German Chancellor Angela Merkel's ruling coalition was slaughtered in yet another state election. |
The crushing of "Conservatism" in Germany????
- But did Conservatism really lose?
Chancellor Angela Merkel’s party had its worst result in more than half a century in the northern German state of Schleswig-Holstein. The coalition of Christian Democrats and pro-business Free Democrats suffered defeat in a state election being closely watched as a measure of support for Merkel's coalition at the national level.
But the real question is did Conservatives really lose?
When so-called "Conservatives" adopt virtually 80% to 90% of the Socialist big spending and debt agenda are they any longer Conservative? or are they simply moderate, business friendly Socialists?
The state of Schleswig-Holstein. |
That is why in the U.S. the GOP controlled House quivers in fear to do any real spending cuts of any kind. The same applies to Conservatives in Europe.
So I would say that moderate Socialism lost the election to Socialism.
In the state election the Conservative Christian Democrats lost one-third of their seats resulting in the worst score for Merkel's party in the state in five decades.
Their coalition partner, the pro-business Free Democrats, slid from 14.9 per cent to 8.2 per cent losing over half of their seats.
For Merkel, the defeat of her local allies in Schleswig-Holstein state could be an omen of worse to come. Elections are due in North-Rhine Westphalia state - the country's most populous with 18 million inhabitants - where her party also risks losing power.
.
The Pirates offer little ideology and focus on promoting their flagship policies of near-total transparency and an unrestricted internet. The party has secured seats in two state legislatures since last year. Many analysts have described their surprising victories as a protest vote.
.
For Merkel, the loss of another region ruled by the parties in her coalition further undermines her influence in the federal upper house of parliament, the Bundesrat, where states are represented. That may make her more likely to accede to SPD calls for more measures to boost economic growth.

Special Note to
American Readers
This is what is called a Free Election with six political parties in this German state legislature. Free elections, something that readers in the United States are unaware exist.
You see, in a free election voters have the choice of voting for many viable political parties. If they don't like what they see they can form a new party of their own. In this case the Pirate Party was formed by disenchanted voters. The Pirates now hold six seats.
While back in the USA - In America you are given the choice of Democrat or Republican. And if you don't like it you can shove it. The monopoly of political power by these two giants has made them arrogant. Backed by hundreds of millions in corrupt special interest money, the GOP and Democrats know there is nothing the Hell you can do about it.
