Hollywood Plans Pro-Communist Version of Anti-Communist Animal Farm

George Orwell might have seen this coming.
  • The retard Moonbats of Hollywood strike again.  Millionaire Liberals living in Malibu and Beverly Hills mansions want to make a movie about the evils of capitalism and wealth building.  The sad thing is Liberals do not understand how fucking stupid they look.

(From Moonbattery.com)  -  In his most famous work 1984, Orwell describes a totalitarian society in which history is constantly rewritten to meet the momentary political needs of the ruling party, on the theory that those who control the present control the past, and those who control the past control the future.

Another well-known work warning of the perils of oligarchical collectivism is Animal Farm, in which a socialist revolution leaves everyone but those who end up in power worse off than before. Applying the principles of the former book to the latter, we have the next obscenity to be excreted by Hollywood:
Actor Andy Serkis is set to direct an upcoming movie adaptation of George Orwell’s classic novel Animal Farm. But there will be a slight deviation from the story’s original focus: rather than serve as a cautionary tale about Communist totalitarianism, this updated version will address Hollywood’s predictable, go-to embodiment of evil, the Darth Vader of our time: corporate greed.
That is, the anti-communist story will be twisted around to advance the ideological objectives of communists.

What would expect from the leftist oligarchs of Tinseltown?
Gibbers Serkis,
“First and foremost, we are not making a film about Communism and Stalinism because if Orwell was writing the story today, he would be talking about other relevant topics like globalization and corporate greed.”
Yeah right. A more likely possibility is that Orwell
might be taking up his pen against the abuses of government surveillance, the left’s alliance with the creeping totalitarianism of Islamic theocracy, and the oppression inherent in the left’s shrewd manipulation of political language, such as its relentless push for submission to speech codes and its intolerance of politically incorrect expression.
Typically of left-wing propaganda, the movie will be targeted toward an audience too innocent to laugh it off.
“We’re making a family film,” said Serkis. Of course, because progressives are nothing if not proselytizers for their political religion, and they know how critical it is to preach their gospel to the youth. Hence all the family-friendly, anti-corporate, animated environmentalist propaganda films in recent years like Wall-E, Happy Feet, and The Lorax. Serkis’ Animal Farm seems destined to be burdened by a similar sort of heavy-handed agitprop.
From here, the commies running Hollywood can press ahead with a version of Atlas Shrugs that extols socialism and attacks “corporate greed” and the long-overdue film version of The Gulag Archipelago praising the just and humane ways of the Soviet government. Then they might broaden their perspective with a biblical epic promoting homosexuality.

French telecom group to sue the NSA over hacking

Vive la France
  • The French are going to sue the NSA about spying on them.  I can't get too worked up.  Spying on foreigners, not Americans, is what the NSA was supposed to be doing in the first place.

The real question of the day, "Is the NSA spying worthless?"

The fact of the matter is the "intelligence" groups of America are next to worthless.  From 9/11 to the Boston Bombings to Benghazi to the new suicide bombings at the Russian city of Volgograd we have been caught with our pants down over and over.

The NSA etc claims successes against terrorism . . . but, and there is always a but . . . those successes are classified and we are not allowed to know about them.  The government wouldn't lie would they?

We spend most of our time spying on the American people and our allies rather that Muslim murderers.

France’s largest telecom group, Orange, has threatened to sue the NSA over hacking the underwater cable that it jointly owns with 15 other companies, French media reported in the wake of the latest Snowden revelation.

In response to the recent report published by Germany’s Der Spiegel, Orange said it was not aware of any intrusion or unlawful actions of this kind.

"We will take legal action in the next few days because we want to know more about the eventuality that Orange data may have been intercepted," an Orange spokeswoman said as cited by Reuters. She added that Orange had had no role whatsoever in the spying reports RT News.

Orange has reiterated that the privacy of correspondence and negotiations can be broken only by special court order, and that the conditions and reasons for such action should be clearly defined in French law, the statement said, according to L’Express.

"Piracy to intercept data is not possible directly through the system of Orange, and such intrusion has not been previously reported," the company said in a statement, as quoted by Le Figaro.
The company now plans to take action in civil court.

On Sunday, Der Spiegel revealed that US intelligence was spying on the SEA-ME-WE-4 cable system that connects Europe with North Africa and the Gulf states and continues through Pakistan and India to Malaysia and Thailand.

According to the report, the Office of Tailored Access Operations (TAO) “successfully collected network management information for the SEA-Me-We Undersea Cable Systems (SMW-4)” on February 13, 2013.

As a result, the NSA was able to “gain access to the consortium's management website and collected Layer 2 network information that shows the circuit mapping for significant portions of the network.”

The document, leaked by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, said that TAO hacked an internal website of the operator consortium and copied documents stored there pertaining to technical infrastructure.

“More operations are planned in the future to collect more information about this and other cable systems,” the leaked document said, according to Der Spiegel.

Safe from Terror?
Instead of spying on terrorists we hear about the NSA spying on the German Chancellor's cell phone or the emails of the President of Brazil and that nation's oil company.

Michael Savage takes over from Hannity January 2nd

Bye Bye Sean - Hello Doc
  • Already #1 in live Internet streaming, on January 2nd from Coast to Coast, independent Conservative Dr. Michael Savage is taking over many of Sean Hannity's major radio stations in 3 to 6 eastern drive time.
  • Instead of a GOP suck-up host, listeners will hear an independent brand of Conservatism.

(New York Daily News)  -  When Michael Savage is prepping for his daily talk radio show, which moves into the 3-6 p.m. afternoon slot Wednesday on WABC (770 AM), he doesn’t listen to talk radio.

More likely, he says, he’s listening to Blue Note’s 25-CD collection of great jazz recordings. That’s not completely random coincidence.

“Doing radio for me is a lot like playing jazz,” says Savage. “It’s all about reaching for the notes, even the ones I know I can’t reach. Like Charlie Parker.

“My regular listeners know that. They hear me reaching all the time, and if I can’t get there, it’s all right. That’s what radio is.”

It’s a strikingly philosophical approach to a business built on black-and-white declarations delivered with absolute confidence.  Savage knows that landscape and says it’s one reason he has a good chance to rise above the pack once New York talk radio plunges into its biggest shuffle in many years.

As of Wednesday, WABC’s long-time afternoon anchors — Rush Limbaugh at noon and Sean Hannity at 3 p.m. — move to WOR (710 AM).
.
WABC has not announced a host for Limbaugh’s spot. Savage is taking Hannity’s, and all eyes will be watching to see who’s on top when the dust starts to settle.

Savage thinks he offers a strong alternative to Hannity.

“I know what Sean does,” he says. “He works from Republican Party talking points. He says he doesn’t any more, but he does."

“I don’t. You can’t drone on about the Bill of Rights. It’s just not interesting radio. My show is also an Obamacare-free zone. Who wants to hear about that?”

It’s not that Savage never talks politics, or hot-button issues. Ask any listener who has heard him crank it up on immigration, border security or what he sees as the ever-growing tentacles of big government and the entitlement society it encourages.

“My views changed during the year I was a social worker in New York,” says the 71-year-old Savage, who was born in the Bronx, graduated from Jamaica High and Queens College and now lives in the San Francisco area.

“I was working for the Department of Welfare, and I began to realize people who were on welfare — my clients — were living better than I was. That opened my eyes and changed my political beliefs.”

Regular Savage listeners have heard him expound on this subject in dire tones, warning that the “50% of the country” that doesn’t want to work is suffocating the 50% that does.

Michael Savage Taking Over Hannity's Former Cumulus Radio Timeslot
Official Announcement - 9/25/13

"Biggest shake-up in talk radio history," on January 2nd conservative talk show host Savage
is taking over Sean Hannity's major radio stations around the nation. "The Savage Nation,"
will take over Sean Hannity's 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. eastern drive time slot.
See Dr. Michael Savage takes over Sean Hannity's radio spot

Savage says he doesn’t consider himself a prophet of doom. “Hope,” he says, “springs eternal.”

He does not, however, hold out much hope in this area: “I see no way big government, once it starts to spread, can be stopped.”

What he does see is a world where, mercifully, politics is not the only concern.

“On my show tonight,” he says, “I’ll talk for a while about a museum I visited, and some things I saw there. I won’t lead the show with it, but I’ll talk about it, because my listeners will be interested.”

A typical Savage show will weave through food, travel, music and his dog Teddy as he sorts out the events of the day.

What matters, he says, is that there’s a point to all of it and he will get back there. Just like that jazz saxman.

“When I was growing up in New York, I’d listen to Symphony Sid at 2 in the morning,” he says. “I’d listen to Mel Allen. Their voices were reassuring to me.

“In the same way, my listeners like having my voice in their lives. They know that if they keep listening, they will hear the songbook.”

The best and worst movies of 2013

Thor  -  The Best of the Best

By Gary;

My first love is movies.  Hollywood can take us out of our everyday lives and into worlds of great wonder or terror.

That is the reason "Thor: The Dark World" ranks as the best movie of 2013.

Thor had the most difficult job of any film this year.  But they successfully melded impossible Norse myths with our modern world and with Science Fiction.  The CGI effects are beautiful.  The actors Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman and Anthony Hopkins are in top form.

Special Note - Tom Hiddleston as Loki is fantastic.  One of the best actors out there.

My Best Movies of 2013

  1. Thor: The Dark World
  2. Iron Man 3
  3. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire
  4. R.I.P.D.
  5. Gravity
  6. Oz the Great and Powerful
  7. Star Trek Into Darkness
  8. Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters
  9. Oblivion
Tom Cruise's "Oblivion" was visually stunning and
much more entertaining than I expected.

So So Movies

Over the years I have seen far more of these films than I care to remember.

Elysium
Beautiful CGI effects of a future earth of extreme grinding poverty and death.  But I felt the plot did not come together at the end.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug
Three hours of my life gone.  I hate this bloated, spastic movie on so many levels.  The only thing that keeps this film in the so so category is the incredibly well done dragon.

Still, Peter Jackson should hang his head in shame.  This film is a very long giant smelly turd.

Major Disappointments

After Earth
The winner for the steaming pile of shit award.  Will Smith is horrible and his son is unwatchable.

Man of Steel
For the love of God, please someone take the editor's ax to every scene with Kevin Costner and then shred the film clips.  Amy Adams should never have been hired.  She can't act worth a crap.  Erica Durance who portrayed Lois Lane in "Smallville" is a far, far better actress and should have been hired for the role.

The Wolverine
Huge Jackman in Japan  -  both confusing and boring.

World War Z
Wow.  About $200 million was spent to make a really crappy zombie movie.  AMC's "The Walking Dead" spent about $1.5 million for a one hour episode that was far more entertaining than this Brad Pitt turkey.

The Lone Ranger
Burn all copies.  Nuff said.

The Best Movie of 2013
Thor: The Dark World Official Trailer HD

Oz the Great and Powerful
One of the best films of the year.  It is impossible to get the 1939 classic out of our minds.  But this James Franco prequel is a wonder to watch.  Plus in this film you get both wicked witches for one ticket price.

Ghostbusters meets Beetlejuice
The movie did not do well at the box office but
so what!  For pure escapism R.I.P.D. was lots of fun.

Man of Yawn
Too God Damn Fucking Long!  With too much screen time devoted to a worthless
Kevin Costner and the Kent family sub-plot.  Jor-El on Krypton was a bore.

Democrats represent the richest areas in America

San Francisco, one of the richest areas in the U.S. votes Democrat.

The Rich Want More Taxes
Both the rich and the poor want a
Marxist re-distribution of wealth.

Income for most of the 366 metropolitan areas measured by the U.S. Census Bureau are flat in the past year, and many are still down significantly compared with 2008.

An interest political angle comes out of the report.  Sure most of very poor areas of America vote for Democratic leftists in order to get free crap from the government.  Free stuff that is paid for by money taken by the force of government from other people.

But contrary to the image presented by the State Media Complex and Democrats, nine of the ten most wealthy areas in the United States are represented by leftist Democrat Congressmen.  It appears it is the Democrats that are the party of the rich and powerful.

The Insanity of Liberalism

The insanity of Liberalism is impossible to explain to those of us who are rational and sane.  But it appears the more money you make you become crazier than bat shit and you vote for Marxists to re-distribute your own income away to others.

Here are the top ten Census Areas based on median family income.

1. San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, Calif. - - - - - - All Democrat Congressmen

Honolulu, Hawaii
Coming in at #8 in household income, Hawaii is a one-party leftist state.  For example,
there is just a single Republican in the State Senate.

Millionaires and Billionaires for Marxism
A role reversal.  Today the more money you make the more you
believe in the Marxist re-distribution of wealth.

Obama pushes Arab monarchies into China's arms

China Moves Into The Middle East
As Obama vacations in Hawaii the Chinese
are meeting with the Arabs.

Riyadh (AFP News)  -  The six energy-rich Arab monarchies of the Gulf are seeking to strengthen ties with China, Gulf Cooperation Council chief Abdullatif al-Zayani said Wednesday after talks with the Chinese foreign minister.

Zayani held talks in Saudi Arabia with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and expressed "GCC interest in bolstering friendship and cooperation ties with China," a GCC statement said.

Wang was quoted as saying that Beijing wants to "expand economic, trade and investment relations" with GCC countries and spoke of the "strategic cooperation and relations (it has) with the GCC".

Wang arrived in Saudi Arabia as part of a regional tour during which he also visit Israel, the Palestinian territories, Morocco and Algeria.

Saudi media said he will be discussing with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saudi al-Faisal a "strategic partnership" between Beijing and Riyadh. It did not elaborate.

Gulf monarchies are wary of Washington's reluctance to provide military support to Syrian rebels and for its openness towards their regional archfoe Iran, and are looking to improve ties with other nations.

The Sunni-ruled monarchies, like Western powers, fear that Iran may develop nuclear weapons under the cover of its disputed nuclear programme, which Iran insists is for peaceful purposes only.

Next came the revelation earlier this year that Obama was secretly negotiating with Iran, the mortal enemy of both Israel and Saudi Arabia. Officials in both nations have told me that they simply don’t believe that the president can sweet-talk the mullahs out of the weapons they have coveted for years reports Fox News.

“The bond of trust between America and Saudi Arabia has been broken in the Obama years,” Ahmed al-Ibrahim, an adviser to some of Saudi Arabia’s royals said. “We feel we have been stabbed in the back by Obama.”

“Every time that Obama had to choose between his enemies and his friends, he always chose his enemies,” he said. “We don’t know what he’s putting in his tea.”

Jonathan Dayton - Founding Father

Jonathan Dayton
Founding Father of the United States
Captain, Continental Army
New Jersey delegate, Continental Congress
Delegate, Constitutional Convention
Speaker, New Jersey General Assembly
Speaker, U.S. House of Representatives
U.S. Senator from New Jersey
Federalist Party

(Editor's Note - For a change of pace this winter we will do profiles of some of the Federalists who helped create this great nation. They gave us Liberty. But would they even recognize the centralized, authoritarian and socialistic Big Brother nation that calls itself the United States?)

Founding Father Jonathan Dayton (October 16, 1760 – October 9, 1824) was from New Jersey. He was the youngest person to sign the United States Constitution.

He served as the fourth Speaker of the United States House of Representatives representing the Federalist Party, and later served as a U.S. Senator.

Dayton was born in Elizabethtown (now known as Elizabeth) in New Jersey. He was the son of Elias Dayton, a merchant who was prominent in local politics and had served as a militia officer in the French and Indian War.

He graduated from the local academy, run by Tapping Reeve and Francis Barber, where he was classmates with Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr.

He then attended the College of New Jersey (now known as Princeton University). He left the College of New Jersey in 1775 to fight in the revolution, though he would later receive an honorary degree in 1776.

3rd New Jersey Regiment
Founding Father Jonathan Dayton dropped out of school and enlisted
in the 3rd New Jersey Regiment at the age of 15.
Above are re-enactors of that regiment.
See more at Jersey Blues.org

Soldier in the Revolution

Dayton was only 15 years old at the outbreak of the Revolutionary War in 1775.  He served under his father (Elias ) in the 3rd New Jersey Regiment as an ensign. On Jan. 1, 1777 he was commissioned a lieutenant and served as paymaster.

He saw service under Washington fighting, at both the battles of Brandywine Creek and Germantown.  Dayton remained with Washington at Valley Forge, and helped push the British from their position in New Jersey into the safety of New York City at the Battle of Monmouth.

In October 1780, Dayton along with an uncle were captured by loyalists who held him captive for the winter.  They were released in the coming year. They again served under Dayton's father Elias in the New Jersey Brigade.

Now only 19, Dayton was promoted to rank of captain on March 30, 1780 and transferred to the 2nd New Jersey Regiment.  With that unit he took part in the ensuing Yorktown Campaign and fought at the Battle of Yorktown.

The Revolutionary War Pension files also state that he served as Aid-de-Camp to General Sullivan on his expedition against the Indians from May 1 to Nov 30, 1779.

2nd New Jersey Regiment where he took part in the Battle of Yorktown.

A Founding Father and Politician

After the war, Dayton studied law and established a practice, dividing his time between land speculation, law, and politics.

He served as a New Jersey delegate to the Continental Congress.  Then in 1787 at the age of 26 he became the youngest member of Constitutional Convention.

Dayton went on to become a prominent Federalist legislator.  He was a member of the New Jersey General Assembly from 1786–1787, and again in 1790, and served in the New Jersey Legislative Council (now the New Jersey Senate) in 1789.

Dayton was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1789, but he did not take his seat until he was elected again in 1791.

During his last two terms he was Speaker of the House. He was the elected to the US Senate and served from 1799 to 1805.

Like most Federalists, he supported the fiscal policies of Alexander Hamilton, and helped organize the suppression of the Whiskey Rebellion. He supported the Louisiana Purchase and opposed the repeal of the Judiciary Act of 1801.

He became wealthy from his heavy investments in Ohio where the city of Dayton would later be named after him.

Dayton Arrested for Treason

One of the most interesting and under reported chapters of our history is the phony political "show trial" of Aaron Burr conducted in a Stalinist manner by a vindictive and paranoid Thomas Jefferson.

Vice President Aaron Burr
Both Burr and Dayton were arrested by
the military on Jefferson's personal order.

From day one of Jefferson's presidency he conducted endless attacks against anyone who might challenge his power starting with his own Republican Vice President, Aaron Burr.

In an effort to intimidate the Federal Courts, in a party line vote Jefferson's Republicans in Congress voted to impeach Supreme Court Justice Samuel Chase who had been appointed by George Washington himself.

Burr as Vice President conducted a fair impeachment trial rather than a witch hunt.  Chase was acquitted by the Senate thus infuriating Jefferson.

An rather loony Jefferson worked with James Madison to personally destroy Burr.  He had been thrown out as Jefferson's Vice President and was crushed in his race for governor of New York by Jefferson's hand picked candidate.

Doing a fast forward, Jonathan Dayton lent money to Vice President Aaron Burr thus becoming involved by association in the so-called Burr "conspiracy".

The Stalinist attacks on Burr started.  In 1805 the Federal District Attorney for Kentucky, brought charges against Burr, claiming that he intended to make war with Mexico. With the help of his young attorney, Henry Clay, Burr was able to have the entire case dismissed.

Joseph Stalin had nothing on Thomas Jefferson.  Vice President Aaron Burr was arrested by the military, not civilian authorities.

The Burr arrest was based on a "warrant" personally signed by Thomas Jefferson, not a warrant issued by any court.  He was charged with the trumped up accounts of treason and trying to overthrow the government.  The charges were punishable by the death penalty.

Having charges dismissed in Kentucky, Jefferson had the military take Burr to Jefferson's home sate of Virginia for a quick trial and conviction by a "friendly" jury.

The Burr trial was a national sensation.  All the old Federalist charges that Jefferson was a French radical authoritarian were back in the news.  An American President was personally seeking the death penalty against his own Vice President.
Jonathan Dayton

Both Federalists and Republicans were coming to Burr's defense.  Joining Burr's defense team were George Washington's first and third Attorneys General Edmund Randolph and Charles Lee.  Former Republican Senator Andrew Jackson attended the trial and threatened to fight any man who insulted Burr.
.
To make sure of a conviction Jefferson gave Prosecutor George Hay a stack of pre-signed, blank Presidential Pardons.  Anyone who would testify against Burr would get a pardon . . . those who refused to testify would be open to Federal prosecution by Jefferson.  One key witness against Burr was even "reimbursed" with a $10,000 check from the Jefferson Administration for "services rendered."
.
In the middle of the trial Dayton was arrested for treason on Jefferson's orders.

In his paranoid madness Jefferson was going all out by arresting for treason (a death penalty offense) a Founding Father and former Federalist Speaker of the House.

Burr ended up being acquitted of all charges.  Only at that point were all treason charges against Dayton dismissed.

Late life and family

He married Susan Williamson and had two daughters. Susan's Revolutionary War Pension Application W.6994 states that the marriage occurred on the twenty-eighth day of March, in the year 1779.

A supporting letter, written by Aaron Ogden, a Captain in the New Jersey Brigade, states that he "was present at the marriage of the said Jonathan Dayton and Susan his wife ; which marriage ceremony was performed by the Reverent Mr. Hoyt, a Presbyterian Clergyman... in the fore part of spring of the year seventeen hundred and seventy nine (1779) while the New Jersey Brigade lay at Elizabethtown in the Borough of Elizabeth and state of new Jersey."

After the Burr trial he resumed his political career and was elected to the New Jersey Assembly 1814-1815.

Dayton died Oct. 9, 1824 in his New Jersey hometown and was interred in an unmarked grave now under the present St. John's Episcopal Church in Elizabeth which replaced the original church in 1860.

Shortly before his death, the Marquis de Lafayette visited him, as reported in an obituary: In New-Jersey, Hon. JONATHAN DAYTON, formerly Speaker of the House of Representatives of Congress, and a Hero of the Revolution. When the Nation's Guest lately passed New-Jersey, he passed the night with General Dayton, and such were the exertions of this aged and distinguished federalist, to honor the Guest, and gratify the wishes of his fellow citizens to see, that he sunk under them ; and expired, without regret, a few days after (Columbian Centinel (Boston, MA), Oct 20, 1824, p. 2).

The Federalist Party was the first American political party. In Presidential politics the Federalists operated from the early 1790s to 1816, the era of the First Party System. Remnants of the Party lasted until 1830. The Federalists totally controlled the Federal government until 1801.

The party was formed by Alexander Hamilton, who, during George Washington's first term, built a network of supporters, largely urban bankers and businessmen, to support his Conservative fiscal policies. These supporters grew into the Federalist Party committed to a fiscally sound and nationalistic government. The United States' only Federalist President was John Adams; although George Washington was broadly sympathetic to the Federalist program, he remained an independent his entire presidency.

Google drops Wilders’ anti-Islam Gmail
Only politically correct, pro-Islam speech is allowed.

Google has deactivated the islamsticker@gmail Gmail account politician Geert Wilders was using to spread his anti-Islam stickers. The deactivation was probably prompted by the many complaints Wilders’ umpteenth anti-Islam initiative had prompted.

It was the politician himself who reported via Twitter on Boxing Day that his account had been closed. “Unbelievable; Google just blocked the account. It seems Mohammed Rabbae’s complaint was successful,” he tweeted. Rabbae had complained at Google that Wilders was abusing its service reports the NL Times.

His complaint –on behalf of the National Council of Moroccans- had been among many complaints that were lodged against Wilders after he came out with his anti-Island sticker a week ago; it read “Islam is a lie. Mohamed is a criminal. The Koran is poison.”

The politician claimed the sticker was not meant as an action against Muslims as the majority of people of this faith is not violent. He has since launched a new account where people may order his sticker.

Stock up: Final phase-out of traditional light bulbs begins in January

The End of the Edison Light Bulb
The Liberal Fucktards that designed the Obamacare
website have forced highly toxic Mercury laced
light bulbs into American homes.

Thanks to an overreaching federal government, the American public will soon be forced to purchase a product that’s severely overpriced, hazardous to our health and doesn’t live up to all its hype — and I’m not talking about Obamacare.

We now have only a few shopping days left to stock up on a product Americans have relied on for their general household lighting needs almost since its perfection by Thomas Edison 134 years ago — the incandescent bulb. On Jan. 1, it will go the way of the dodo bird.

You must obey your Green Masters.
On Jan. 1, 2012, the manufacture and importation of 100-watt incandescent bulbs were discontinued. A year later, the 75-watt version was put out to pasture, too. 2014 will mark the bulb’s final phase-out — no more 40- or 60-watt bulbs. In their place, we’ll be forced to use either the squiggly-looking compact fluorescent light bulbs or LED lights, according to The Wichita Eagle.

I actually gave the fluorescent bulbs a try a few years ago. I needed a 75-watt bulb and picked out a very expensive GE “Energy Smart” 75, with disappointing results. That’s when I read the fine print.

It wasn’t really a 75-watt bulb — it was a 20-watt bulb with what GE claimed was the light intensity of a traditional 75-watt bulb. Balderdash! It had 25 watts, maybe — not 75.

Not only did the light lack intensity, it’s quality was lousy. Instead of the warm, full-spectrum glow we’ve all become accustomed to, it cast those in its weak glow in a ghastly pallor straight from “Night of the Living Dead.”

That’s when I read the really fine print. If you break one — and who among us hasn’t broken a light bulb — you’re cautioned to retreat from the premises immediately and do everything short of calling in the hazmat team. That’s because they’re packed with mercury.

Even worse, it now appears that the bulbs are hazardous to our health, even if they’re not broken.
.
Germany’s ALAB Laboratory, based in Berlin, discovered two years ago that the bulbs emit carcinogens when turned on, especially for extended periods of time, according to The Telegraph.

“For such carcinogenic substances, it is important they are kept as far away as possible from the human environment,” Peter Braun, who carried out the tests, told the British newspaper. “I, therefore, use them only very economically. They should not be used in unventilated areas and definitely not in the proximity of the head.”

In other words, don’t use them to settle down with a good book. That last chapter may kill you.

Incidentally, the package of that overpriced 20-watt GE “Energy Smart” bulb claimed it “lasts 5 years.” Apparently, that’s only true if you never actually turn it on. Within five months, I was giving it last rites.

That’s when I gave LEDs a try. I bought an inexpensive desk lamp with about 30 tiny light-emitting diodes to illuminate my computer keyboard. Within a few weeks, it turned into a cross between an emergency strobe light and a ‘70s disco ball, with each of the diodes flashing on and off in no particular order. It drove me and my eyes nuts.

When I returned the lamp to the store, I was told my complaint was pretty common.

So Jan. 1 is it, folks. There are some exceptions to the ban, according to The Wichita Eagle, including three-way bulbs, appliance bulbs, grow lights, black lights, yellow bug lights and infrared lamps.

With that, I wish everyone a Merry Christmas, and may your days be merry and, most of all, bright.
