(Reuters) - Anti-vaccine protesters tried to storm the Bulgarian parliament on Wednesday and briefly scuffled with police officers during a massive rally against coronavirus restrictions in downtown Sofia.

Tensions rose an hour after about 3,000 people gathered in front of the parliament building, demanding the lifting of a mandatory health pass which they said trampled on their rights and was a back-door means of forcing people to get vaccinated.

Waving national flags and flags of the ultra-nationalist Revival party, which organised the rally, they chanted "Freedom" and "Mafia" and decried all measures against the virus.

"I do not approve of the green certificates. I do not approve that the children are being stopped from attending classes. I do not see the logic of these things," 39-year old engineer Asparuh Mitov told Reuters at the start of the rally.

(CNSNews.com) -- Although historians have documented and numerous governments have recognized the genocide committed by the Ottoman Turks against the Christian Armenians, which killed an estimated 1.5 million people between 1915 and 1923, an Egyptian cleric recently declared on Turkish television that the Armenian genocide is "a lie," and that Muslims have never committed mass atrocities against any group.

Egyptian cleric Sheikh Sharif Abadi said in an interview on the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood Watan TV channel that, “We [Muslims] have never perpetrated a racial massacre.  We have never laid siege on a certain group and kill, let's say, all the Jews.”

When the interviewer asked Abadi, “So why do people say that the Ottoman Caliphate perpetrated a massacre against the Armenians?” he said, “It is a lie. The Armenians are the ones who betrayed [the Ottomans].  There is a historical story behind it, but [the massacre] never happened.  It is a lie fabricated by the British in order to topple the Ottoman Caliphate.”

Abadi then asked, “Are you saying that we had refrained from perpetrating racial massacres for 14 centuries, just to carry one out in the final two years of the Caliphate?  Does this even make sense?  It's a lie.”

“There was no racial massacre of the Armenians,” he declared. “They are the ones who started it.  They are the ones who betrayed us.  They are the ones who killed Muslims and burned mosques.”

Sharif Abadi further claimed, “We have never perpetrated a racial massacre or killed women and children…. The third thing is that we have never forced anyone to convert to Islam.”

In its “Overview” article on the “Armenian Genocide of 1915,” the New York Times wrote,  “There were executions into mass graves, and death marches of men, women and children across the Syrian desert to concentration camps with many dying along the way of exhaustion, exposure and starvation.”

The New York Times went on to note that the massacre of the Armenians was well documented at the time, and that even though the Ottoman Empire’s “ally, Germany, was silent at the time, in later years documents have surfaced from ranking German diplomats and military officers expressing horror at what was going on.”

Henry Morgenthau Sr., a U.S. Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire from 1913 to 1916, wrote in his 1918 memoir Ambassador Morgenthau's Story, “When the Turkish authorities gave the orders for these deportations, they were merely giving the death warrant to a whole race; they understood this well, and, in their conversations with me, they made no particular attempt to conceal the fact…. I am confident that the whole history of the human race contains no such horrible episode as this.  The great massacres and persecutions of the past seem almost insignificant when compared to the sufferings of the Armenian race in 1915.”

President Theodore Roosevelt wrote in a letter to Cleveland Hoadley Dodge on May 11, 1918, that “the Armenian massacre was the greatest crime of the war, and the failure to act against Turkey is to condone it….”

• The Chinese Communists are on the march all over the world.  They are using state owned corporations and shell "private" businesses to take over farm land and mineral rights in local nations.
• Local citizens are no longer free in their own country.  They have effectively become dependent employees of the Chinese Communist Party.  
• The Communists in turn bribe local officials in the host country to maintain "law & order" and make sure labor unions are not allowed and the workers toil endlessly for the State.

(Farmland Grab.org)  -  In November 2014, a corn shipment from Bulgaria arrived at the Port of Shenzhen, China. The corn was grown on leased land in Bulgaria by a Chinese company that had invested close to $80 million in Bulgaria, to grow and process grains, and oils for export to China. 

The company set up a Bulgarian subsidiary in 2011, leased 28,700 hectare (ha) of land, and purchased processing plants and storage facilities in the country. The Chinese embassy in Bulgaria identified the country as a favorable target for Chinese agricultural investment in Europe, and the project was endorsed by Chinese dignitaries (Luo, 2014).

As China becomes a large importer, its food security strategy calls for gaining control over imports from their source. To achieve this, a growing number of Chinese companies are making investments abroad that resemble the Bulgarian project. U.S. leaders in agriculture, business, and government should be aware of this new development in agricultural markets.

Whole Supply Chain Control

China has a long history of investing in agriculture overseas with a mix of foreign aid and commercial objectives (Chen, Zhang, and Wang, 2009). As China’s imports rise, investment is growing rapidly as Chinese companies pursue profit-making opportunities with encouragement from the Chinese government (The Paulson Institute, 2013; Han, Jin, and Wu, 2014).  Chinese President Xi Jinping has advocated agricultural investment as a national food security and diplomatic strategy, and officials say outward foreign direct investment in agriculture (OFDI-A) is in its early stages (Xinhua News Service, 2014; Global Entrepreneur, 2014; Smaller, Wei, and Liu, 2012). 

China’s OFDI-A is diverse, ranging from small farms cultivating rice across the Russian border, to massive oil palm plantations and processing facilities in Indonesia. In August 2014, China’s Ministry of Commerce announced that over 300 Chinese companies were investing in agricultural, forestry, and fishing projects in 46 countries (Farmer's Daily, 2014). The Ministry of Agriculture reported that Chinese businesses and state-owned enterprises had cultivated over 230,000 ha of foreign land by the end of 2013.

Chinese OFDI-A is aimed at gaining greater control in the global marketplace. The strategy encompasses mergers and acquisitions of firms from developed economies, while also laying out a clustered investment strategy to access under-utilized agricultural resources with an emphasis on Africa (Ministry of Commerce, 2015; GRAIN, 2012).   The strategy has evolved from the traditional focus on land acquisitions to encompass investments in the entire supply chain, including processing, logistics, ports, and trading. The strategy is influenced by the widespread belief among Chinese government and industry leaders that multinational trading companies will gain large profits and influence prices by controlling the supply chain for Chinese imports of soybeans and other commodities (Dan, 2014; Irwin and Gallagher, 2014; Niu and Wong, 2014; Schneider and Sharma, 2014).

An example is the recent purchase by China’s State-owned agriculture and foodstuff giant, COFCO, for a majority share of Dutch grain trader Nidera for an estimated $1.6 million. The acquisition gives COFCO access to Nidera’s Brazilian assets and helps COFCO compete with multinational grain traders.  State-backed enterprises like COFCO, Chongqing Grain Group Co., Ltd, and Beidahuang have been the central actors in China’s procurement of a large portion of the agricultural marketplace (Hu, 2013), but private companies like WH Group and New Hope Group Co., Ltd. also play a major role.

LESOVO, Bulgaria — Less than two decades after the painstaking removal of a massive border fence designed to keep people in, Bulgarian authorities are just as painstakingly building a new fence along the rugged Turkish border, this time to keep people out.

Faced with a surge of refugees from the Middle East and North Africa — and the risk that they include jihadis intent on terrorist attacks — Europe is bolstering its defenses on many fronts, including this formerly Communist country, which little more than a quarter-century ago was more concerned with stanching the outbound flow of its own citizens to freedom. For the past 16 months, Bulgaria has been carrying out a plan that would sound familiar to anyone along the United States-Mexico frontier: more border officers, new surveillance equipment and the first 20-mile section of its border fence, which was finished in September.

The hardening of the Bulgaria-Turkey border is one very visible manifestation of the agitation across the continent about the economic, social and political ramifications of the surge in immigration. With warmer weather fast approaching and more refugees likely to be on the move, nations along Europe’s southern tier are beefing up border staffing, adding sensors and other technical barriers, expanding refugee facilities, and building walls.

More than 200,000 refugees are known to have penetrated Europe’s land and sea borders last year, not including those who were able to sneak through undetected.  And the numbers for the first two months of this year, when Europe enjoyed its second mild winter in a row, were up sharply compared with the same period last year.

Anti-immigrant sentiment is increasing in Britain, France, Hungary, the Czech Republic and elsewhere across the continent. Parties espousing ethnic nationalism are seeing their support rise, some to the point where they threaten the dominance of more traditional parties.

“The rise of the right wing in Europe is a reaction to this refugee flow,” said Boris B. Cheshirkov, chief spokesman in Bulgaria for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

“Right now, in the western part of Turkey, on the borders of Greece and Bulgaria, you probably have thousands of Syrian refugees waiting for an occasion to cross,” said Marc Pierini, an expert on Turkey and the Middle East at Carnegie Europe, a foreign policy analysis group. “If you talk about returning jihadists, you are talking about dozens.”

Slavcho Velkov, a Bulgarian security expert and university lecturer, said he believed there was more jihadist movement through Bulgaria than the authorities acknowledged.

“I have seen such fighters here with my own eyes,” he said. “I spotted some at the central bus station and struck up a conversation. When I asked them where they were going, they said, ‘We are going to heaven.’ ”

More than 170,000 refugees — most of them from the Middle East, Africa and Afghanistan — entered Europe on the sea route to southern Italy in 2014. In the first two months of this year, the number was up 42 percent over the same period last year.

Socialist parties defeated in Latvia and Bulgaria

Bulgaria's centre-right GERB emerged as the winner of national elections.

Two Wins For Conservatism

Coming soon to the U.S.?  Center-Right coalitions marched to victory in two different European elections.

Former Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov is returning to power after his center-right GERB party won most seats in parliamentary elections but fell short of a majority to govern alone.

With 99 percent of the votes counted from Sunday's election, the Conservative GERB party led with 32.7 percent and the Socialists came second with 15.4 percent, the Central Election Commission announced Monday.

GERB officials said Monday their party was ready to form a minority government and was seeking the support of other parties but not the Socialists reports ABC News.

 

Borisov said he was prepared to govern the country and left the door open for talks with possible coalition partners. He said the alternative was holding a new election that would cause political uncertainty and financial turmoil for the European Union's poorest nation.

 

Borisov, 55, headed a minority government between 2009, when his party took nearly 40 percent of the vote, until 2013, when he resigned amid sometimes violent protests against poverty, high utility bills and corruption.

 

The nation of 7.3 million is struggling with corruption and a widespread disillusionment with the governing elite. A weak economic recovery is now threatened by a Russian ban on European food imports and a major crisis in the country's fourth-largest bank.

 

Bulgaria belongs to NATO and the 28-nation European Union but many residents feel a strong kinship to Russia.

Latvian Prime Minister's right of center Coalition Wins Majority in Election

A party mainly backed by ethnic Russians won the largest number of votes in Latvia’s parliamentary elections this weekend, but is likely to be shut out of government after fears over a resurgent Kremlin dominated the campaign.

The Harmony party, led by the mayor of Riga, Nil Ushakov, won 23% of the votes in the elections, while the coalition of three current ruling parties had 56% between them.

After the Kremlin’s actions in Ukraine and increased rhetoric about protecting Russians abroad, there have been concerns among the Latvian elite that the country’s large Russian-speaking minority could be used to give Moscow a foothold in the small Baltic state reports the Guardian.

Harmony favours closer ties with Moscow, while maintaining Latvia’s Nato and EU membership, and Ushakov raised eyebrows in Riga with a visit to Moscow recently during which he proclaimed that the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, was “the best option that Latvia can hope for” in the current political climate.

The election result shows that Ushakov’s attempts to reach beyond his traditional ethnic Russian base and appeal to a broader electorate have failed.

The results will give Harmony 25 seats in Latvia’s 100-seat parliament, six fewer than they had before the elections, when they were also the largest single party in parliament. Other parties, however, were reluctant to enter a coalition with what is seen as the “Russian party”.

“Putting the current votes for the coalition in the preliminary results together, it has convincingly acquired a majority,” Latvia’s president, Andris Berzins, said on Sunday in a televised address.

The parties will now have a week in which to enter negotiations, with a similar configuration to the current parliament the most likely outcome.

A third of Latvia’s population is Russian-speaking, but about 280,000 are “non-citizens” of the country, holding special passports that bar them from voting. In order to become citizens, they have to take an exam on Latvian culture and history, a process which Russian rights groups say amounts to discrimination, but Latvian authorities say is necessary given the history of Soviet occupation and forced Russification policies of the past.

Christian Wars of Liberation in Europe

• For nearly 500 years Christians fought wars against Jihadist Muslim Turks to liberate the conquered peoples of the Balkans from Islamic oppression. 
• But a politically correct Europe refuses to celebrate this anniversary.  So here I am to do my little part.

2013 marks the 100th anniversary of the last of the wars to liberate Europe from the dictatorial and terrorist rule of militant Islam.

We have not seen any parades or fireworks in Europe marking the event.  After all, it is not politically correct these days to identify Islam for what it is.  But our ancestors had no problem marching to the front lines to do battle with evil and free the peoples of Europe from Islamic oppression.

The Balkan Wars were two conflicts that took place in the Balkan Peninsula in south-eastern Europe in 1912 and 1913.

By the early 20th century, Bulgaria, Greece, Montenegro and Serbia had achieved independence from the Muslim Ottoman Empire, but large elements of their ethnic populations remained under Ottoman rule. In 1912, these countries formed the Balkan League.

Four Balkan states defeated the Muslim Ottoman Empire in the first war; one of the four, Bulgaria, was defeated in the second war. The Ottoman Empire lost nearly all of its holdings in Europe.

Ottoman Empire lost almost all its European territories to the west of the River Maritsa, drawing present day Turkey's western border. Large influx of Turks started to flee into the Ottoman heartland as a result of the occupied lands by the allies. By 1914, the remaining core region of the Ottoman Empire had experienced a population increase of around 2.5 million because of the flood of immigration from Balkans.

precipitated events that would lead to the formation of the Balkan League.

Bulgaria looks to enforce their borders while American politicians fall all over

each other to import and legalize millions of illegal and legal immigrants.

Bulgaria has unveiled plans to deal with the growing numbers of mostly Muslim refugees from Syria that are approaching its borders from Turkey.

Ministers are said to have discussed new funding allocations to put up 30 kilometres of barrier fencing along the border with Elhovo, in an effort to prevent illegal entry via the border.

If approved, the fences will be built in the areas that are most susceptible to migrants, currently mostly Syrian, crossing into Bulgaria reports Euronews.

The Bulgarian deputy Interior Minister justified the proposal, saying that the fences would be put up in places where there are pre-existing transport systems on the Turkish side, so that cars and buses can reach the border.

“There is no visibility in the area and the Bulgarian border police can’t see the people crossing the border till the last minute,” he added.

Bulgarian ministers have said their aim is not to send refugees back to their home countries, but to better protect the border.

A recent report by national broadcaster BNT claims that dissatisfaction is growing among district mayors, who don’t want to accept refugees in their areas.

“Bulgaria aims to find a solution for Syrian refugees, which is a burdensome issue for the country, and prevent needless tension and worry among the citizens in the country,” said foreign minister Kristian Vigenin.

In September, the number of Syrian refugees in Bulgaria was put at 4,500. At the same time, the Bulgarian Interior Ministry made a statement saying that Bulgaria could not afford to fence up their border with Turkey.

The cabinet is due to continue to brainstorm the refugee issue on October 21.
