The Hobbit - So Very, Very Tired
What the Hell is Peter Jackson thinking?
The Hobbit is supposed to be about the Hobbit. The journey of Bilbo Baggins. There and back again. Instead Jackson wastes tons on money and screen time of sub-plots, characters and battles that have nothing to do with the book or our hero Bilbo.
My son and I caught "The Desolation of Smaug” last night and my disappointment is profound with both the first and second films.
Negatives (their are a lot): Bilbo Baggins has been relegated to a side character in his own film; the character Beorn is badly shortchanged; the famous spider fight in the book almost does not exist in the film; the Mirkwood forest part of the film is far too short; unnecessary Orc fights are thrown in just for the sake of fighting; Gandalf is off on a side trip to nowhere but does manage to eat up screen time that is needed for the main story; way too much screen time is used to create yet another "major" character, Bard from Laketown; and the Dwarves are badly misused inside the Lonely Mountain.
Positives: These are few and mostly technical in nature. The special effects are of the highest quality and Smaug the dragon is a wonderful CGI creation. The dialogue between Smaug and Bilbo follows the book and is excellent. Laketown is properly brought to life. The addition of Evangeline Lilly as the warrior Elf Tauriel turned out well from an action, not romantic, point of view.
Over all Peter Jackson has failed to recreate the magic of the Lord of the Rings. Mostly it is his fault. He has so far largely refused to properly follow J.R.R. Tolkien's original story. Instead his goal was to create a new 3 part Rings series for maximum profit. What a shame.
Rating: A 5 out of 10.
I love a pointed eared woman Evangeline Lilly as the Elf character Tauriel was a good addition to the movie. |
Ignored Martin Freeman is largely ignored as Bilbo Baggins in his own movie. |
