(Breitbart Jerusalem)  -  Qatar has joined Lebanon and Tunisia to become the latest state to ban the screening of the hit movie Wonder Woman starring Israeli actress Gal Gadot.

As Breitbart Jerusalem reported, Gadot, who served in the IDF during the 2006 Lebanon war, has come under fire for her open support of Israel, in particular for a tweet during 2014’s conflict with Gaza in which she prayed for the safety of Israel’s citizens.

Now Doha News reports the presence of the Israeli star in the blockbuster is enough for authorities in Qatar to ban the screening. Wonder Woman was initially scheduled to premiere in Doha last Thursday across local theater chains VOX Cinemas Qatar and Novo Cinemas.

On Facebook, she previously sent her “love and prayers to my fellow Israeli citizens. Especially to all the boys and girls who are risking their lives protecting my country against the horrific acts conducted by Hamas, who are hiding like cowards behind women and children…We shall overcome!!!”

Gadot also expressed support for the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) during the 2014 Gaza conflict. That was enough for the Palestinian Authority not to screen the blockbuster.

(Gulf News)  -  Tunisia has completed a 200-km barrier along its frontier with Libya to try to keep out Islamist militants, and will soon install electronic monitoring systems, Defence Minister Farhat Hachani said on Saturday.

Libya’s chaos since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011 has allowed Daesh (ISIS) to gain a foothold there, and officials say militants who carried out two major attacks in Tunisia last year had trained in militant camps in Libya.

Troops have raised a wall and dug trenches 2 km from the Libyan border, and European and American military trainers will soon train Tunisian forces to improve electronic surveillance with cameras and radar, Hachani told reporters on a visit to the border.

“Today we finished closing it off, and this will help us protect our border, and stop the threat,” he said.

Security forces said the defences had already helped to reduce smuggling.

Daesh controls the Libyan city of Sirte and has attacked key oil installations as it expands beyond its heartland in Iraq and Syria.

More than 3,000 Tunisians have left to fight for Daesh (ISIS) and other militant groups in Syria and Iraq, but Hachani said many had now returned to North Africa to join the group in Libya.

Since its own democratic revolution in 2011, Tunisia has been praised as a model of democratic transition, with free elections, a new constitution and a politics of compromise between secular and Islamist parties.

But last year’s two major attacks, on a museum in Tunis and a beach hotel in Sousse, dealt heavy blows to its tourist industry, a mainstay of the economy.

(Hurriyet Daily News)  -  Tunisia on April 2 accused Turkey of facilitating the transit of fighters bound for neighbouring Syria and Iraq, where thousands of its citizens have joined the ranks of jihadist groups.
   
The accusation by Foreign Minister Taieb Baccouche comes just two weeks after the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) claimed responsibility for a deadly attack on tourists at the Bardo National Museum.
   
Tunisia says 3,000 of its citizens are fighting alongside jihadist groups in Syria, Iraq and Libya, and that 500 battle-hardened veterans have returned to the country where they are considered a security threat.
   
"We have asked our ambassador in Turkey to draw the attention of the Turkish authorities to the fact that we do not want a Muslim nation such as Turkey to help directly or indirectly terrorism in Libya by facilitating the movements of terrorists," Baccouche said.
   
He said Turkey was a "passage point" for fighters who go to Syria or for those who travel to Libya and then infiltrate across the porous border into Tunisia.
  
Tunisia has said that the two gunmen who had killed 22 foreign tourists and a policeman at the Bardo on March 18 had trained on the use of weapons in Libya, where IS has gained a foothold in recent months.
   
The two assailants were themselves gunned down, and on Sunday Tunisia said it had killed the alleged leader of the jihadists behind the massacre, Algerian Lokmane Abou Sakhr.
   
Turkey has been repeatedly criticised by its Western allies for not doing enough to halt the flow across Turkish territory of European nationals seeking to join IS jihadists in Syria.

(McClatchy News)  -  A growing number of Tunisians who’ve joined the ranks of the Islamic State, including 4,000 believed fighting in Libya and another 3,000 fighting with the group in Syria and Iraq, pose a threat to their home country and as many as 15 nations in sub-Saharan and North Africa, according to security experts and United Nations officials.

Among the countries at risk are Chad, Niger and Mauritania, where poverty is exacerbated by problems ranging from drought to poor governance, the experts say.

Officials have long known that Tunisia, the first country to have thrown off a dictatorial government in the so-called Arab Spring of 2011 and considered the only success story of the Arab Spring nations, has become a fertile zone for Islamic State recruiters. On Tuesday, one of Tunisia’s most wanted men, Ahmed Rouissi, was reported killed fighting with Islamic State militants in the Libyan city of Sirte. Tunisian authorities had accused him of masterminding the murders of two Tunisian opposition leaders in 2013, which plunged the country into crisis.

Until recently, there had been little appreciation for the sheer numbers of Tunisians who’ve joined the Islamic State.

A 2014 report by the U.S. State Department’s bureau on counterterrorism flagged the growing security threat that Tunisian jihadists represent and suggested they were more numerous than might be expected, but it offered no specifics.

“The disproportionate numbers of Tunisians among those traveling to fight in Libya, Mali, and Syria – and the ensuing return of these fighters – is another cause of concern,” the report warned.

Officials familiar with developments in Tunisia say they have been told that local authorities have interrogated between 500 and 1,000 Tunisian fighters who’ve returned to their homeland from foreign battlefields.

Experts said Islamic State recruiters are using social media, including Facebook and Twitter, to woo young Tunisians, particularly after the government there cracked down on conservative Salafist mosques.

Tunisians also account for about 300, or half, of the 600-strong Ansar al Dine (Defenders of the Faith) jihadist rebel group affiliated with al Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb, which is active in southern Algeria and Mali, said one North African security expert, who asked not to be named because of the sensitive nature of the subject.

Another 200 military combatants affiliated with the Islamic State or al Qaida are believed to be operating in the Chaambi mountains on the Tunisia-Algeria border, the expert said.

In addition, authorities are worried about the Ansar al Shariah in Tunisia itself. Tunisia outlawed the group in 2013 after the assassinations in which Rouissi was blamed, but experts believe it is still operating in small cells.

“The Tunisian government authorities are very concerned about the large Islamic State presence in Libya,” said a senior U.N. official who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the subject.


Tunisia has a small army and much bigger security service. However, the security service is have a difficulty collecting intelligence on jihadi movements because of its reputation for the widespread use of torture during the 23-year rule of President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, who was deposed in the Arab Spring revolt.

Tunis (AFP News) - Tunisian authorities have arrested a blogger as he returned from a trip abroad weeks after he was convicted of defaming army officers, his lawyer said Thursday.

Yassine Ayari, 33, was taken into custody overnight after landing at Tunis-Carthage airport and was whisked to jail in line with the court verdict pronounced against him.

The military prosecutor said Ayari had been sentenced in absentia on November 18 to three years' jail on charges of having "defamed army officers and senior defence ministry officials".

Ayari, who was returning from France when he was detained overnight, had accused these officials of financial abuse, the prosecutor said in a statement.

The blogger was unaware of the verdict against him for "undermining" the army, his lawyer Sami Ben Amor said, adding that the verdict was "very harsh".

Ayari, who has posted on Facebook that he stands by every word he has written, has appealed the charges against him and a new hearing in the case has been set for January 6, Ben Amor said.

"This case undermines freedom of speech and is the first of its kind to emerge under the reign of Beji Caid Essebsi," said the lawyer, adding that "Yassine Ayari is paying the price of his political views".

Essebsi, an 88-year old anti-Islamist, won Tunisia's first free presidential election on Sunday, capping off the transition to democracy in the birthplace of the Arab Spring.

His victory follows October legislative polls won by his Nidaa Tounes party.

In recent months, Ayari had published blogs very critical of Nidaa Tounes.

Essebsi is a veteran politician who served under previous Tunisian regimes, including in the government of autocratic president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali who was ousted in the 2011 uprising.

(Reuters) - Tunisia's Ennahda party, the first Islamist movement to secure power after the 2011 "Arab Spring" revolts, conceded defeat on Monday in elections that are set to make its main secular rival the strongest force in parliament.

Official results from Sunday's elections - the second parliamentary vote since Tunisians set off uprisings across much of the Arab World by overthrowing autocrat Zine El-Abidine Ben Ali - were still to be announced.

But a senior official at Ennahda, which ruled in a coalition until it was forced to make way for a caretaker government during a political crisis at the start of this year, acknowledged defeat by the secular Nidaa Tounes party.

"We have accepted this result, and congratulate the winner Nidaa Tounes," the official, Lotfi Zitoun, told Reuters. However, he repeated the party's call for a new coalition including Ennahda. "We are calling once again for the formation of a unity government in the interest of the country."

Earlier, a party source said preliminary tallies showed the secular party had won 80 seats in the 217-member assembly, ahead of 67 secured by Ennahda.

"According to the preliminary results, we are in the lead and in a comfortable position," one Nidaa Tounes official said, without confirming figures given by the first source.

One of the most secular Arab countries, Tunisia has been hailed as an example of political compromise after overcoming a crisis between the secular and Islamist movements and approving a new constitution this year that allowed the elections.

Electoral authorities were due to give preliminary results later on Monday, but larger parties had observers at polling stations to oversee the initial counts, allowing them to tally results unofficially.

Ennahda, which espouses a pragmatic form of political Islam, won Tunisia's first free election in 2011 after Ben Ali fled protests against corruption and repression, and went into exile in Saudi Arabia.

The party formed a coalition government with two secular partners but had to stand aside in the crisis that erupted over the murder of two opposition leaders by Islamist militants.

During campaigning Ennahda cast itself as a party that learned from its mistakes, but Nidaa Tounes appeared to have capitalized on criticism that it had mismanaged the economy and had been lax in tackling hardline Islamists.

one of the most progressive in the Arab world.

After decades of dictatorship and two years of arguments and compromises, Tunisians on Sunday finally have a new constitution laying the foundations for a new democracy.

The document is groundbreaking as one of the most progressive constitutions in the Arab world — and for the fact that it got written at all. It passed late Sunday by 200 votes out of 216 in the Muslim Mediterranean country that inspired uprisings across the region after overthrowing a dictator in 2011.

"This constitution, without being perfect, is one of consensus," assembly speaker Mustapha Ben Jaafar said after the vote. "We had today a new rendezvous with history to build a democracy founded on rights and equality," reports the Associated Press.

The constitution enshrining freedom of religion and women's rights took two years to finish. During that period, the country was battered by high unemployment, protests, terrorist attacks, political assassinations and politicians who seemed more interested in posturing than finishing the charter.

The new constitution sets out to make the North African country of 11 million people a democracy, with a civil state whose laws are not based on Islamic law, unlike many other Arab constitutions. An entire chapter of the document, some 28 articles, is dedicated to protecting citizens' rights, including protection from torture, the right to due process, and freedom of worship. It guarantees equality between men and women before the law and the state commits itself to protecting women's rights.

"This is the real revolution, many democratic constitution don't even have that," said Yahyaoui. "It will have a real impact on the rest of the Arab region, because finally we can say that women's rights are not a Western concept only, but also exist in Tunisia."

Tunisia has always had the most progressive legislation on women's rights in the Arab world and Yahyaoui believes the long period of writing has made people comfortable with its contents.

One of the most hotly debated articles guarantees "freedom of belief and conscience," which would permit atheism and the practice of non-Abrahamic religions frowned upon in other Islamic countries.

It also bans incitement to violence and declaring a Muslim an apostate — a fallen Muslim — which leaves them open to death threats. In response, conservative law makers insisted that "attacks on the sacred" be forbidden, which many see as a threat to freedom of expression.

Constitutional scholar Slim Loghmani said despite some drawbacks, the constitution is an "historic compromise between identity and modernity" that can serve as a model for other countries in the region seeking a balance between an Arab-Islamic heritage and contemporary ideas of human rights and good governance.

"It's a step forward in the nagging question of cultural identity in Arab countries," he said, lauding in particular not just freedom of religion but what he calls the freedom "not to have a religion."

(Magharebia.com)  -  Tunisia is losing control over its borders with Libya and Algeria, according to the International Crisis Group.

The country's frontier has become a hotbed for extremists, jihadists and criminals. Hard drugs, weapons, and explosives were entering Tunisia on a regular basis from Libya, the research body said in a November 28th report.

The northern half of the Tunisian-Algerian border is being used for the growing and smuggling of cannabis, as well as small arms trafficking.

Algerian Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal recently revealed that terrorist groups in Tunisia were funded from drugs proceeds.

During a meeting on December 12th with Algerian civil society addressing the issues of security and drug smuggling, Sellal said that he had informed Tunisian authorities that terrorist groups in Jebel Chaambi were funded from the proceeds of drugs that cross the western borders towards the eastern borders.

Algerian media quoted Sellal as saying that the amount of confiscated goods represented only one tenth of smuggled goods.

The Crisis Group report warned that the continuation of this situation would contribute to the emergence of so-called Islamo-gangsterism. These gangs blend jihadism and organized crime with contraband networks operating on the borders and eventually move these phenomena to the cities.

The study called for improved relations between central authorities and residents of the border areas in addition to closer relations between Maghreb countries.

Tunisia, Algeria, and Libya are seeking to further security co-ordination to protect their borders through regular meetings to assess the situation and exchange information about the movements of terrorist groups, the activity of smugglers and drug dealers, and the reduction of organised crime.

During his December visit to Tunisia, Libyan Deputy Prime Minister Sadiq Abdulkarim said that Tunisia represented important strategic depth for Libya. Abdulkarim stressed the need to eliminate smuggling between the two countries through sustainable development.

As a preventive plan to curb smuggling, a free economic zone on the Tunisian-Libyan border is expected to be created this year, according to a December 12th statement from Libya's economy minister.

Tunisian Islamists

Smuggling has negative repercussions on the national economy, according to economics professor Abdjalil Badri.

"Smuggling is economic terrorism that weakens the state through attrition and sabotage of the economy," Badri said. "The goal is to impoverish the state, which is what terrorist groups are looking for to strengthen their presence and establish control over the country."

Badri warned that governments were "no longer able to control the hemorrhage of smuggled goods to the north and south".

The trade of contraband goods is a livelihood for many young people in Tunisia, especially residents of the border areas and some inland areas.

Nabil Nassri, a 28-year-old from Sidi Bouzid and a smuggled fuel dealer said it was "a profitable source of income as well, although it is hard work but the risk is better than unemployment".

Security forces thwart smuggling operations on a daily basis, especially on the Libyan border.
"We are working day and night to fight smuggling and trap smugglers," explained Lotfi Makhloufi, a security agent. "We have been able to thwart many operations, where we have confiscated a number of times smuggled weapons and explosives, as well as food, alcoholic beverages, and drugs."

"Honestly, controlling the border is not an easy thing due to its length, extensiveness, and the ruggedness of the desert," Makhloufi added. "It requires the availability of advanced electronic equipment that outweighs the equipment used by smugglers to transport their goods. This is what we hope for in order to eliminate smuggling and crack down on all smugglers and terrorists."

Tunisian women have travelled to Syria to wage "sex jihad" by comforting Islamist fighters battling the regime there, Interior Minister Lotfi ben Jeddou has told MPs.

"They have sexual relations with 20, 30, 100" militants, the minister told members of the National Constituent Assembly on Thursday.

"After the sexual liaisons they have there in the name of 'jihad al-nikah' - (sexual holy war, in Arabic) - they come home pregnant," Ben Jeddou told the MPs reports the UK Telegraph.

He did not elaborate on how many Tunisian women had returned to the country pregnant with the children of jihadist fighters.

Jihad al-nikah, permitting extramarital sexual relations with multiple partners, is considered by some hardline Sunni Muslim Salafists as a legitimate form of holy war.

The minister also did not say how many Tunisian women were thought to have gone to Syria for such a purpose, although media reports have said hundreds have done so.

Hundreds of Tunisian men have also gone to join the ranks of the jihadists fighting to bring down the regime of President Bashar al-Assad.

However, Ben Jeddou also said that since he assumed office in March, "six thousand of our young people have been prevented from going there" to Syria.

He has said in the past that border controls have been boosted to intercept young Tunisians seeking to travel to Syria.

Media reports say thousands of Tunisians have, over the past 15 years, joined jihadists across the world in Afghanistan Iraq and Syria, mainly travelling via Turkey or Libya.

Abu Iyadh, who leads the country's main Salafist movement Ansar al-Sharia, is the suspected organiser of a deadly attack last year on the US embassy in Tunis and an Afghanistan veteran.

He was joint leader of a group responsible for the September 9, 2001 assassination in Afghanistan of anti-Taliban Northern Alliance leader Ahmad Shah Massoud by suicide bombers.

Muslim hardliners known as Salafists have attacked a hotel in the Tunisian town of Sidi Bouzid because its bar served alcohol, reports BBC News.

Dozens of activists smashed bottles and chased away customers at the Horchani hotel.

The sale and drinking of alcohol is legal in Tunisia, which is popular with foreign tourists.

The country has witnessed a resurgence of Islamist hardliners recently since the overthrow of President Ben Ali.  The central Sidi Bouzid is the cradle of Tunisia's revolution, which ended secular rule and triggered the Arab Spring.

Hotel owner Jamil Horchani told Reuters the Salafists "attacked the hotel on Monday night and smashed all its contents. They entered the rooms and damaged furniture and smashed bottles of alcohol."

They had previously threatened to attack the hotel if he did not stop serving alcoholic drinks, he said.

In May, Salafists in Sidi Bouzid staged an anti-alcohol protest demanding that hotels and bars be relocated outside the town, some 300km (186 miles) west of the capital Tunis.   (BBC News)

Radicals on social media networks called on the government to strip Habiba Ghribi, the first Tunisian woman to win an Olympic medal, of her nationality because her running gear was too revealing. She won the silver in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. reports Fox News.

And a Facebook campaign by extremist group Ansar al Chariaa is targeting swimmer Oussama Mellouli for drinking juice before racing during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Mellouli won gold in the 10-kilometer marathon and bronze in the 1,500-meter freestyle.

Tunisia's leaders on Wednesday condemned extremists after days of riots by radical Islamists left one man dead, injured 62 security personnel and led to more than 160 arrests.

Ultraconservative Islamists known as Salafis attacked an art gallery Sunday in a Tunis suburb for an exhibition they said insulted Islam. After security forces dispersed them with tear gas, gangs attacked police stations around the country over the next few days.

Clashes between secular groups and religious hardliners have been on the rise in recent months, but this week's violence is unprecedented and comes just two days after the terror group al-Qaida urged Tunisians to rise up against the governing moderate Islamist party Ennahda.

According to state media, four artworks were defaced on Sunday at the controversial exhibition, which opened this month and featured work that highlighted sensitive issues, including Islamist influence in Tunisia and the role of women in society.

Those arrested will be charged under the 2003 anti-terror law, ministry official Mohamed Fadhel Saihi told reporters.

Salafists denied involvement in the rampage that injured 65 policemen and called for a protest after this week's Friday prayers.

Liberal and conservative attitudes have jostled for cultural and political dominance, with one television station fined heavily last month for screening the film Persepolis, which was found to be blasphemous because it depicts God.      (The National)

"Anonymous" attacks Tunisian Islamists

Anonymous Tunisia released a video detailing the group's attacks on the Islamist  Ennahda.

Anonymous:  "We are not against religion, for we are Muslims, but we stand for freedom in our country."

Hackers calling themselves "Anonymous Tunisia" recently broke into the personal email of Prime Minister Hamadi Jebali, releasing thousands of messages allegedly belonging to the head of government.

The April 8th attack, dubbed "Operation Tunisia Back" by the hackers, was announced on social media sites and YouTube. The group leaked 2,725 emails belonging to the head of government and other prominent Ennahda members. The breach came just a month after a series of piracy acts targeting Islamist websites in Tunisia reports Magharebia News.

The leaked documents included an email from Jebali to the Turkish Embassy containing an attachment with the biography of Foreign Minister Rafik Abdessalem and a message from a member of Ennahda to Jebali saying Tunisians could vote twice in elections, once abroad and once in Tunisia. Other messages included financial transactions, bank accounts and correspondence with some foreign ambassadors.

"We decided to publish classified documents of the Ennahda Movement, including personal email addresses, telephone numbers and bank transactions, in addition to financial receipts from during the movement's election campaign," Anonymous said in an April 8th audio message posted online.

Ameur Arayadh, chairman of the party's political bureau, denounced the piracy operation against Islamists, saying that the practices were immoral and contrary to all laws and values.

"In any case, Prime Minister Hamadi Jebali is a public figure and has nothing to hide," he added.

Last month, the Tunisian branch of Anonymous launched an attack against several Islamic websites, including the Ennahda Party page and the website of Hizb ut-Tahrir, which calls for the establishment of an Islamic caliphate.

"We are not against religion, for we are Muslims, but we stand for freedom in our country," the hackers said in a message posted on social networking sites.

Anonymous is one of the largest groups of internet activists and hackers, consisting of members from across the globe who co-ordinate their activities through social networking sites. The group has no leader or hierarchy but operates under a common set of principles and logo.

Tunisia's Islamist party pulls back from Sharia Law

Officials from the largest party in Tunisia's governing coalition have said they will not support moves to enshrine Islamic law in the new constitution.

Senior members of the moderate Islamist Ennahda Party said the wording of the old constitution, which proclaims Islam as the state religion, would remain reports BBC News.

A group of ultra-conservative Muslims known as Salafis had demanded the introduction of Sharia.  Ennahda has been under growing pressure to declare its position on the issue.

The BBC's Jon Leyne says that the news will disappoint the increasingly vocal conservative minority, but it will bring relief to liberals and secularists who fear a tide of Islamism sweeping across the region.

"Ennahda has decided to retain the first clause of the previous constitution without change," senior Ennahda official Ameur Larayed told local media.
