Hollywood has not been kind to the very late, but still very great Robert E Howard.
Howard's 1982 Conan the Barbarian is an obvious classic of classics. Partly because the great John Milius directed the film and Oliver Stone and Milius wrote the screenplay.
It was mostly all downhill from there. The 1985 Red Sonja is one of the worst movies ever made. All copies should be burned. Other movies and TV shows suffer to one degree or another.
The 2009 European made Soloman Kane reared its head above the crowd. It was actually watchable and well made. Watch it on Netflix.
After floundering for many years, Red Sonja is finally back in the theaters. I will withhold judgement. They say something is better than nothing. Maybe.
Personally, I wanted the beautiful, voluptuous Sydney Sweeney to play the part. Oh well. another of my dreams is crushed.
The trailer for the new Red Sonja movie starring Matilda Lutz has been released, and while the movie itself may still be entertaining, this trailer went out of its way to hide it, evoking the fates of both Solomon Kane, Dredd and the Conan the Barbarian remake.
In theory the Red Sonja movie is coming out this year . . . . in theory.
But this film has taken forever to produce, and I have bad feelings about it. Still, as the greatest fan ever of Robert E. Howard I will have to see it.
Hollywood is fucking clueless about how to do Howard's stories.
The first Conan movie was a classic, but it was all downhill from there . . . . except for 2009's Soloman Kane which was well done and true to Howard. Kane was written and directed by M. J. Bassett, the film stars James Purefoy in the title role.
There is hope. Red Sonja is also being directed by M.J. Bassett.

The beloved Red Sonja gets another shot at Hollywood through Millenium Media. The production house will be helming the reimagining of the comic book icon. Comic enthusiasts and movie lovers are in for a treat in the upcoming San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) as Red Sonja’s first movie teaser is set for release.
Millennium Media has confirmed that the teaser and a special panel discussion, celebrating the character's 50th anniversary, will be the event's highlights.
The panel discussion during SDCC will not only be a tribute to Red Sonja’s past, but will also present a glimpse into her future with new comics and novels as per ComicBook.
Luke Lieberman, the president of Red Sonja, LLC, and one of the producers of the upcoming film, will take the reins as the moderator of the engaging panel discussion. Joining him on the panel will be esteemed personalities from the Red Sonja franchise, including Jimmy Palmiotti, Amanda Conner, Amy Chu, and Dan Panosian.
"The Shadow of the Vulture" is a short story by American writer Robert E. Howard, first published in The Magic Carpet Magazine, January 1934. The story introduces the character of Red Sonya of Rogatino, who later became the inspiration for the popular character Red Sonja, archetype of the chainmail-bikini clad female warrior.
Unlike Howard's better-known fantasy work, "The Shadow of the Vulture" is historical fiction, set in the 16th century. It uses the career of Ottoman sultan Suleiman the Magnificent (also known as Sultan Suleiman I), the aftermath of the Battle of Mohács (1526) and the later Siege of Vienna of 1529 as a backdrop for imaginary characters and events.
