By Gary;
In the video at the bottom, Dave Cullen brought up his top 10 desert island movies.
The idea is a simple one. You have one hour to grab 10 DVDs before boarding a plane for the island.
The movies don't have to be classics. The main point is being able to watch them over and over . . . after all you are stuck on the friggin island.
#1) The Dark Knight
Heath Ledger . . . subject closed. This is the perfect superhero movie and had ranked #1 on my annual superhero movie list for years.
#2 The Maltese Falcon
The perfect cast: Bogie, Mary Astor, Peter Lorre and Sydney Greenstreet. Combine them with Dashiell Hammett's book.
#3) Kill Bill, Volume One
Quentin Tarantino is both insane and a genius. I can't even count the number of times I have seen it. It's the perfect island film.
#4) X-Men: Days of Future Past
Perhaps one of the top five SciFi movies of all time.
So many characters to balance. Time travel. Super over the top quality acting. The plot of terminator Sentinel robots (that pre-date the Arnold Schwarzenegger series) gives us a frightening view of where we are headed.#5) She wore a Yellow Ribbon
An excellent John Ford - John Wayne production.
#6) Goldfinger
I had to toss in a Bond DVD and Goldfinger is the best 007.
#7) Man of Steel
My dislike of all things Kevin Costner clouded my judgement of this movie. But with the wonders of DVDs I can now skip all the Costner parts.
Director Zack Snyder (300, Watchmen) does an outstanding update of the Superman myth. The back story of Clark growing to manhood and love story of Superman and Lois Lane are very well done. The special effects battle scenes with General Zod's forces are exceptional.#8) The Hunger Games
The Hunger Games is a dystopian nightmare coming true today before our eyes. A wealthy, corrupt, fascist, effeminate Elite force the peasants into poverty so they can live in luxury. Sounds like the nightly news.
The theme spoke to millions in our society. The trilogy of Hunger Games books has sold over 65,000,000 copies in the U.S. alone and has been translated into 51 languages.More important, the trilogy had sold 26 million copies before the movie was even released. The books had touched a nerve.
#9) The Last of the Mohicans
The greatest film ever made of early America. You feel like you are there.
French and Indian War. Homesteads in flames. Colonial powers surging through the wilds. Indians displaced, massacred, and massacring, employed as mercenaries. Virtue shows up here and there, but men are doing evil on all sides. It is hard to believe how many years of my life have been devoted to The Walking Dead.
I had never liked zombie films before, but when the Dead first appeared in 2010 I, like so many others, was totally blown away by the plots, sub-plots, acting and special effects.
I have said that if you watch the first season on DVD in one sitting without the commercials you have one of the 10 best Sci Fi movies ever made.
