(Natural News)  The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is considering increasing its deployment of nuclear weapons, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said as he claimed that Russia and China have been threatening that they would not think twice about using their nuclear warheads when needs arise.

"I won't go into operational details about how many nuclear warheads should be operational and which should be stored, but we need to consult on these issues," he claimed while speaking at the NATO headquarters. He claimed that the alliance is considering taking out the weaponry from the storage into standby.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed that the deepening Western involvement in the Ukraine conflict could trigger an escalation and that they are serious about it. However, they "are not brandishing [nuclear weapons]," Putin told his audience at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum on June 7. He reiterated that Russia would only consider using nuclear weapons if its sovereignty or territorial integrity were under threat. "I do not believe that is the case now," Putin emphasized. He warned, however, that changes to the doctrine "are not ruled out."

“A nuclear explosion may occur with or without a few minutes warning,” reads the page, which was updated on Friday. “Fallout is most dangerous in the first few hours after the detonation when it is giving off the highest levels of radiation. It takes time for fallout to arrive back to ground level, often more than 15 minutes for areas outside of the immediate blast damage zones.

FEMA recommends the following steps to prevent ‘significant radiation exposure,’ which include “Try to maintain a distance of at least six feet between yourself and people who are not part of your household,” and “If possible, wear a mask if you’re sheltering with people who are not part of your household.”

What’s more, “If you are experiencing a medical emergency, call 9-1-1 and let the operator know if you have, or think you might have, Covid-19. If you can, put on a mask before help arrives.”

(ZeroHedge)  -  The Pentagon has made a not-so-comforting admission that its nuclear arsenal is subject to errors and 'mistakes' — namely the potential for land-based missiles carrying nukes to be fired by mistake.

The almost unheard of public acknowledgement of such a danger, which it should be noted (if not already obvious) could trigger global nuclear apocalypse, actually came as part of an argument for why the DoD nuclear weapons program needs much more funding and a 'restart':

The Trump administration, in a closely held memo to lawmakers this spring, justified developing the first new U.S. atomic weapon since the Cold War by citing vulnerabilities and risks in the current nuclear arsenal that are rarely or never acknowledged in public.

In an unclassified five-page white paper sent to Congress in May, the Pentagon and the Energy Department’s National Nuclear Security Administration, or NNSA, affirm a point they have long minimized: the dangers of land-based missiles ready to launch minutes after a warning of enemy attack.

Recall that in late May of this year it was revealed that the White House is actually mulling conducting the first US nuclear test since the end of the Cold War. The last was conducted 28 years ago.

Administration officials suggested it would send a strong "message" to Russia and China at a moment landmark Cold War era nuclear arms reduction treaties are unraveling, and at a moment the US hopes to revise New START to account for China's high tech arsenal.

"The document, which was obtained by CQ Roll Call and has not previously been disclosed, makes the fullest case yet for the $14 billion W93 submarine-launched atomic warhead program and its MK7 reentry vehicle, which would cost several hundred million more dollars," Roll Call reports.

Citing a "variety of risks" in the current nuclear arsenal and launch processes, officials described that "the W93 warhead must be funded, starting in fiscal 2021, because of what it described as perils and vulnerabilities in the Navy’s inventory of sub-launched weapons, as well as in the Air Force’s land-based missiles and bombers." Fear of a false or accidental fire stem from the US nuclear systems being originally designed to launch minutes after a perceived enemy nuclear attack.

Chickens to trigger nuclear landmines

(Daily Mail)  -  Britain considered using chickens to trigger nuclear land mines in a bizarre scheme to shore up its defences during the Cold War. 

Military chiefs planned to use the explosives to devastate Soviet forces if they forced the western Allies into retreat during an invasion of Europe. 

But designers feared the bombs would become too cold if they were buried underground during a winter war, meaning they would not explode. 

Their improbable solution was to place chickens inside the mine - nicknamed Blue Peacock - using their body heat to keep the nuclear weapon working.

The chickens would have enough food for eight days and would then starve, meaning they could function as a primitive timer.

 A 1957 document, not revealed to the public until 2004, said that 'chickens, with a heat output of the order of 1,000 BTU (British Thermal Units) per bird per day are a possibility.' 

The plan sought to hold up Soviet invaders if they breached the Iron Curtain and attacked West Germany.

Research by David Hawkings, published in the journal Discovery, unearthed details of the secret nuclear land mine plan.  

Britain planned to make 10 of the mines and position them with the British Army in West Germany to counter a feared Soviet attack. 

Tests on the 16,000-pound weapon were to be explained away by saying it was an 'atomic power unit for troops in the field', the research found.

However the mine was scrapped in 1958 after just two prototypes had been manufactured, and was never used. 

Military chiefs are said to have been reluctant to place nuclear weapons in allied countries, fearing the possible fallout.
