more than 2,000 of the beetles from the pipeline's proposed route through Nebraska. A 100-mile-long corridor atop the pipeline route was mowed to a nub in the hope of leaving the route unattractive for the beetles to return.

On Wednesday, three environmental groups filed a federal lawsuit in Nebraska, challenging the right of federal agencies to authorize work to help save the beetle from a pipeline that hasn't even been authorized yet.

Marxist "Conservationists" say the State Department's environmental review should have taken into account not just the beetles, but also migratory birds such as the critically endangered whooping cranes whose path northward from Texas.

Michael George, a field supervisor for the Fish and Wildlife Service in Nebraska, said the federal government issued a permit to University of Nebraska researcher Wyatt Hoback to carry out the beetle relocation and research over the summer.

First the 100-Watt light bulb disappeared from our high streets for good.

Now in an even bigger reform, it is the end for the 60-watt bulb which has been outlawed by the European Union.

They will stop being manufactured at the end of the month, forcing all householders to switch to energy-saving alternatives when stocks run out, reports the UK Daily Mail.

But customers have reacted with fury that the low-energy version which will replace them has soared in price.

Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs) which last longer and use less electricity will become the only option, but critics have complained they are also less bright.

One major wholesaler, Sparks in north London, said the price charged by its supplier for an 11-watt CFL had risen from £1.39 in June to £1.67 today, an increase of 20 per cent.

At Argos, a Philips 11-watt CFL was £3.99 in September 2009 and had been hiked up to  £4.99 last week, a rise of 25 per cent. At Sainsbury’s, the cheapest energy-saving bulb is now £2, up from £1.21 for the same bulb two years ago – a rise of 65 per cent.

The basic versions do not work with dimmer switches, which require you to invest in a special dimmer version, costing up to £12.

Manufacturers have blamed recent price rises on the growing cost of raw materials required to make the bulbs.

They have warned further increases are to come as the Chinese government has raised prices of phosphors to protect its domestic supply.

Giles Chichester, the Conservative energy spokesman in the European parliament, accused manufacturers of ‘exploiting a market opportunity’ by raising the price of 60-watt bulbs.

So-called UK "Conservatives" are just Socialists without the testicles to admit that they are Socialists.  How dare those merchants sell a product at the going market rate!  Oh horror of horrors.

The Conservatives need to stop pretending and just join the Labour Party.

The price of traditional 60-watt bulbs has doubled since the EU announced its ban in 2008. One manufacturer which charged 16p in 2008 now charges 33p, and at Sainsbury’s the price per bulb has gone up from 70p to £1.

When the 100-watt bulb was phased out in 2009, there was panic buying across the high street as millions of Britons realised the traditional bulb, around since Victorian times, would disappear for good after 120 years.

The Government agreed to an EU decision to replace them with ‘green’ alternatives in 2008, and ministers claimed the switch would save 5m tons of carbon a year.

But experts expressed concern the new bulbs contain mercury, which could make them dangerous to dispose of, and medical charities warned they could trigger migraines and epilepsy.
