On Thursday, the trial of Finnish lawmaker Päivi Räsänen began for allegedly violating the country's "hate speech" laws when she publicly questioned her church's leadership on X for sponsoring a 2019 Pride event and included a picture of a Bible verse.
According to her law team at ADF International, after Räsänen posted the tweet that asked, "How does the doctrine of the church, #raamattu fit in with the fact that shame and sin are raised as a matter of pride?" she was subjected to over 13 hours of police interrogations over the course of several months.
Because of her religious beliefs on marriage and sexuality, Finland's former Prosecutor General brought three criminal hate speech charges against Räsänen. One for the Tweet in question, another for a 2019 radio interview she took part in on the topic, and one for a pamphlet about sexuality and marriage called "As Man and Woman He Created Them," she wrote for the church in 2004.
Lutheran Church Bishop Juhana Pohjola is facing charges alongside Räsänen for publishing the pamphlet at the time. Both were previously unanimously acquitted in 2022 by a Finnish District Court, but prosecutors appealed the decision.
“Everyone should be able to share their beliefs without fearing censorship by state authorities," Räsänen said outside the courtroom. "I know that the prosecution is trying to make an example of me to scare others into silence. Yet, you do not have to align with my views to agree that everyone should be able to speak freely. With God’s help, I will remain steadfast and continue defending everyone’s human right to free speech.”

(Newswars) - The parents of a 15-year-old Finnish girl lost custody of their daughter after refusing to allow her to undergo a sex change.
According to a report by Svenska Yle, the parents prevented the girl from starting hormone treatments to “correct her gender.”
The names of the individuals involved were changed and the EU country in which the events happened were removed from the article to protect the identity of the family.
However, what we do know is that two summers ago after the family moved abroad, their daughter Nea met a new friend group.
She went from acting and dressing very feminine to dressing like a boy and claiming she was born into the wrong body.
Nea then demanded that her parents Kari and Niina allow her to begin hormone therapy and eventually breast removal surgery.
The request was denied and Nea became increasingly angry before one of her friends contacted the police and filed a criminal report against the parents.
Documents show that Nea’s friends were encouraging her to “break contact with her parents” from the beginning.
Nea was taken by authorities and spent a few months in an orphanage before being allowed to return home to her parents, who then planned to move back to Finland.
Nea later returned to the police station with a local transgender activist and a decision to allow her to begin hormone treatment was made without the parents even being consulted.
Nea’s parents eventually gave up on trying to regain full custody of her and now say that she hardly speaks to them.
Her parents watched a video of the girl talking into a camera and saying, “This is how I sound six months after I started taking testosterone.”
She has apparently developed a deeper voice, put on weight and grown more hair, changes that are “irreversible.”
“Without over-dramatizing, you can say that as the voice, appearance and personality change, it is as if they had killed our child,” said the girl’s mother.
As we previously highlighted, the number of children wanting to undergo sex change treatment has exploded since the media and the culture began hyping transgender identity politics.
Earlier this year, it was revealed that five people working at Britain’s only NHS transgender clinic had quit after children as young as three were being through unnecessary gender reassignment treatment.
“Referrals to the clinic risen in recent years, with 94 in 2010, rising to 2,519 by last year, with the youngest patient aged just three,” reported the Daily Mail.

An apartment alone does not solve anything. Other vital aspects should also be considered.”

Each day immigration officials are forced to deal with queues of thousands of people desperate to secure their status in the country.
And to tackle it the Home Office has confirmed illegal immigrants are now being offered £2,000 each to leave as well as a flight home paid for by British taxpayers.
The Government confirmed they have made "assisted return" payments to a total of 529 people since they developed the strategy which was implemented in January of this year.
They say the money is offered on a case-by-case basis, up to a maximum value of £2,000 per person.
The assistance, the Government says, is to help those returning to "find somewhere to live, find a job or start a business in their home country".

(London Daily Mail) - Iraqi refugees who left Finland voluntarily due to chilly weather conditions have been pictured kissing the ground in joyous scenes upon their return to Baghdad.
Thousands of the migrants who left Finland arrived back in the Iraqi capital today and were pictured greeting loved ones and celebrating their return home.
They had originally fled to Finland only to become disappointed with life in the frosty Scandinavian country.
Photographs taken of their arrival in Baghdad showed some crying with relief at being reunited with loved ones, while others kissed the floor of the airport after touching down.
Europe is in the grip of its worst migrant crisis since the Second World War, with more than a million people arriving last year having fled wars and poverty in the Middle East and Africa.
Although Germany and Sweden have taken in many of the migrants, Finland too saw its number of asylum seekers increase nearly tenfold in 2015 to 32,500 from 3,600 in 2014.
Almost two thirds of these were young Iraqi men, but some changed their mind and returned after Finland chartered flights to Baghdad.
Officials said about 4,100 asylum seekers had so far cancelled their applications and that number was likely to reach 5,000 in the coming months.
A majority of the home-bound migrants have told immigration services they want to return to their families, but some expressed disappointment with life in Finland.

On the northern fringes of Europe, Finland has little history of welcoming large numbers of refugees, unlike neighbouring Sweden. But as with other European countries, it is now struggling with a huge increase in asylum seekers and the authorities are wary of any anti-immigrant vigilantism.
A group of young men founded Soldiers of Odin, named after a Norse god, late last year in the northern town of Kemi. This lies near the border community of Tornio, which has become an entry point for migrants arriving from Sweden.
Since then the group has expanded to other towns, with members stating they want to serve as eyes and ears for the police who they say are struggling to fulfil their duties.
Members blame "Islamist intruders" for what they believe is an increase in crime and they have carried placards at demonstrations with slogans such as "Migrants not welcome".
While most Finns disapprove of the group, its growth signals disquiet in a country strained by the cost of receiving the asylum seekers while mired in a three-year-old recession that has forced state spending and welfare cuts.
Finnish police have also reported harassment of women by "men with a foreign background" at New Year celebrations in Helsinki, as well as at some public events last autumn.
This followed complaints of hundreds of sexual assaults on women in Cologne and other German cities - with investigations focused on illegal migrants and asylum seekers - and allegations that Swedish police covered up accusations of similar assaults by mostly migrant youths in Stockholm.
Police files show reported cases of sexual harassment in Finland almost doubled to 147 in the last four months of 2015 from 75 in the same period a year earlier. The figures give no ethnic breakdown of the alleged perpetrators.
Finland received about 32,000 asylum seekers last year, a leap from 3,600 in 2014. Yet it has a relatively small immigrant community, with only around 6 percent of the population foreign-born in 2014 compared with a European Union average of 10 percent.
In Kemi, the Soldiers of Odin patrol the streets daily despite the temperatures sinking to -30 Celsius (-22 Fahrenheit). The group has stated it operates in 23 towns, but police says the network operates in five. Its Facebook page has 7,600 "likes".
"In our opinion, Islamist intruders cause insecurity and increase crime," the group says on its website. One self-proclaimed member, aiming to recruit new members in the eastern town of Joensuu, said on Facebook the group is "a patriotic organisation that fights for a white Finland".
Crimes committed by "migrants" (illegal alien Muslims) are being hidden from the legal citizens of the nation.
(Infowars News) - Finnish cops have been ordered by the country’s national police board not to publicly identify migrants as criminal suspects over concerns that doing so would encourage a ‘racist’ backlash against the wave of asylum seekers entering Scandinavia.
The new guidance, reported on by Finnish news outletIltalehti.fl, is designed to prevent “negative” attitudes being attached to asylum seekers, as well as maintaining “law and order and a sense of security” by not radicalizing local populations who are opposed to migrants entering the country.
By keeping the migrant status of the suspect confidential, the police board hopes that crimes committed by asylum seekers will not “stir up anger.”
The order means that press releases or pleas for public help in identifying suspects will not include information identifying the suspect as a migrant, making it easier for would-be criminals and rapists to evade detection.
This is particularly egregious given the alarming number of rapes that haveoccurred in and around migrant camps, as well as Sweden’s cripplingrape epidemic, for which Muslim migrants are largely responsible.
As we have previously highlighted, authorities in Germany are also covering up crimes committed by migrants.
Last month it emergedthat police in Germany are keeping quiet about a spate of rapes targeting children committed by Muslim migrants in and around refugee camps so as not to “legitimize” critics of mass migration.
Germany’s top broadcaster ZDFis also refusingto run crime stories about Muslim rape suspects because, in the words of Editor in chief Ina-Maria Reize-Wildemann, “We don’t want to inflame the situation and spread the bad mood. [The migrants] don’t deserve it.”

That’s because Itella, the Finnish postal service, is releasing commemorative stamps featuring the art of Tom of Finland, or Touko Laaksonen (1920-1991). Laaksonen remains a towering and iconic figure in the gay art scene. His sketches, often explicit, were unapologetic depictions of gay sex and relationships.
Laaksonen’s subjects were almost always muscle-bound, handsome figures, often bursting out of their clothes. His work, a meditation on masculinity, was also heavy on leather fetish imagery. It’s a pretty risque sheet of stamps, which will feature 33 different designs based on Laaksonen’s work. They even include a little exposed booty, but nothing hardcore.
“Of course, the choice was discussed, but we wanted to live in the year 2014,” Itella development director Markku Penttinen told the Finnish newspaper Helsingin Sanomat.
Laaksonen’s art is part of a number of public collections, including the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Art Institute of Chicago.
“The sheet (of stamps) portrays a sensual life force and being proud of oneself,” said graphic designer Timo Berry, who selected the work that will be printed on stamps released this fall. “There is never too much of that in this northern country.”
After Russia's seizure of Crimea both Sweden and Finland are considering there defense options including joining NATO.
STOCKHOLM / HELSINKI (Reuters News) - When Russian warplanes staged a mock bombing run on Sweden last year, air defences were caught napping. It was the middle of the night and no Swedish planes were scrambled.
Instead, Danish jets belonging to NATO's Baltic mission based in Lithuania, took to the air to shadow the Russians.
The discussion that incident triggered over Sweden's ability to defend itself has grown with Russia's seizure of Crimea from Ukraine. As in neighbour and fellow EU member Finland, Swedes wonder whether to seek shelter in the U.S.-led NATO alliance, abandoning Stockholm's two centuries of formal neutrality.

Sweden has talked of a "doctrinal shift" in defence policy. In Helsinki, where "Finlandisation" became a Cold War byword for self-imposed neutrality driven by fear of a powerful neighbour, the government has talked of an "open debate" on joining NATO.
Talk of NATO underscores anxieties that feed calls for more defence cooperation and spending. But membership seems distant, with voters in both countries sceptical of the benefits, and wary of the costs of taking on new international commitments.
Both nations have a history of dealing with Moscow in their own particular ways. Sweden's loss of Finland to Russia in the time of Napoleon prompted it to give up on war and armed pacts.
Finland, which won independence during Russia's revolution of 1917 but nearly lost it fighting the Soviet Union in World War Two, kept close to the West economically and politically during the Cold War but avoided confrontation with Moscow.
Like Sweden, it joined the European Union only in 1995.
For all the scepticism about NATO, however, worries have been growing in Scandinavia since Russia's action in Crimea.
Russian troops held exercises on the Finnish border this month. A former aide to Vladimir Putin made waves by saying that, after ex-Soviet Ukraine, the president might eye Finland next.
Both Nordic nations may bolster defence spending and forge a closer military partnership between themselves as they face Russia across the Baltic and along Finland's long land border.
So far neither has risked finding out what Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev meant when he said last year that Finnish or Swedish NATO membership would force Moscow to "respond".
Both Swedish and Finnish armed forces cooperate with the other three Nordic states which are in NATO - Denmark, Norway and Iceland - and both have cooperated with NATO in Afghanistan.
Swedish jets helped Libyan rebels in 2011 and in March joined a NATO exercise in Norway, near the Russian border.
Still, some politicians are already making noises they may one day have to go further.
"I think it would be good to have an open debate about NATO already now and I hope that everyone would participate in it, even those who oppose the membership," Finnish Prime Minister Jyrki Katainen told online newspaper Verkkouutiset last week.
